Jason Constantine, Co-President of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, Dead at 55
Jason Constantine, co-president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group who has been with the film studio for the last 25 years, nearly since the company's inception, has passed away following a long fight with cancer. He was 55. In his time with Lionsgate Constantine has overseen some of the studio's biggest franchises, including 'John Wick' and 'Saw,' having pushed for the latter after seeing just a brief concept short, and he's been closely associated with 'The Expendables' and award-winning films like 'Crash,' 'Precious,' 'Knives Out,' 'I Can Only Imagine,' and many more. Constantine was elevated to the co-president role in 2023. Constantine began his career as a junior director of acquisitions at the company that preceded Lionsgate, Trimark Pictures, and he had been a passionate lover of the movies and being a part of the business from an early age. He received his B.A. from Princeton University and his M.F.A in film production from Loyola Marymount University. He wrote and directed two short films: a rom-com called 'For Whom The Wedding Bell Tolls' and a drama called 'Ashes' that won a PGA award for Best Student Short Film. 'Hollywood movie exec Jason Constantine dead at 55 after heartbreaking health battle
A Hollywood movie executive who helped bring some of cinema's biggest franchises to the big screen has died following a battle with brain cancer. Jason Constantine, the 55-year-old co-president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, died Tuesday at his home in Los Angeles after a long fight with the disease. Constantine began his career at Lionsgate more than 25 years ago at the predecessor company Trimark Pictures where he was a director of acquisitions. At Lionsgate, he was involved in several of the studio's major films, including ' John Wick,' and 'Saw,' which he pushed Lionsgate to acquire early on after watching a brief concept short. The exec also worked closely on hit films including 'The Expendables,' 'I Can Only Imagine,' 'The Hitman's Bodyguard,' 'Kick Ass,' 'Rambo: Last Blood,' 'Angel Has Fallen,' and 'Plane.' His work also included critically acclaimed films such as 'The Girl with the Pearl Earring,' 'Arbitrage,' 'Margin Call,' and 'Dear White People.' Constantine helped bring horror favorites 'Cabin in the Woods' and 'Rejects' trilogy to audiences. He was also associated with films including best picture Oscar winner 'Crash' in 2004, the drama 'Precious' in 2009 and 'Knives Out' in 2019. The producer died at his Los Angeles home on Tuesday after a long battle with brain cancer. Across ten movies made from 2004 - 2023, the Saw franchise has made over AU$1bn at the box office. Wan went on to thank his late friend for helping him transform what began as a student film into a billion dollar franchise In addition to a mostly American cast, the films featured Australian actor Costas Mandylor as a villainous detective. The franchise kicked off with Saw, which hit theatres October 27, 2004, and helped put director Wan and writer Whannell on the map. The first film was produced on a modest budget and made over $100m at the box office, sparking an iconic franchise. Saw II followed just a year later, with Darren Lynn Bousman replacing Wan at the helm and co-writing the script with Whannell. The most recent movie movie, Saw X, was released in 2023 and was produced by both Wan and Constantine.
