'A Minecraft Movie' Starts Streaming Today. Here's How and Where to Watch it

If you caught some morsels from A Minecraft Movie on social media -- videos of theater audiences going wild over a chicken jockey or Jack Black passionately singing about cooking chicken with lava -- today you can stream the flick that started it all. The Max streaming service, which will soon take on the title of HBO Max again, previously announced that the video game movie would premiere in June before sharing the exact release date for the PG-rated comedy. A Minecraft Movie stars Black, Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen and Jennifer Coolidge and follows protagonists as they try to get back to the real world after ending up in the unfamiliar, cubic Overworld. There are mid- and post-credits scenes, themes of creativity and adventure, menacing piglins and, of course, zombies riding on chickens. A Minecraft Movie is directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre) and has been a global and domestic box office success. If you're intrigued to see what a live-action Minecraft adaptation looks like, or you want to rewatch the chicken jockey scene at home, here's when you can stream A Minecraft Movie on Max. How to watch A Minecraft Movie on Max The live-action video game adaptation hit Max in the early morning hours on June 20, (3:01 a.m. ET, to be exact) and is available to stream now. A version with American Sign Language is also streaming on the platform. There are three standalone Max plans to choose from, and you can also opt for a bundle of Max, Disney Plus and Hulu if you want all three. Just getting ad-supported Max on its own costs $10 per month or $100 per year. There are also $17 per month and $21 per month ad-free Max plans (live events on ad-free plans will still have commercials). Separately, A Minecraft Movie is available to rent at Amazon and Fandango at Home for $10.

‘A Minecraft Movie' Debuts On Streaming On Max This Week

The Jack Black and Jason Momoa blockbuster hit A Minecraft Movie begins streaming on Max this week. Directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite), A Minecraft Movie is based on the classic video game Minecraft, which was released by Mojang Studios in 2009. The film opened in theaters on April 4 and arrived on digital streaming via premium video on demand on May 13. After earning $167.2 million in its opening weekend domestically, A Minecraft Movie went on to earn $423.7 million from North American theaters and $527.5 million in international ticket sales for a worldwide box office tally of $951.3 million. The film had a $150 million production budget before prints and advertising costs, according to The Numbers. In addtion to the film's big box office take, A Minecraft Movie inspired an in-theater TikTok craze surrounding the film's "Chicken Jockey" scene. Eventually, some theater chains embraced the enthusiasm of its moviegoers and held special Chicken Jockey screenings. After teasing in May that A Minecraft Movie was 'coming soon' to Max, Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment announced last week that the film will debut on the streaming service on Friday, June 20. For viewers who don't subscribe to Max, the streaming service offers an ad-based tier for $9.99 per month or an ad-free tier for $16.99 per month without ads. Additionally, Max offers an ad-free tier for $20.99 per month that includes 4K Ultra HD programming. Per Warner Bros. Discovery, the summary for A Minecraft Movie reads, 'Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn't just help you craft, it's essential to one's survival! "Four misfits — Garrett 'The Garbage Man' Garrison (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks) — find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. 'To get back home, they'll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Jack Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative … the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.' Rated PG, A Minecraft Movie also stars Jennifer Coolidge and the voices of Rachel House, Jemaine Clement, Bret McKenzie, Matt Berry and director Jared Hess. A Minecraft Movie arrives on Max on Friday.

Will People Care About the ‘Minecraft' Chicken Jockey From the Comfort of Their Homes?

A Minecraft Movie already had a towering built-in fan base thanks to its source material being the best-selling video game of all time. But few could have predicted that the movie—a goofy comedy starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa as human characters who get pulled into the chaotic cubic world—would become a Rocky Horror-style interactive sensation, with wild antics in theaters going viral almost overnight. Director Jared Hess found the 'chicken jockey' frenzy to be hilarious; star Black took a somewhat more measured tone. But theaters knew anything that puts butts in seats is a good thing, and promoted 'Block Party Edition' screenings especially for fans who wanted to sing and scream and meme along. Now the chance to view A Minecraft Movie on streaming—whether you want to embrace the madness (please, no live barnyard animals!) or simply watch one of the year's biggest surprise hits in peace—is nearly here. It hits Max June 20, and HBO linear on June 21. Max will also feature a version of A Minecraft Movie with an American Sign Language, further expanding the movie's potential reach. Here's the official synopsis for anyone who doesn't have an instant visceral reaction to the line 'I… am Steve!': 'Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn't just help you craft, it's essential to one's survival! Four misfits—Garrett 'The Garbage Man' Garrison (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers), and Dawn (Danielle Brooks)—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they'll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Jack Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.' A sequel to A Minecraft Movie has not yet been officially announced, but given the first film's success—and Hess' enthusiasm about returning; in April, he told Deadline that 'it seems like there's already talk about [a sequel] happening, so I'm super excited. It'll be so much fun to go back into the world'—makes it seem very likely. Will you stream A Minecraft Movie at home, and if so… how crazy are you going to get while watching it?
