Review of My Next Breath by Jeremy Renner

Two days after being crushed by a 14,000-pound snowplough on New Year's Day of 2023, actor Jeremy Renner, now 54, posted a selfie from his hospital bed. 'Well, I was high on all sorts of painkillers and morphine,' Jeremy laughs, speaking over a video call from London. The famous selfie is part of Jeremy's harrowing yet ultimately healing memoir about the accident, My Next Breath. 'I didn't realise I was in a coma,' the two-time Academy Award nominee confesses. 'When I woke up, my sister handed me my phone, saying people were worried. I'm like, 'Okay, well, let people know that I'm not gone.' I'm going to get out of here this afternoon. I literally thought I was leaving that day,' he laughs. 'Little did I know how messed up I was.' The good thing about social media, Jeremy says, is you can squelch rumours. 'You can directly say, 'I didn't lose a leg. I'm alive. Everything's fine.' I actually looked pretty good in the selfie I took!' Living a story Though Jeremy has written songs for his three albums, this is Jeremy's first book. 'Starting was the most difficult. I knew, lived and was still living the story. I had to have a solid reason for writing the book. I still am baffled that people are interested. That's why in the prologue I wrote of not wanting to write it.' Jeremy is glad he ignored his initial hesitation and committed to writing. 'It was cathartic and healing and was for others as well.' The Hurt Locker actor worked with a writer for the structure of the memoir. 'This is an emotional and taxing narrative, so I had to be in a vulnerable and open place. We did a lot of interviews, and created an outline that allows for movement, growth and strength.' Talking as he would to a friend, Jeremy says he wrote and dictated from 11 to two every day. 'It was great but exhausting. It's like daily therapy,' he laughs. Though called a memoir, Jeremy insists that My Next Breath is not one in the traditional sense. 'It's not about my life or reflection on my career. This is about living and dying in this incident and then recovering from it and the things learned in that. There is some reflection on some of my life prior (including learning the value of doing his own stunts from Tom Cruise, his co-star in two Mission: Impossible films), and the bread crumbs that led me to recovery.' Fuel for recovery In a school essay, which is part of the book, Jeremy's 11-year-old daughter, Ava, wrote about her proudest moment being when he picked her up from school after the accident. 'She was the fuel for my recovery,' Jeremy says with a proud smile. 'She was the goalpost, the one that I wanted to show that I would get better. The last thing I want to do is make my daughter afraid. I want to make her a confident girl. It's lonely in recovery, but she was always my hope and my light.' The snow cat did a lot of damage, including over 30 broken bones, blunt chest trauma, and caused Jeremy to lose six quarts of blood. Out of these, the one that freaked out Jeremy the most was the broken jaw and the screws in his skull and jaw. 'When they took those screws out, like it's just in a piece of wood and not my jaw, it was terrifying because you're awake for that.' Surprisingly blasé about his left eye being knocked out of its socket, Jeremy says, 'I was dying on the ice, so I didn't care that my eye was out. I was going to worry about that later. I had to worry about breathing. By the time I woke up, my eyeball was already back in my head and working.' While Jeremy has played master archer and Avenger, Hawkeye in a series and several MCU movies, his new superpower is never having a bad day. 'That was given to me because I know what a bad day is, I probably had the worst day. You don't have to be run over by a snow cat to not have bad days. It is in all of our control, in what we choose to do in our lives. And that is another reason why I wrote the book because I don't think you have to go to that extremis to figure it out,' he says. Return to acting With Season 3 of Mayor of Kingstown in June 2024 and Rian Johnson's Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, which will be out on December 12, 2025, Jeremy has signalled his return to acting. 'I do love my job, but not at the cost of what has real value in my life. Its priority has slid down the totem pole.' Family and friends are an important part of accepting work, says Jeremy. 'I do not want my life ripped from me, just so I can entertain. I will not accept being alone or doing things alone any longer, as I've done for 30 years with my career.' There is a near-death moment Jeremy describes in the book where he experiences 'exhilarating peace' lying on the ice. 'You gain clarity and resolve after getting a glimpse behind the curtain of the afterlife. Life on earth can be quite chaotic but all that dies here on earth, thank goodness! I'm not a heaven-and-hell guy, but if there was a hell, it'd be on earth.' The beauty, Jeremy says, comes from being connected. 'We're all connected in a divinity of love, which you can call God. It helps me stay vulnerable and loving to everyone in my life.' My Next Breath Jeremy Renner Simon&Schuster ₹599

Jeremy Renner tells of moment he died - 'just one thing exists'

