Tough mudders: Reds improving approach when rain interferes at GABP
If you sense that rain has been a pervasive theme in the 2025 Cincinnati Reds' season, you're right. And in no game was that more evident than Wednesday's rain-shortened win. More than three hours of combined weather delays at Great American Ball Park on Wednesday resulted in a Reds' 4-2 victory. The game was called around midnight with two outs and a runner on as right fielder Jake Fraley batted in the bottom of the sixth inning. Advertisement With a 12:40 p.m. first pitch looming for the following afternoon, the game became the fifth weather-shortened game in Great American Ball Park history. Wednesday's contest was the 10th Reds game impacted by rain this season, home and away, with eight of those games being delayed. A June 6 game against the Arizona Diamondbacks was suspended and completed the next day. An April 29 game against the St. Louis Cardinals was rained out and made up the next day as part of a day-night doubleheader. Overall, the Reds have a losing record in games impacted by rain (4-6), but they've won their last two at home when rain interfered. On Wednesday, after the initial 2:07 rain delay that forced the game to start at 9:15 p.m., there was a threat for more rain to arrive later in the night. There was a sense that the game might be a race to get ahead in time for the second round of precipitation in case it caused the end of the game before nine innings were played. Advertisement Had the Reds played the game with weather in mind − Francona said they didn't − it almost went perfectly. Cincinnati took the lead in the bottom of the first inning, tacked on run, and didn't look back. On the defensive side, they played and pitched soundly. "We didn't know it was going to be shortened," Francona said. "I'm always of the opinion that adding on is very good for us regardless of how many innings we're gonna play." Reds starting pitcher Nick Lodolo was credited with a complete game for his six innings of work. Lodolo's outing, plus Andrew Abbot's complete game, nine-inning outing against the Cleveland Guardians on June 10, made 2025 the Reds' first season with multiple complete games since 2020. Advertisement "Obviously, you just want to keep going," Lodolo said. "You can't try to pitch to that (the rain) or anything. I had no idea what was going to happen. So, you go as long as you can until, basically like today, it happened to work out pretty good for us." As for biding time during rain delays, Francona said his activities vary. "Different stuff," he said. "Play cribbage with 'Nap' (bench coach Mike Napoli). Just try to pass the time... Only so much you can do." Wade Miley captures first win since '23 as Reds top Guardians
June 10 - Jake Fraley socked a solo homer in a three-hit game while Wade Miley earned his first victory in nearly two years as the visiting Cincinnati Reds beat the Cleveland Guardians 7-4 on Monday night. Miley (1-0) worked five innings, allowing three runs on five hits in his second appearance since joining the team on Wednesday following his recovery from Tommy John surgery performed in May 2024. The 38-year-old struck out two and walked four. Miley won for the first time since Sept. 21, 2023, when he and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals. The left-hander also made longtime Cleveland manager Terry Francona's return with Cincinnati a successful one. Emilio Pagan worked the ninth inning for his 16th save. The Reds won their fourth straight game overall and clinched the season series with in-state rival Cleveland, claiming custody of the Ohio Cup for the first time in 11 years. Cincinnati won all three at home against the Guardians last month. TJ Friedl hit a solo homer in the third inning, then scored on a Christian Encarnacion-Strand sacrifice fly in the fifth that put Cincinnati ahead for good at 4-3. Gavin Lux (sixth-inning single), Will Benson (seventh-inning single) and Connor Joe (ninth-inning double) tacked on RBI hits for the Reds. The Guardians scored three times in the bottom of the third on singles from Angel Martinez, Jose Ramirez and Carlos Santana to go up 3-2, but Fraley tied it in the fourth with his homer to right-center. Fraley finished 3-for-4, raising his average to .218. Guardians right-hander Luis L. Ortiz (3-7) last 4 2/3 innings and gave up four runs on nine hits. He struck out five and walked one while falling to 1-5 in nine starts since April 23. Cleveland has dropped three of four on a six-game homestand that began with a weekend series against the Houston Astros. CLEVELAND (AP) — Jake Fraley, had three hits, including a home run in the fourth inning, Wade Miley got his first win since 2023 and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Cleveland Guardians 7-4 Monday night in Terry Francona's return to Progressive Field. TJ Friedl also went deep for the Reds, who have won four straight and are over .500 for the first time since May 19. Bo Naylor had a solo shot for Cleveland. The Guardians have dropped four of five overall and have lost all four of their meetings with the Reds this season. Francona managed Cleveland for 11 seasons (2013-23) before being hired by the Reds last October. Miley (1-0) got the win in his second game and first start since signing a one-year deal with the Reds on June 4. He went five innings and allowed three runs and five hits. The 38-year old left-hander signed a minor-league contract with the Reds on Feb. 4 and was with the club during spring training as he worked his way back from Tommy John surgery. He made four starts for Triple-A Louisville before opting out of his minor-league deal on June 1. He signed with the Reds three days later after Hunter Greene was placed on the injured list due to a groin injury. Emilio Pagán picked up his 16th save. With two outs in the fourth inning, Fraley connected on a slider from Cleveland starter Luis Ortiz (3-7) and put into the stands in right center to tie the game at 3-3. Friedl led off the third inning by driving a 97.9 mile fastball from Ortiz over the wall in right-center. For the third time this season the left leg of Austin Hays has suffered an injury that landed him on the 10-day Injured List. Advertisement The key offensive improvement the Reds made during the off-season has been awesome when Hays is healthy but he has already missed 31 of the Reds' 54 games. Hays is the Reds' leading hitter with a .303 average, six doubles, three triples, six home runs and 25 RBI. He is slashing, .303/.346/.555 with an OPS at .901 but his absence led to several shutout losses. Hays missed 16 games with a left calf strain to start the season. He was on the injured list with a left hamstring strain that cost him eight games. On Wednesday he fouled a ball off his left foot and will be out until at least June 8 with a left foot contusion. Altogether the Reds are 10-14 with Hays out. The Reds activated Jake Fraley from the injured list to take Hays spot. Fraley missed 17 games with a tender left calf. Reds place OF Austin Hays on the 10-day IL with bruised left foot
CHICAGO (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds placed outfielder Austin Hays on the 10-day injured list on Friday because of a left foot contusion. The Reds also activated outfielder Jake Fraley from the 10-day IL before their series opener against the Chicago Cubs. Right-hander Lyon Richardson was recalled from Triple-A Louisville. Hays, who turns 30 on July 5, got hurt when he fouled a pitch off his foot in the sixth inning of Wednesday's 3-2 loss at Kansas City. He missed the start of the season with a left calf strain and also spent time on the IL with a left hamstring strain. Hays signed a $5 million, one-year contract with the Reds in January. He is batting .303 with six homers and 25 RBIs in 31 games this season. Fraley, 30, got the start in right field for the series opener against Chicago. He had been sidelined by left calf tenderness. Richardson is replacing Luis Mey, who was sent down on Thursday. The 25-year-old Richardson is 0-1 with a 1.32 ERA in 10 games with the Reds this season. ___ AP MLB:
