Community Composting Project coming to Binghamton
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The City of Binghamton is working to reduce its ecological footprint as it announces a new community initiative. On Thursday, Mayor Jared Kraham held a news conference to discuss the City's new community composting program. The project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by keeping organic waste out of landfills. In the coming months, VINES will create a community composting system that is accessible to residents. Cornell Cooperative Extension will also lead outreach efforts, educating the public on the importance of composting as well as on how to do it at home. Executive Director of VINES Amelia LoDolce says the project will turn waste into an asset for the community. 'It's been a dream that we've had for a number of years to launch a composting facility here at the Urban Farm and to really develop a more robust community composting program where people can just walk out of their house, down the block, into a community garden near them, and bring their food scraps. So, we're excited to bring that to fruition,' said LoDolce. The project is made possible by $215,000 in grant funding. It is expected to begin in the fall. Security Mutual Week begins in Binghamton
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The City of Binghamton is saluting one of its oldest and most community-minded businesses. Mayor Jared Kraham raised the flag and declared it Security Mutual week in the city Monday morning. The annual event recognizes the life insurance company for its commitment to our area, including its annual donation of hanging flower baskets to beautify the downtown. This week, more than 100 key distributors and employees will be in town participating in the company's Advanced Marketing Seminar for the first time since the pandemic. President and CEO Kirk Gravely says Security Mutual's local legacy dates back to its founding in 1886. 'We are proud of our contributions to the community. And even as we expand across the country, we will never lose sight of our commitment to this great city. Binghamton is our home and for that, we are extremely proud,' said Gravely. Among the company's other charitable efforts are the Jim 'Mudcat' Grant Legacy All-Star Golf Tournament, which raises funds for local non-profits. And the Sock Out Cancer initiative, which has raised $1.8 million to support cancer patients since its founding in 2017. This year's fundraising concert featuring Beatles and Rolling Stones tribute bands is scheduled for October 18 at the Forum Theater. Stepped up patrols in Binghamton ahead of summer
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – As we head into the summer months, community members can expect to see an increase in police presence in the City of Binghamton. On Tuesday, Mayor Jared Kraham announced that the Binghamton Police Department is increasing traffic patrols in order to reduce speeding and violations. Kraham released the following statement: 'I've heard from a growing number of residents concerned about drivers going too fast through their neighborhoods or running stop signs, putting others at risk. Binghamton Police will be cracking down on speeding and other traffic violations over the coming weeks, with extra patrols focused on reducing the number of drivers who break the law and make our neighborhoods less safe. Alongside foot and bike patrols and other community policing initiatives, this increased traffic enforcement is part of our broader effort to improve neighborhood safety across Binghamton.' During the initiative, Binghamton Police will focus on high traffic areas, giving special attention to school zones, City park zones, and hospital zones. Officers will also use a portable speed trailer, which displays drivers' speed as they pass, to help reduce speeding. Salvation Army of Binghamton continues services with mobile kitchen and pantry
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – After being forced to close earlier this month, The Salvation Army of Binghamton has found a new way to keep community members fed. The charity reopened its free community meal after securing a state-of-the-art mobile canteen. The food truck, which is a high-tech kitchen on wheels, will serve five meals a week at American Legion Post 80 on Main Street. The Salvation Army is also continuing its food and hygiene pantry. On May 15, the Binghamton Corps Community Center was closed at the request of Mayor Jared Kraham after a stabbing claimed the life of one man during a meal event. Captain Joseph Hansen says that with the mobile services, the organization has seen several new faces. He says they serve on average 100 meals a day. 'We just want to make sure we're meeting the mission and the needs of this community. Food insecurity is such a high need in this area that we wanted to make sure that we weren't going to be causing a problem by not being in the fight. So, we wanted to make sure to get back out there as fast as possible,' said Hansen. The Salvation Army will be moving to a new location at 86 Walnut Street on the city's Westside in October. Hansen says the mobile canteen is located 100 yards away from the new site to get people used to coming in that direction. Hansen says the organization is in need of help during this time of transition. It is currently collecting donations and is seeking volunteers to help deliver and serve meals. Mayor Kraham comments on recent attacks on Jewish community
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Mayor Jared Kraham released a statement on Monday, addressing recent terrorist attacks and voicing his support for the local Jewish community. Kraham issued the following statement: 'Following the horrific terrorist attacks in Colorado, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania, I am deeply troubled by a growing wave of antisemitic violence and hate across our nation. 'We must fiercely condemn these acts of violence and reject hateful antisemitic rhetoric of all kinds. They have no place in our community, our government or our politics. 'Over the last few weeks, I've been in touch with Binghamton's Jewish faith leaders to reaffirm the City's commitment to the safety of our Jewish friends and neighbors. The Binghamton Police Department will continue to work closely with places of worship and faith-based community organizations to ensure security and peace of mind.'
