Trial run begins at Kunnukuzhy abattoir, commissioning likely in first week of July

Thiruvananthapuram: After months of anticipation and delays, the trial run of the modern abattoir at Kunnukuzhy officially began on Monday. As much as 300kg of meat was used as part of the trial run. While the slaughterhouse is in operation mode, the rendering plant, responsible for converting by-products into biogas and managing waste, still awaits its dry run. According to the corporation, commissioning of the full facility was expected by the first week of July. Corporation secretary Jahamgeer S said that while the main facility's dry run was completed, the dry run of the rendering plant needs to be done this month itself. "We expect the commissioning of the abattoir by July first week if everything goes well," he said. Built at a cost of approximately Rs 10 crore by Kerala Electrical and Allied Engineering Ltd, the Kunnukuzhy complex is touted as one of the state's most advanced slaughterhouses. Its features include a biofilter system, an effluent treatment plant with 50 KLD capacity and refrigeration units for direct meat sales. Originally scheduled to be opened in April 2022, the project faced repeated delays due to design oversights, funding holdups and regulatory approvals, particularly from the Pollution Control Board. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The facility is equipped to slaughter between 50–75 large animals and 25–50 small ones per eight-hour shift, with an overall capacity to process 120 animals simultaneously. It includes livestock holding pens capable of sheltering up to 75 animals alongside emergency diesel backup, water storage and chilling rooms. A key sustainability measure is the integrated biogas plant, which could process up to 2,000 kg of waste daily. Additionally, the rendering unit is designed with odour-control systems to handle blood and offal, while waste sludge from the ETP is processed into manure or fish feed for sale. To manage upkeep, the corporation has floated an e-tender seeking experienced private operators. The partnership aims to streamline operations, with successful bidders expected to manage the facility under a 10-year contract, set to be awarded soon. The civic body has also pledged to clamp down on illegal slaughtering in city limits by registering butchers to use the new facility. Monitoring agencies note the rendering plant was delayed because of machinery bills pending approval by the Suchitwa Mission.

Sewage to resource: Muttathara plant gets a sustainable upgrade

Thiruvananthapuram: In a major step toward sustainable urban sanitation and resource recovery, the city corporation is set to implement Omniprocessor technology for the first time in Kerala at the Muttathara sewage treatment plant (STP). This pioneering project aims to treat accumulated sludge while producing clean water, electricity, and ash from sewage waste. A tripartite agreement was recently signed between the city corporation, Kerala Water Authority (KWA), and Ankur Scientific Private Ltd to execute the project. It is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, with Ankur Scientific providing technical support. The Omniprocessor system separates water vapour from solid waste. The solids are incinerated to produce energy, while the vapour is condensed into clean, potable water. Officials note that this self-sustaining process will significantly reduce sludge volume and generate reusable resources at the Muttathara facility. According to corporation secretary Jahamgeer S, the plant is expected to become operational within two months. "This is the best sludge treatment technology currently available in India. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Investire è più facile che mai BG SAXO Scopri di più Undo It not only tackles the waste problem but also converts it into valuable resources like water and electricity," he said. He added that this technology is essential for the complete removal of sludge waste at the plant. The project follows a techno-financial feasibility study conducted by a state govt-appointed committee in Oct last year. The Omniprocessor system is expected to significantly boost the city's ability to manage sewage waste in an efficient and environmentally friendly manner. KWA has floated an e-tender for the second time to select a private partner for a proposed tertiary treatment plant at the same site. The earlier tender did not receive any qualified bids. Two companies participated in the tender floated in April, and the new bids will be opened on June 21. Selection will follow a detailed technical and financial evaluation. Tertiary treatment is the final stage of wastewater processing and uses advanced methods like filtration, adsorption and disinfection to remove remaining contaminants. "We need a firm with proven expertise in tertiary treatment," a KWA official said, noting that the treated water will be suitable for non-potable uses like irrigation and industrial applications. The Rs 17-crore project includes Rs 2 crore for an overhead tank. Once complete, it will be the first such facility in the state and is expected to pave the way for large-scale wastewater reuse in the capital. The tertiary plant is expected to be operational in 18 months. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Corp seeks Kudumbashree aid for public toilet upkeep

