'The Boys' Jensen Ackles Teases New Series ‘Countdown' Fans Won't Want to Miss
The Boys has led to multiple television and movie roles for the stars of the hit show, although most of them had lengthy resumes before the popular series. However, the emergence of one popular character went so well that it led to a spinoff series for Jensen Ackles. Ackles, who portrays Soldier Boy in The Boys, will be a centerpiece of the upcoming spinoff Vought Rising, which already has plenty of intrigue surrounding it. Along with that series, Ackles is also a headliner for another upcoming Amazon Prime Video show, Countdown. The new crime series is set to be released on June 25, with an impressive roster featuring Jessica Camacho, Eric Dane and Elliot Knight, among others. Ahead of the show's release, Ackles spoke to TV Insider and hyped up the series while also explaining what initially drew him to the project. "Then I got a clear sense of what he wanted to do. I was like, 'Oh, this is not only in my wheelhouse, it's the stuff I grew up being attracted to,'" Ackles said of the show Countdown. The Boys star also had high praise for the rapport between the characters in the show, stating there's a "disgusting amount of chemistry." "You really get a sense of who these people are. Not just together as the team, but individually," Ackles added. "That lets the audience invest in the characters and not just the was a disgusting amount of chemistry that was formed very quickly off-set that lends itself to on-set chemistry."It's high praise from Ackles, and showrunner Derek Haas explained that while many crime shows in previous years have embraced the "dark" aspect of detectives, Countdown will be the opposite. Haas described it as classic popcorn entertainment. "The last 20 years of television—not in a bad way—[has embraced] the sort of dark sensibility where if you have a detective, it's like they're so haunted by the job, they drink and all of these things,' assesses Haas. As TV Insider explained of Haas's assessment: "This new series, he says, is the opposite: a classic popcorn entertainment with cheeky heroes, smart dialogue, and practical stunts galore." "I just like the fun vibe of those old movies," Haas said. Fans of Ackles' work should be excited about what's ahead for the man many know as Soldier Boy, and they should expect to see a lot of him in the coming years.'The Boys' Jensen Ackles Teases New Series 'Countdown' Fans Won't Want to Miss first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 16, 2025

Eric Dane is determined to keep acting amid ALS diagnosis: 'I love what I give'
Eric Dane has no plans to slow down after his ALS diagnosis. The star, 52, made his first red carpet appearance since announcing his diagnosis at the Los Angeles premiere of his Prime Video crime series Countdown on Wednesday. There, he told Variety he was feeling "good" and is determined to continue acting while tending to the disorder. 'It always feels great to be on a set. It's great to be employed," Dane said. "I love what I give. I'm going to keep doing it." Appearing alongside costars Jensen Ackles, Jessica Camacho, Elliot Knight, Violett Beane, and Uli Latukefu, Dane added, 'It's nice to be here with everybody and see the hours and hours of work that we put into this come alive on screen.' Also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurological disorder that affects motor neurons, causing degeneration of nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain. While there is currently no cure for ALS, there are treatments that help slow progression and improve quality of life. Earlier this week, Dane gave his first TV interview since announcing his diagnosis in April. He appeared on Good Morning America with Diane Sawyer to recount how the symptoms have affected his way of life. "My left side is functioning, my right side has completely stopped working," Dane shared, noting that his left arm has also gotten considerably weaker. "I feel like maybe a couple more months and I won't have my left hand either. It's sobering." FULL INTERVIEW: Former "Grey's Anatomy" star Eric Dane speaks out for the first time in a television interview about his battle with ALS, a degenerative neurological disorder. "I don't think this is the end of my story." @ABC News' @DianeSawyer reports. — Good Morning America (@GMA) June 16, 2025The symptoms began about a year and a half ago with weakness in his right hand, though he "didn't really think anything of it at the time," Dane shared. "I thought maybe I'd been texting too much or my hand was fatigued." Of the moment he was diagnosed, he said, "I will never forget those three letters. It's on me the second I wake up. It's not a dream." Along with Countdown — about a police officer who uncovers a sinister plot after joining a secret task force to investigate a murder — Dane has several projects on the horizon, including Euphoria's long-awaited season 3. "You're going to get more of the same, which I think for that show is a good thing,' Dane teased to Variety of the new season, which is expected to return some time next year. 'We're moving right along. I don't know exactly what it is I'm doing, per se, but I trust [series creator] Sam Levinson with every fiber of my being.' The actor is also slated to appear in director Malik Vitthal's upcoming thriller film Family Secrets alongside Maia Mitchell, Tyriq Withers, and Thomas Doherty. Does Jensen Ackles' Countdown Hero Have BDE — Big Dean (Winchester) Energy? ‘There Are Familiar Aspects,' Says Supernatural Vet