The Hawkeye star died momentarily when he was crushed under a snowplough - and he says he did not want to return When Haweye star Jeremy Renner was crushed by massive snowplough the experience changed his life. The actor was left with 38 broken bones, a collapsed lung and even his eyeball exploded out of the socket. But as he fought to breathe he momentarily died at the scene - leaving him with an overwhelming feeling of what happens in the afterlife. Speaking on Lorraine on Friday he explained there was just one thing - "love". ‌ He told the show his near death experience was "difficult to quantify". And he said he has realised recently: "The devil doesn't exist when you are dead. That came to me last night. ‌ "The devil - hatred - have to be the same. Hatred dies out, suffocates itself on the coattails of love. That's the only thing you take with you when you die. It's the most beautiful place." And the actor said when he "came back" he hadn't wanted to return. Laughing he told viewers: "Can you imagine? It was like there's my eye, that's sitting on the ice. My twisted legs." The Mayor Kingstown star was injured in the "incident" - he refuses to call it an accident - which happened on New Year's Day in 2023. He was helping a family member get a stuck vehicle out of the estimated three feet of snowfall from the night before when he was run over by a 14,300-lb. snowplow. The Marvel actor was told at the time he was told he would never walk again but has gone on to heal - but has previously said his recovery will be a "forever" process. He has written about his experience and journey to recovery in a book, My Next Breath named after the moment he knew he had to keep on breathing or he would pass out and die. Lorraine viewers were told how the incident left hims with a heart rate so low he was clinically dead, his legs were twisted and his eyeball was out of its socket. ‌ He said: "By the time the paramedics got there I'd already passed and came back. They got there 10 minutes later. My heart rate was pretty low and I was hypothermic at this point. I was more at risk to die permanently from the hypothermia "It's interesting to be able to see your left eye with your right eye. It came out of my head." ‌ He told how when he was 12 he had gone to a Lamaze breathing class with his mum who was pregnant at the time and he had used this later in life such as when doing auditions so he didn't "forget to breathe". It was this which also helped him as he lay in the snow. Trapped under the snowplough he realised he needed to make a conscious effort to breathe or he would die. He said: "I didn't know exactly why but I knew I wasn't breathing and I wasn't going to breathe unless I forced air in. "I was struggling, I was suffocating. My ribcage and my lung was popped and all these other things were happening. I didn't know that at the time but I thought maybe it was a cramp or some other workout. I couldn't get air. It was essential otherwise you pass out, your organs fail and you are dead." ‌ He also told how the experience had changed his life and the way he dealt with fame. Writing in his book he said he often lived as a hermit, eating sandwiches in toilets at airports, waiting until the last second to get out and get on the plane. He said: "There has been a road or a pathway between myself and the public being famous for the man that I am and not the role that I played. It's very different. Sure I can be known as Hawkeye or this person or that person, whatever, but I'm also known for just being the man that I am and being treated as the man that I am, not as a product on the shelf that you deserve a selfie with. "It's become much more intimate and beautiful. He said people would say "meaningful" things such as "glad you are with us". He said people now gave "really encouraging, loving things to say" rather than in the past when it would be 'hey, let's get a selfie together". He said: "It's much more about there is a road paved that makes it very human and I get very wonderful human exchanges now."

The Town (2010) Ben Affleck came into full bloom as a director with The Town. Set in his native Boston, the movie follows a group of devil-may-care bank robbers posed with a crisis. Affleck, who also stars in the film, falls in love with a bank teller at one of their jobs. Featuring a tremendous supporting turn from Jeremy Renner as well as some stunning set pieces, The Town is the kind of crime thriller most people wish there were more of. You can watch The Town on Netflix. Barbarian (2022) One of the most inventive horror movies of the past 10 years, Barbarian is almost literally a thrill ride. It's a movie whose twists and turns are almost impossible to predict, making it difficult to describe. The movie starts out with a relatively simple premise. A woman and a man have discovered that they both booked the same Airbnb, and they decide to stay there together. There's some romantic tension but also something unsettling going on. The rest is best left up to the viewer. Suffice it to say, though, that this movie is stylish, surprising, and a genuine delight. You can watch Barbarian on Netflix. Dune: Part Two (2024) Although there was plenty to admire in Dune, it wasn't until Part Two that director Denis Villeneuve's full vision was realized. The movie follows its central character as he wrestles with his growing messiah complex and desire for revenge against those who destroyed his family. Filled with great performances, Dune: Part Two features the budget to immerse you in a foreign world. Dune was thought to be unadaptable. Thankfully, it turned out not to be, and we got a genuinely thrilling version that paid attention to even the most minute of details. You can watch Dune: Part Two on Netflix.

