Jimmy Swaggart in critical condition after cardiac arrest

Louisiana televangelist Jimmy Swaggart remained in critical condition Tuesday, two days after he suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed at his home. Swaggart, 90, was found at his Baton Rouge residence around 8 a.m. Sunday, with first responders immediately administering CPR and taking him to a hospital, his family said on Facebook. 'He never regained consciousness,' Swaggart's son, Donnie, said Sunday night. 'Right now, he is in the ICU, and without a miracle, his time will be short. But we believe God — we're not giving up.' Swaggart fell on Saturday but showed no other signs of physical ailments, family representative Megan Kelly told TMZ. Swaggart's condition did not substantially change on Monday or Tuesday, according to family statements. 'We continue to trust the Lord and give Him time to work, knowing that His ways are perfect,' read a message shared Tuesday morning on the pastor's Facebook page. Swaggart rose to nationwide prominence with televised sermons in the 1980s. He was well known for his fundamentalist message, and he preached about the dangers of dancing, watching movies and feminism, among other supposed evils of 20th century life. But in 1988, Swaggart was caught with a prostitute at a motel in the New Orleans suburb of Metairie. He gave a famous teary and televised speech in which he admitted, 'I have sinned,' but in 1991 he was found with another prostitute in Los Angeles. After the incidents, Swaggart's following significantly dropped, but he maintained an expansive campus in Baton Rouge and continued preaching at Jimmy Swaggart Ministries. _____

'At this time, there has been no change in his condition. We ask that you continue to lift him up in prayer and believe God for a miracle—but above all, we trust in the Lord's perfect will,' read a statement posted to his official Facebook account on Monday, June 16. The 90-year-old televangelist and preacher went into cardiac arrest at his Baton Rouge, La. home Sunday morning, June 15, WWLTV reported. Less than two hours after a Father's Day message was posted to his official account, another message was posted that asked for prayers. 'On this Father's Day, we urgently ask you to pray for Brother Swaggart. He needs a miracle from heaven right now, this morning. We must have the Lord intervene in this situation and we need your prayers,' the post read. His son, Donnie Swaggart, spoke exclusively to WWLTV about how he and his son, Gabriel, rushed 'to mother's house' and took turns doing chest compressions on Jimmy until medics arrived. "They were able to get a heart beat back," Donnie told the news station. "Right now, he is in ICU and without a miracle, without a miracle, his time will be short." He continued, "We're going to give the Lord an opportunity to work. We will not retreat. We will not quit. We will not give up and whether he's healed here or there, God is still God." Swaggart Ministries spokesperson Megan Kelly told the news station that Jimmy's family has traveled to be with him during this time. The Pentecostal televangelist and gospel artist built the empire known as Jimmy Swaggart Ministries, which also consists of the Family Worship Center and the SonLife Broadcasting Network. Part of his popularity is also due to a 1988 scandal that involved him being caught on camera with a New Orleans sex worker as the two entered a motel. Jimmy was subsequently suspended from his ministries. "Yes, we had a rather large bump in the road," Kelly told the news outlet. "But he has come back and the comeback story has been far greater than anything else. The lives saved. The lives that have been touched through his ministry are endless." Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart in critical condition after cardiac arrest, family says

Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart is in critical condition after he went into cardiac arrest over the weekend, according to a statement from his ministry. Swaggart, 90, went into cardiac arrest around 8 a.m. Sunday while at his home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, his son, Donnie Swaggart, said. Donnie Swaggart said that "without a miracle, his time will be short." Donnie Swaggart said during a Sunday night service that, before EMTs arrived, he and his brother took turns giving their father chest compressions, but "he never regained consciousness." "Emergency personnel responded swiftly and were able to revive his heartbeat before transporting him to the hospital. He remains in the ICU, where he is under close medical care," a spokesperson for Jimmy Swaggart Ministries said. Jimmy Swaggart is one of the country's best-known televangelists. The founder of his eponymous ministry, he began preaching on the radio in the early 1960s. He is the founder of the Family Worship Center in Baton Rouge, where his family continues to preach, and his ministry also runs the SonLife Broadcasting Network, which broadcasts the Family Worship Center's services. Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart speaks at the funeral service for his cousin, rock and roll pioneer Jerry Lee Lewis, in Ferriday, La., Saturday, Nov. 5, 2022. Gerald Herbert / AP Jimmy Swaggart made national headlines in 1988 when he was photographed outside a New Orleans-area hotel with a sex worker. He tearfully admitted to sinning before his congregation during a live television broadcast, although he did not specify that he had solicited a prostitute. The incident led to him being defrocked by the Assemblies of God, although he continued to preach. Three years later, he was again found with a prostitute, this time in Indio, California, according to The Associated Press. He told his congregation that God said to him, "You tell them that Thursday morning you'll be making television programs," adding: "The Lord told me it's flat none of your business," The AP reported. Jimmy Swaggart has also recorded gospel music and is the cousin of the late rock and roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis. Swaggart spoke at Lewis' funeral, and one of Lewis' final records was a gospel album he recorded with Jimmy Swaggart that was released just a few months before Lewis' death.