T'puram: In a major step towards improving urban sanitation, the city corporation approached the Kudumbashree Mission to take over the operation and maintenance of all public toilets in the city, excluding those run by Sulabh. The move comes in response to growing concerns over hygiene standards and public dissatisfaction, especially after the city scored zero in public toilet cleanliness in the Swachh Survekshan Survey 2023 conducted by the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs. The civic body officially requested Kudumbashree to submit a detailed proposal for year-round maintenance of the city's 46 public toilets. The decision follows the successful operation of seven toilet kiosks at Manaveeyam Veedhi by Kudumbashree workers. These facilities remained closed for over a year before being reopened recently and managed efficiently by Kudumbashree. "The cleanliness and discipline shown by Kudumbashree team at Manaveeyam Veedhi convinced us of their ability to handle the city's toilet infrastructure. We want to replicate this model city-wide," corporation secretary Jahamgeer S said. In a recent meeting between the corporation secretary and the Kudumbashree executive director, the two sides began discussions on a comprehensive strategy to ensure maintenance, hygiene, and long-term viability of public toilets. A detailed proposal is expected to be submitted shortly. Kudumbashree Mission officials welcomed the move and expressed their readiness to take up the challenge. "We see this as a crucial step toward inclusive urban development and improving the quality of life for all residents, especially women and the elderly. Our teams are trained, committed, and ready to work with the corporation to bring sustainable change," a senior Kudumbashree official said. Most public toilets in the city remained shut after private contractors abandoned their operation, citing a lack of revenue and poor usage. Although there are also public restrooms available in petrol stations and other outlets, the overall availability and upkeep have remained grossly inadequate. Under the Smart City initiative, six public toilets were upgraded recently. These include facilities at the corporation campus, Putharikandam Maidanam, Thampanoor KSRTC outgate and ingate, and Vanchiyoor. These upgraded toilets are being viewed as benchmarks for cleanliness and accessibility. Despite these improvements, the corporation acknowledged significant gaps in toilet infrastructure. The state govt also initiated a statewide hygiene survey of public toilets, signalling a broader and more coordinated approach to sanitation across Kerala.

Two new multi-level car parking facilities set to open in Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram: The state capital is poised to alleviate its chronic parking woes as two major multi-level car parking (MLCP) facilities will be officially opened soon, while groundwork for a third MLCP is underway. The MLCP at Govt Medical College Hospital (MCH) is slated to open this month. Constructed at a cost of Rs 16.58 crore under the Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Ltd (SCTL), the facility can accommodate approximately 202 cars. It aims to streamline parking for the bustling MCH campus, which also includes Regional Cancer Centre and SAT Hospital. Simultaneously, MLCP at Putharikandam Maidan is expected to be operational by mid-July. This Rs 20 crore project will offer parking for both four-wheelers and two-wheelers. The proposed MLCP at Vaniyamkulam, near Aryasala, has progressed to the land-clearing stage, with piling works set to commence soon. This facility is designed to accommodate trucks on the ground floor and will include commercial spaces, addressing the area's specific commercial needs. All three projects are being executed under the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) model, ensuring comprehensive design, supply, installation and maintenance of automated systems. "The completion of these MLCPs marks a significant step towards resolving the city's parking challenges," said corporation secretary Jahamgeer S. "We will enhance urban mobility and ensure that our infrastructure keeps pace with the city's growth," he added. A senior official from SCTL added, "These facilities are not just about parking; they are about reimagining urban spaces to be more efficient and user-friendly. The integration of automated systems will set a new standard for parking solutions in the city." Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Eid wishes , messages , and quotes !

Kunnukuzhy abattoir's trial run to begin on June 5

T'puram: The trial run for the abattoir at Kunnukuzhy in the state capital is set to begin on June 5. The official commissioning of the project will also take place in June. According to corporation secretary, Jahamgeer S, all works related to the abattoir have been completed and only minor works are pending at the bio-filter component. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "We have decided to start a trial run on June 5. The abattoir will be fully operational in June itself after an inauguration," he said. Kerala Electrical and Allied Engineering Company is entrusted with the construction. Major infrastructure components, including the slaughterhouse and the biofilter system, have already been completed. Additionally, the corporation plans to establish a cold storage outlet on the premises to provide fresh meat directly to the public. Estimated at Rs 10 crore, the slaughterhouse was originally slated for completion in April 2022. Despite being handed over to KEL to accelerate construction, delays persisted, primarily due to design flaws and issues with the effluent treatment plant proposed by the Suchitwa Mission. Last year, corporation allocated Rs 73 lakh from its plan fund to revive the project. The biofilter component alone, critical for waste management, was awarded to MR Farms at a cost of Rs 2.49 crore. Opposition parties had earlier alleged that the work on the state-of-the-art abattoir project got delayed inordinately due to the corporation's lapses in disbursing funds to contractors in time. Once operational, Kunnukuzhy abattoir will have the capacity to process 120 animals simultaneously using modern waste disposal systems.