Jeremy Renner reveals the one thing that got him through horror snowplough accident

Jeremy Renner felt as if he was "on fire and electrocuted and melting" all at once after his snowplough accident. The 54-year-old actor broke 38 bones in his body and sustained a collapsed lung and lacerated liver after being crushed by his snowcat in January 2023 and was so "confused" in the moment but now that he has recounted his journey to recovery in a new book, insisted that he had nothing to do but "breath" his way through the pain. Speaking on UK TV show The One Show, he said: "What is the alternative in that situation when your nerve-endings are on fire, and electrocuted and melting, and drowning, all of it all at once, it was confusing. "The only thing I wasn't doing was breathing, pain is just pain, essentially, so I had to breathe otherwise I would pass out, my organs would fail and I'd die. "That's why the book is the My Next Breath, it's the fight to exhale, then inhale, not realising that the ribcage is collapsed and the lung was punctured. My eyeball came out, when you can see your eye with your other eye, it's like 'Okay...'" The Marvel star is the oldest of seven siblings, and recalled that attending antenatal classes with his mother when she was pregnant was what gave him the power to know just how important breath control was in that moment. He said: "Not a lot of 12-year-old boys get that opportunity, but, ironically, it was probably the thing that gave me the confidence to understand the power that you're mitigating pain with breath. "And believing in that, knowing that, seeing it first hand with my mom in labour. Feeding her ice chips to get her to breathe right and all these things. "That was essentially what I had to do. I had to breathe to stay alive, but it also helped mitigate my pain. It took so much energy to focus on the breath that I didn't have to worry about my eye or my twisted-up legs or that the bones were broken. I wasn't even focusing on or feeling that, I had to breathe. "If you can't breathe, you're drowning, right? It doesn't take very much time to drown so when you're there for 45 minutes, you're really trying to figure out your next breath and that's all that mattered. "I don't even call it an accident because it wasn't, it was an incident."

3 action movies on Netflix you need to watch in June 2025

What's populating the action genre on Netflix? Sicario: Day of the Soldado, the sequel to Denis Villeneuve's Sicario, is being featured on the action homepage. While not as effective as its predecessor, Day of the Soldado features another terrific performance from Benicio del Toro as Alejandro Gillick. Add Soldado to your Netflix queue this month. But first, stream one of our three recommendations below. Our picks include a crime thriller from one of Boston's most famous figures, a feature film adaptation of an espionage TV show, and a Mount Rushmore buddy comedy. Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+. The Town (2010) Argo is the culmination of Ben Affleck's career comeback. Argo might have won Best Picture, but The Town is Affleck's best directorial effort. Set in Affleck's homeland of Boston, The Town follows career criminal Doug MacRay (Affleck), the leader of a heist crew who rob banks for money. During one of their holdups, one of Doug's partners, Jem (Jeremy Renner), takes one hostage: bank manager Claire Keesey (Rebecca Hall). After Claire is set free, Doug attempts to gain her trust to figure out what she knows about the robbers. (Doug and his crew wore masks during the robbery.) What Doug didn't plan for is falling in love with Claire. For the first time in his life, Doug sees a future outside of crime and wants out. However, a ruthless gangster (Pete Postlethwaite) and relentless FBI agent (Jon Hamm) won't let Doug escape his life. Stream The Town on Netflix. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015) In The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Guy Ritchie took a 1960s spy series and injected it with his signature charisma, witty dialogue, and visual flair. Set during the Cold War, the United States and Russia are on the brink of nuclear war. Two Nazi sympathizers kidnap a German scientist and force him to build a weapon that would start World War III. Two spies on opposite sides of the spectrum — CIA Agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) — team with the daughter of the missing scientist (Alicia Vikander) to save civilization. Cavill might have lost out to Daniel Craig on Bond, but The Man from U.N.C.L.E. proved he was more than capable of playing a charming secret agent. (We don't talk about Argylle.) Stream The Man from U.N.C.L.E. on Netflix. Midnight Run (1988) The 1980s has a strong case for being the top decade for action comedies. 48 Hrs., Beverly Hills Cop, The Naked Gun, Tango & Cash, and arguably the best one of all, Midnight Run. Robert De Niro stars as Jack Walsh, a bounty hunter hired by bail bondsman Eddie Moscone (Joe Pantoliano) to find the mob's accountant, Jonathan 'The Duke' Mardukas (Charles Grodin). Despite being pitched as a simple job (a 'midnight run'), the cross-country chase presents multiple issues for Jack, especially after he finds the Duke and experiences his unpredictable personality. The FBI and the mob might not get a chance to speak with the Duke the way the trip shapes out. You will not find five better tandems within this genre than De Niro and Grodin. Stream Midnight Run on Netflix.
