Loxley 8-year-old surprised at OWA as ‘Magic Moments' families celebrate

FOLEY, Ala. (WKRG) — It's tradition, one day a year, Magic Moments families enjoy all that OWA has to offer free of charge. Mobile secures historic funding for affordable housing 'We have a heart for our state, our people. We just want to give back. That's what we do,' said Poarch Creek Tribal Council member Sandy Hollinger. For almost 300 family members who have been granted wishes in the past by Magic Moments, it was a day of celebration. 'This is the seventh time we have done it,' said President and CEO of Creek Enterprises, Cody Williamson. 'Hopefully, we will do it a lot more after this.' The Murphy family, from Loxley, arrived at OWA with a secret. 'We've known for a while. We haven't told her,' Emily Murphy said in a whisper. Their daughter Johanna, adopted four years ago from India, would be the latest recipient of a Magic Moment. The 8-year-old was born with a genetic disorder called sacral agenesis that requires her to use a wheelchair. That doesn't stop her. She does just about anything she wants, and she loves amusement parks. The visit to OWA was about to get even better for Johanna. Thanks to Magic Moments, the Murphy family received a 'Passport to Magic' donated by the Poarch Creek Indians. The 'Theme Park Experience' began at OWA and will continue to Disney World, SeaWorld, and Universal Orlando. 'It is a blessing to my heart to know that there are good people who want to support those families that need it,' said Murphy. Reigning ‘American Idol' winner Jamal Roberts brings down the house at BET Awards with Kirk Franklin, Tamar Braxton, and more gospel superstars

Weeks after winning American Idol, Jamal Roberts had a star-studded coronation at the BET Awards. The 27-year-old gospel and R&B singer from Meridian, Miss., won Season 23 of ABC's reality TV show on May 18 against country singer John Foster. In doing so, Roberts became the first Black man to win American Idol since Ruben Studdard 22 years prior. "I'm anointed. I know how to use it. I know how to tap in," Roberts told Gold Derby after his victory. The nearly five-hour telecast prioritized entertainment, with special honors being doled out to Mariah Carey, Jamie Foxx, and Snoop Dogg. On the awards front, Kendrick Lamar finished the night with a leading five wins for music. The Best Movie prize went to the documentary Luther: Never Too Much. Denzel Washington was honored as Best Actor, while Cynthia Erivo claimed the award for Best Actress. Hours before the BET Awards, Roberts serenaded NeNe Leakes on her talk show with a soulful (and completely a cappella) rendition of Joe's "All the Things (Your Man Won't Do)." The Real Housewives star was clearly moved by his voice, as she repeatedly shimmied her shoulders. "I'm just shining, honey!" she shouted when he mentioned a lyric about her shining like a diamond. The BET Awards wasn't the first time Jamal Roberts and Kirk Franklin appeared together at the same venue. During last month's American Idol finale, Franklin took the stage with contestant Canaan James Hill for a compilation of "Melodies from Heaven" and "Love Theory." Later on that night, Roberts performed "Unpretty" and "Liar" with Jelly Roll, and then belted out "Heal" as his winning song. Roberts went viral during his time on the competition show with his performances of "Tennessee Whiskey," "Liar," "Forever," "Try a Little Tenderness," "Shout," "Heal," "Undo It," "I Believe," "Go the Distance," "A Change Is Gonna Come," "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," and "Beauty and the Beast." The 23rd season of American Idol was hosted as always by Ryan Seacrest, and featured Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie in the judges' seats. It will be eligible at the upcoming 2025 Emmys. Kirk Franklin Receives Ultimate Icon Award, Performs Medley of Hits to Close 2025 BET Awards

Kirk Franklin closed the 2025 BET Awards by performing a medley of hits featuring Tamar Braxton, Muni Long, Jamal Roberts and Salt from Salt-N-Pepa after he received an Ultimate Icon Award. 'I never felt the love of a mother or a father,' he said during his acceptance speech when talking about being adopted. 'The only time I felt love was when I sat behind the piano and wrote songs to Jesus. People loved my songs and the more I wrote, the more people listened. Thank you to all of you that still listen. Thank you to every group, singer, musician that's been the microphone to my pain.' 'I am not perfect,' he told the crowd. 'I fail, I sin, I am not a perfect Christian, I'm not a perfect husband, and we all know I'm not a perfect father. I'm not even a perfect artist because I can't even sing, which makes this award even more amazing, because what I really do don't make sense and if you're listening to this that's when you know it's God when it don't make sense.' Franklin then shut things down by performing some of his popular songs like 'Stomp,' 'Silver & Gold,' and 'Melodies From Heaven,' with D.C. Young Fly serving as a pastor delivering a sermon right before Franklin and his army of performers went into an energized remix of 'Revolution.' Snoop Dogg, Mariah Carey and Jamie Foxx also received Ultimate Icon Awards at Monday night's show. Jelly Roll Lands A New Bestseller With Some Help From ‘American Idol'

Jelly Roll's 'Unpretty' debuts in the top 10 after American Idol duet with winner Jamal Roberts ... More while fellow single "Liar" also soars. CLEVELAND, OHIO - AUGUST 3: Jelly Roll performs during WWE SummerSlam 2024 at Cleveland Browns Stadium on August 3, 2024 in Cleveland, Ohio. (Photo) Jelly Roll's latest album Beautifully Broken has already spent months on the Billboard charts, and fans are still heavily consuming the country and rock project. The full-length earns a bit of a boost this week after the multi-genre singer-songwriter appeared on American Idol and dueted with Jamal Roberts, who went on to win the twenty-third iteration of the reality staple. The two musicians delivered collaborative renditions of two of Jelly Roll's tracks from his latest release, and thanks to that high-profile performance, one of the featured tunes has become yet another top 10 hit for the Grammy-nominated superstar. 'Unpretty' launches on a pair of Billboard rankings this frame. The track, taken from Beautifully Broken but which has not yet been pushed as a proper single, debuts at No. 8 on the Rock Digital Song Sales chart. That new placement gives Jelly Roll his fourteenth career top 10 showing on that list. The same cut has been classified by Billboard as both rock and country, qualifying it for not only the Rock Digital Song Sales chart, but also the Country Digital Song Sales tally. That second list is a bit more competitive this time around, so Jelly settles for launching the track at No. 12, collecting his twenty-third career appearance in the process. In both instances, 'Unpretty' earns the third-highest debut on the two charts. On the rock side, Jelly lands behind 'God Is a Weapon' by Falling in Reverse and Marilyn Manson (No. 4) and 'Let You Fade' by Linkin Park (No. 6). Over on the country list, American Idol season 23 runner-up John Foster debuts in second place with 'Tell That Angel I Love Her,' while 'What I Want' by Morgan Wallen and Tate McRae kicks off its run at No. 10. Jelly Roll and Roberts paired 'Unpretty' with 'Liar,' which was released last summer as a single from Beautifully Broken. That track rejoins the Country Digital Song Sales tally at No. 3 and rises to the runner-up spot on the rock-only list. Sales of 'Unpretty' grew by more than 1,800% from one week to the next, according to Luminate, and that gain is tied directly to American Idol. Purchases of 'Liar,' while greater, increased by just under 200% during the same timeframe.
