Residents plan protest against privatisation of public healthcare in Mumbai M East ward
Mumbai: Amid growing opposition to the privatisation of public healthcare in Mumbai's M East ward, residents gathered with health activists and union members on Wednesday to plan their way out of it. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The community meeting, which drew residents from neighbourhoods like Sathe Nagar, Baiganwadi, and Buddha Nagar in Mankhurd and Govandi, concluded with plans to mobilise around 200 people to protest at the ward office and meet M East Ward officials by the end of the month. Jyoti Chavan, from Baiganwadi, said her grandmother was moved from Shatabdi Hospital to Rajawadi after a stroke because Shatabdi's ICU was shut. "Shatabdi is the closest to me, why do I need to run from one hospital to the other?" she asked. Others, like Buddha Nagar's Lila Sable, said that public hospitals, despite their issues, are the only affordable option for most. BMC decided to go ahead with a public-private partnership (PPP) model in M East Ward, even after scrapping similar plans elsewhere due to pressure from Union minister Piyush Goyal. The plan covers two new hospitals: a 580-bed teaching hospital on the Shatabdi campus and the 410-bed Lallubhai Compound Hospital. Of the latter, only 150 beds will remain under BMC control. There have been insufficient bidders so far to move ahead with the process. These facilities were promised as fully public services to the ward's 8 lakh residents, who have an average monthly income of Rs 7,800. Sanjana Athavle from Mumbai Mahapalika Nurses Union said, "We were promised multi-specialty public care. Instead, it's going the way of Seven Hills Hospital, where the municipal part has almost disappeared." Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Health advocacy group Jan Swasthya Abhiyan (JSA) has joined in the agitation. "In the 20 projects involving private players, we've seen consistent breakdowns in service," said JSA co-convenor Dr Abhay Shukla. Activists from Jan Haq Sangharsh Samiti and Revolutionary Workers Party of India are now working to form a broader coalition to demand the scrapping of PPP, filled vacancies in existing hospitals, and adequate medicine stocks. There will be a larger public hearing with the residents where further grievances will be taken into consideration. Samajwadi Party's Mumbai and state president, MLA Abu Azmi, who represents Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar, earlier told TOI, "We support the PPP initiative. Bringing private partnership will help run the hospital efficiently; they know how to manage large facilities. The existing BMC or govt hospitals are frequently in a bad state."

Shell projects steady LNG demand growth in Southeast Asia until 2035
KUALA LUMPUR: The demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Southeast Asia (SEA), particularly Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines and Thailand, is expected to grow steadily from now until 2035, said Shell chief executive officer Wael Sawan. He said the surge in energy demand, driven by the growth of data centres and artificial intelligence, can be met with LNG as a reliable energy source, especially in times of geopolitical uncertainty. "We see LNG demand to grow at around three per cent per year, and gas at around 0.8 per cent per year, so, indeed, LNG is going to be the critical fuel in the coming years," Sawan said in a dialogue session titled 'Role of Gas and LNG in Asia's Multi-Dimensional Energy Transition' at Energy Asia 2025 here today. Citing the International Energy Agency, he said gas production in SEA is expected to decline by about 20 per cent and the shortfall will likely need to be filled with LNG, given that much of the region's existing infrastructure is already gas-based. He also reaffirmed Shell's commitment to the energy transition, noting that the company has allocated approximately US$20 billion in capital expenditure for its low-carbon solutions portfolio. Meanwhile, JERA Co Inc (JERA) global chief executive officer and chair Yukio Kani said that several potential sites in Tokyo Bay, Japan, have already been identified for carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiatives. He added that Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and JERA have already announced a joint study focused on cross-border CCS. "JERA has four LNG tunnels and 16 gas-fired thermal power plants within the Tokyo Bay, and our offshore wind power will start its operation around 2030," he said. Last year, Petronas, through its subsidiary Petronas CCS Solutions Sdn Bhd, has signed a Joint Study Agreement (JSA) with JERA to evaluate the feasibility of the entire CCS value chain, including separation and capture of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emitted by JERA in Japan, cross-border transportation, and CO₂ storage in Malaysia. The agreement will strengthen the collaboration and contribute towards building a global network for cross-border CO₂ transport and storage. The JSA represents a notable stride forward in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Asia-Pacific region, especially in Malaysia and Japan.

Japan Shogi Association's Queen's Gambit for the future of female pro players
Critics claim it's an unfair advantage, but it's one step closer to equality for Japan's top women players in a male-dominated world. Shogi is often described as being the Japanese equivalent of chess, and there are certainly some similarities between the two, but the rules are distinct with a completely different set of strategies. ▼ Most sets also require being able to read some kanji to know what the pieces are. Much like chess, there is also a professional league, in which players compete for different titles through tournaments, like Meijin and Osho. Tomoka Nishiyama, holder of three women's titles, recently underwent the Professional Admissions Test to join the non-gendered general pro league only to fail at the final hurdle. Going into her final match against a professional league player with a score of two wins to two losses, and despite using the strong opening strategy she is known for, she was unable to clinch that last much-needed victory, thus failing to enter the ranks of general league professional players. Sadly, unlike pro-wrestling, your opponent is unlikely to just sit there and wait for you to unleash your signature move. ▼ 'Come. Do your worst.' Since the women's league and the general league operate under different systems, had Nishiyama been fortunate to win the match, it would have made her the first-ever female professional shogi player, as well as the sixth person to pass the Professional Admissions Test since its inception. With only four players passing the test in the last twenty years, it's not a simple feat to achieve. Not only do you need to have a track record of excellent results in tournaments against professionals just to be eligible for the test, you also need to achieve three wins in a series of games against players who have newly advanced to the ranks of professionals, after which you are given the rank of fourth dan and become a pro shogi player yourself. However, most pros follow the standard method of joining the Japan Shogi Association's Apprentice School, known as Shoreikai. Apprentices can gradually advance through the ranks through years of intense practice and competitions, living and breathing shogi and rising from first dan to second, third, and onward, unless they fail to reach fourth dan by the age of 26, in which case they face automatic expulsion. There is also the slim chance for special admission to the professional league by the JSA in very extraordinary cases, but examples of this are exceedingly rare. For pro women players, a new route to the general professional league just opened up. On June 6, the recently-elected first female JSA president in history, Ichiyo Shimizu, announced that should a player win the women's league title of Hakurei five times in total, she will earn the honorary lifetime title of Queen Hakurei, and be granted the right to enter the Free Class of professional shogi players, bypassing the test and giving them a clear path to the general ranked league. Tomoka Nishiyama, having won the title three times out of a total of four, is poised to be the first potential Queen Hakurei and first female professional shogi player in the general league. The entry point for holders of the Queen Hakurei title is shared by those who pass the Professional Admissions test: the Free Class. It is a non-league category for pro players, who are subject to a minimum number of games that must be played each year, although they have more freedom to decline matches than regular pros. It's also where demoted players from the regular league end up until they requalify. Of course, when the status quo is challenged, there will be blustering naysayers jumping out of the woodwork, and online reactions to the Queen Hakurei system haven't been entirely positive. However, with two of the strongest female players attempting a test that only a handful of men have passed since it began, and Nishiyama's challenge almost succeeding, it demonstrates that the world of women's shogi is not without talent. Perhaps with an extra route open to tread, we will soon see the first female pro player in the general league who will go on to inspire a future generation of young girls, ultimately injecting the sport with a swath of new talent.