In the opening minutes of Prime Video's Countdown thriller — which was created by Derek Haas (executive producer of the #OneChicago franchise and co-creator of FBI: International) — an officer with the Department of Homeland Security is murdered in broad daylight. Veteran LAPD detective Mark Meachum, portrayed by Jensen Ackles, is in turn recruited to a secret task force to investigate, alongside undercover agents from all branches of law enforcement. More from TVLine Eric Dane: My Countdown Task Force Leader Is 'Unapologetic, Determined' - and Wears the Hell Out of a Suit We Were Liars EPs Talk Book-to-Show Changes, Including Which Sinclair Family Member Didn't Make the Cut For First Time, Streaming Viewing Topped Broadcast and Cable Combined in May 'Task Force Hurricane' is led by SAC Nathan Blythe (Euphoria's Eric Dane) and also includes DEA badass Amber Oliveras (All Rise's Jessica Camacho), LAPD gangs unit officer Lucas Finau (Young Rock's Uli Latukefu), and FBI agents Keyonte Bell (The Boys' Elliot Knight) and Evan Shepherd (The Flash's Violett Beane). Speaking with the series' cast on Tuesday afternoon, TVLine invited the actors to describe the character played by the co-star sitting next to them. For Dane, that was Ackles. Meachum, Dane said, is 'a singular-minded, hyper-intense, highly capable taskmaster/bulldog investigator, who will not stop until the whistle blows.' Some of those adjectives could also describe Ackles' longtime TV alter ego, from The CW's Supernatural. So we asked Ackles: 'Would you say that Mark Meachum has BDE — Big Dean (Winchester) Energy?' After letting loose with a hearty laugh, Ackles nodded, 'Uh, yeah. I think you could. I think you could definitely say there's some familiarity there. 'I don't know about similarity,' he continued, 'but there are some familiar aspects to those two characters, in the fact that they are a little cavalier the way that they attack the dark forces.' Another difference is the nature of those dark forces. On Countdown, for example, they come in the form of human Belarusians with a bone to (explosively) pick. 'The biggest difference is that Mark has actual, corporeal people that he's fighting, whereas Dean Winchester is fighting ghosts, demons, witches, vampires…,' Ackles reminded with a chuckle. To do what Dean and his brother Sam (played by Jared Padalecki) did, 'You need an entire trunk full of various weapons,' Ackles added. 'But Mark, he likes his pistol.' Countdown premieres Wednesday, June 25, with its first three episodes, followed by weekly drops through Sept. 3. Want scoop on , or for any other TV show? Eric Dane: My Countdown Task Force Leader Is ‘Unapologetic, Determined' — and Wears the Hell Out of a Suit
In Prime Video's upcoming Countdown thriller, Special Agent in Charge Nathan Blythe proves to be a 'formidable foe' for any ne'er-do-wells — and he looks damn good while doing it! Created by Derek Haas (EP of the #OneChicago franchise and co-creator of FBI: International), Countdown is set in motion when an officer with the Department of Homeland Security is murdered in broad daylight. SAC Blythe (played by Euphoria's Eric Dane) is tapped to head up task force 'Hurricane,' comprised of LAPD detective Mark Meachum (Supernatural's Jensen Ackles), DEA badass Amber Oliveras (All Rise's Jessica Camacho), LAPD gangs unit officer Lucas Finau (Young Rock's Uli Latukefu), and FBI agents Keyonte Bell (The Boys' Elliot Knight) and Evan Shepherd (The Flash's Violett Beane). 'There Are Familiar Aspects,' Says Supernatural Vet The Sandman's Final Season Trailer Features Dream's Return to Hell, Warns 'All Good Stories Come to an End' Though positioned as an 'all-star' team of LEOs, it soon becomes evident that the task force Blythe hand-picked is more a collection of broken toys. 'They don't understand why they work well together…,' Dane told TVLine on Tuesday afternoon, 'but I do.' Blythe himself isn't one to sit behind the desk in his makeshift task force office and simply receive updates. Rather, he involves himself in field work while also doing his damndest to keep District Attorney Grayson Valwell (Merrick McCartha) — an ambitious politico and would-be valor thief — from getting in the team's way. 'I like playing characters that are unapologetic, and determined, and won't back down. And there's a lot of that in Nathan Blythe,' Dane said. 'He's also a very earnest and focused character — I like that about him — but what I really dig about him is the 'stillness' which he sets an example' for the task force's more impulsive members. Ackles, who plays Team Hurricane's most reckless member, described Dane's character as 'a formidable foe for anybody out there trying to make a move,' and a boss who doesn't so much lead by example but 'lead by strength. 'And I love how much he believes in his team,' Ackles added. 'I love that he believes in these people even though they are not the obvious choice.' Describing Meachum et al as 'a ragtag group,' Ackles likened SAC Blythe to 'the coach of the Bad News Bears.' This coach, though, dresses a helluva lot better than Walter Matthau's Morris Buttermaker. When he strides across a tarmac or office plaza, damn, it's like an Armani ad come to life. '[Eric] wears the hell out of a suit!' Ackles declared of his co-star. 'Every time he showed up on the set, I'm like, 'Who makes this? What are you working with here?'' Accepting the compliments from both Ackles and myself, Dane simply said with a smile, 'We have a great wardrobe department.'
