Chinese Studio Wants to Bring Back Bruce Lee With AI
If you're a film lover, one of the great things about old classics is that you can always find something to appreciate when you revisit them. If you're a studio executive, one of the great things about old classics is that you own them and can milk them for every penny their worth. At the Shanghai International Film Festival, several Chinese movie studios announced on Thursday that they would be taking their archive of martial arts classics and AI-ifying them. The government-backed 'Kung Fu Movie Heritage Project 100 Classics AI Revitalization Project' will take all-time great kung fu flicks starring the likes of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li and give them new (but almost certainly not better) life with the help of AI. Per the Hollywood Reporter, Zhang Pimin, chairman of the China Film Foundation, described the project as an attempt to give films a look that 'conforms to contemporary film viewing.' It'd be one thing if this were simply a restoration project or a technique to upscale the resolution to something that feels more modern, but according to the Hollywood Reporter, it sounds like at least some of the effort will go into fully remaking the films with AI filters atop them. For instance, a trailer for the new AI-ed take on John Woo's 1986 film A Better Tomorrow was shown off at the festival and reportedly turns its lead Chow Yun-fat into a cyberpunk-looking character. The new take, titled A Better Tomorrow: Cyber Frontier, is being marketed as 'the world's first full-process, AI-produced animated feature film.' Yuck. The studios invited AI animation companies to get involved in the 'revitalization' effort, which will apparently seek to 'reshape the visual aesthetics' of films while trying to 'pay tribute to the original work,' by putting up a fund of 100 million yuan (about $14 million) to help get the ball rolling. Other films that will be involved in the project include Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury (1972), Jackie Chan's Drunken Master (1978) and Jet Li's Once Upon a Time in China (1991)—all films that you can watch right now and will find to be every bit as magical and captivating as they were the day they first hit theaters. The stunt work still stands up, and the camera work still slaps. You can find all three of these, and plenty of other martial arts classics, on streaming. If you're a stickler for image quality, films like Fist of Fury have 4K re-releases available on Blu-ray. Just watch these movies. They don't need AI sloppification to be relevant.

‘Highlight of my life' — Jet Li attends youngest daughter's graduation in New York
AMERICA: The Star reported that the super famous martial artist Jet Li recently took a flight all the way to New York in the US just to be at his youngest daughter Jada's graduation. He's been keeping a bit out of the spotlight lately, but he shared his happiness on Weibo, saying how thrilled he was that all four of his daughters have now successfully finished their college degrees. Photo: Weibo/Jet Li 'Dad is at the bottom of the list, with not even a diploma,' the 62-year-old joked in the caption, before adding, 'This is the highlight of my life, so please allow me to show off!' Spending time in New York Along with his post, Li shared five pictures. Two of them were with his 22-year-old daughter, Jada, and one showed him at what looked like a graduation ceremony. It seems like he also spent some quality time with his other daughter, 25-year-old Jane, while he was in New York. They were just doing regular touristy things in New York. Hopping on the subway to get around, taking a stroll through Central Park, and of course, munching on some classic New York hot dogs. 'It was a rare half-day of leisure. I thought to myself how nice it is to enjoy such a simple and ordinary day. 'The moment I returned to the hotel, my world changed. I was blocked at the entrance. Thank you all for still liking me after all these years,' he wrote. Previous marriage and divorce Li's first wife was an actress named Huang Qiuyan, but their marriage ended in 1990. They had two kids together who are now all grown up – Si Li, who's 37, and Taimi, who's 35. Later on, in 1999, he found love again and married another actress, Nina Li Ching. They've got two kids, Jane and Jada. After his divorce from Huang, there have been speculations about a tense relationship between Li and his two older daughters, but in 2023, the actor disputed these allegations. His most recent acting gig was in Disney's live-action Mulan, which came out in 2020. Jet Li was actually born Li Lian Jie (that's his Chinese name, 李連杰) in Beijing, China, on April 26, 1963. He's a highly acclaimed martial artist, actor, film producer, and former Wushu champion who has achieved international stardom. Li's journey into martial arts began at the young age of eight when he started training at the Beijing Wushu Academy. His talent was quickly recognised, and he went on to become a five-time gold medalist at the Chinese National Wushu Championships from 1974 to 1979.

27 May - Jet Li is elated to announce that his youngest daughter Jada has now graduated from college. The martial arts star is one happy dad in his recent Weibo post on 25 May. The actor posted several photos of him attending the graduation ceremony held at the liberal arts college, Barnard college alongside his eldest daughter Jane to witness Jada's graduation. He wrote, "All four of my daughters have now graduated from university! As for their old dad, I'm at the bottom. I don't even have a primary school diploma." "But this is the proudest moment of my life. Please allow me to brag a little. After more than ten years of hard work, I can finally free to fulfil my own dreams. Congratulations to my youngest daughter, Jada, on her college graduation!" It is noted that aside from Jane and Jada from his marriage with actress Nina Li Chi, he is also a father to daughters Si and Taimi from his previous marriage to Huang Qiuyan, his Beijing Wushu team member. ‘Highlight of my life': Actor Jet Li's youngest daughter Jada graduates from college
Movie star Jet Li was in New York recently to attend his youngest daughter Jada's graduation ceremony. The 62-year-old has been married to former actress Nina Li Chi, 63, since 1999 and they have two daughters – Jane, 25, and Jada, 22. He has two older daughters - Li Si and Li Taimi - from an earlier marriage to former actress Huang Qiuyan. 'All my four daughters have graduated from college,' Jet Li wrote in Chinese on May 25. 'I am at the bottom of the pile as I do not even have a primary school certificate. Please allow me to brag a little as this is the highlight of my life.' The China-born Singapore actor shared photos of himself with both Jane and Jada, as well as one photo with Jada. 'She is finally free to pursue her dreams after more than 10 years of hard work,' Li added. 'Congratulations to my youngest daughter, Jada, for graduating from college.' According to various Chinese-language media outlets, his four daughters received their tertiary education in the United States. Jada is graduating from Barnard College, while Jane is a graduate of Harvard University. Li revealed in a Weibo post earlier in May that his second daughter Li Taimi is an ophthalmologist. Jet Li, whose last movie role was in the Hollywood live-action film Mulan (2020), also shared photos of him signing autographs and posing with fans when he returned to the hotel.
