Political parties, traders slam US travel advisory

Ranchi: A US travel advisory cautioning its citizens from visiting India, citing concerns over sexual assaults and Maoist activities in six states, including Jharkhand, has met with strong criticism from political spheres and business communities in the state. JMM general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya said, "The US must review its action before commenting against other activities have been curbed and peace restored in Jharkhand. So I don't see any point in issuing such an advisory." Congress state general secretary Rajesh Gupta said, "The US is terrified of India's growth. Many Indian students are often bullied and murdered in US. They must correct themselves first before commenting on others. Jharkhand has always been very welcoming to its guests. If they don't want to visit Jharkhand, it's their call." The general secretary of the Federation of Jharkhand Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FJCCI), Paresh Gattani, said, "It is beyond my comprehension as to why the US govt issued such an advisory for Jharkhand. JMM likely to go it alone in Bihar Assembly polls

Days after the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) was left out of two INDIA bloc meetings held recently to discuss seat-sharing for the upcoming Bihar Assembly polls, the party has decided to go it alone. Party spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya has exuded confidence in the JMM's ability to hold its own in the polls and stressed that it has its own identity. The party has also expressed dissatisfaction with the INDI alliance's preparation for the polls, which are due later this year. The JMM has already identified 12 seats where it wants to field its candidates in Bihar Assembly polls. Police to seek Google help for traffic updates What's worse than being stuck in a traffic snarl while heading for work or running late for a class? Luckily, some relief is in the offing. The Ranchi Police is set to have an audience with Google India on how to keep the public updated about the latest traffic and road conditions. All congestion points, road blockades and disturbances will be depicted on Google Maps to warn the motorists beforehand and avoid further snarl-ups. This is not the first initiative by cops to ease traffic woes. The Ranchi traffic police have also issued helpline numbers that commuters can call up or message to highlight the cause of snarl-ups across the city. Now, cough up Rs 1,000 if found smoking in public Have you non-smokers ever found yourself enjoying a pleasant day out when the acrid whiff of cigarette smoke spoilt your mood? Well, worry not. President Droupadi Murmu recently gave her assent to an amendment Bill passed four years ago in the Jharkhand Assembly, enhancing the fine for smoking cigarettes at a public place from a measly Rs 200 to Rs 1,000. The fivefold rise in the penalty is likely to deter even the most notorious public smokers. Notably, just a month before the Bill was passed, the state Cabinet had also cleared a proposal to ban hookah bars. The government had clarified that violators would face jail or a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh.

JMM slams Modi's 11-year tenure, says India's global image has weakened

Ranchi (Jharkhand) [India], June 10 (ANI): The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the Narendra Modi-led government, alleging that the last 11 years of his leadership have seen '111 failures' that have pushed the country backwards. The party claimed that India's diplomatic standing has deteriorated. Addressing a press conference, JMM General Secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya said, 'Modiji has spent crores of rupees on his abroad trips and even after Pahalgam Attacks only Israel stood with us while everyone else did not take our side. The US President claims to ensure a ceasefire between India and Pakistan while the BJP is taking about nationalism. Where are the four militants who executed the Pahalgam incident?' Bhattacharya also took a jibe at India's global positioning, claiming the country now needs to 'give an application' to be invited to the upcoming G7 summit in Canada. On the domestic front, the JMM leader raised concerns over inflation, unemployment, and what he alleged was the misuse of institutions. 'Before 2014, MSMEs contributed 16 per cent to the GDP. Today, it's barely 7 per cent --the sector is nearly dead. The BJP had promised two crore jobs, but jobs were taken away.' He also rejected Union Minister Smriti Irani's claims that the last 11 years were focused on the welfare of the poor and women empowerment. 'The BJP claims that 25 crore people have been lifted from poverty but they are one who are providing foodgrains to 80 crore prices were Rs 28,000 per 10 grams in 2014 which has now increased to Rs 98,000 while the price of one dollar has increased from Rs 60 to 90,' he said. The JMM also questioned the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. 'Even the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya has been constructed on orders of the Supreme Court and that too 12 kilometres away from where Ram Lalla was originally placed... the Ram Mandir has been constructed on orders of the Supreme Court and that too 12 kilometres away from where Ram Lalla was originally placed,' he said. The remarks come as the BJP marks 11 years of Narendra Modi's leadership. PM Modi assumed office on May 26, 2014, and was sworn in for a third consecutive term on June 9, 2024. Earlier, BJP leader Smriti Irani told ANI, '11 years of good governance were dedicated to the welfare of the poor, welfare of agriculture, and women empowerment. BJP workers, with a happy heart, heartily express their gratitude towards PM Narendra Modi... In the democratic history of our country, PM Narendra Modi has worked for the welfare of the country via various schemes... We pray for his strong leadership to continue...' (ANI)

'World now knows the truth': Shashi Tharoor-led delegation on Operation Sindoor wraps up US visit

The all-party delegation on Operation Sindoor, led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, wrapped up the last leg of its multi-nation tour in the United States after meeting Vice President JD Vance and Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau. The delegation arrived in the US on June 3 for a three-day visit. It held meetings on Capitol Hill and in Washington and briefed American officials and leaders about India's Operation Sindoor and the nation's stance on cross-border terrorism. Before the US, the Tharoor-led delegation visited Panama, Guyana, Colombia, and Brazil. The group includes Sarfaraz Ahmad (JMM), Tejasvi Surya (BJP), Gants Harish Madhur Balayogi (TDP), Shashank Mani Tripathi (BJP), Bhubaneswar Kalita (BJP), Milind Deora (Shiv Sena), and India's former Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Sandhu. In a post on X late on Sunday, Shashi Tharoor wrote in Hindi, "If you are born a hundred times, you will do it a hundred times; I will love my country with all my heart; Whatever we could do, we did it "A Watan"; The whole world now knows the truth." "On behalf of all the member, I express gratitude to the motherland and the lovers of India in the country and abroad who listened with open ears and accepted with open heart that we are lovers of non-violence but only until Hind!" he added. The Tharoor-led group met Vice President Vance, Landau, House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC) leadership, India Caucus leadership and Senate Foreign Relations Committee leaders. The meeting with Vance, which was held at the White House for about 25 minutes on Thursday, was described as an excellent meeting" by Shashi Tharoor. He said that Vance was "warm and welcoming and receptive". 'Vance expressed complete understanding, first of all, outrage of what happened in Pahalgam and support and respect for India's restrained response in Operation Sindoor,' Tharoor told news agency PTI after the meeting. Following the delegation's meeting with Landau on Friday, State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said in a statement that the Deputy Secretary of State "reaffirmed the United States' strong support of India in the fight against terrorism and the strategic partnership between the two countries". 'We discussed the US-India strategic relationship, including expanding trade and commercial ties to foster growth and prosperity for both countries,' Landau said. The Indian Embassy said in a statement that during the meeting with Landau, the Tharoor-led delegation explained to him India's stance against terrorism, with Operation Sindoor being launched in response to the brutal April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. On its last day of the scheduled meetings, the delegation also paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at this statue outside the Indian Embassy in Washington. Afterwards, Tharoor posted on X, "It is striking how many world capitals are adorned with statues or busts of the Mahatma, the 20th century's greatest apostle of peace, nonviolence, and human freedom." The Indian government launched the initiative of sending seven delegations, with members cutting across party lines, to travel to 32 countries and the EU headquarters in Brussels. The goal of this global outreach program is to put forth India's resolve to tackle terrorism against the backdrop of Operation Sindoor. The Indian armed forces launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 and carried out targeted strikes at nine terror infrastructures linked to outfits such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, etc., in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation was launched in response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Baisaran near Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which killed 26 people, mostly tourists. During Operation Sindoor, more than 100 terrorists were killed. Following Operation Sindoor, Pakistan attempted to launch a retaliatory military action, with cross-border shelling, unarmed aerial vehicles, and drones across J&K, and border regions. However, most of these attacks were thwarted by the Indian armed forces and the nation's air defence system. After four days of intense cross-border fighting, India and Pakistan reached a ceasefire understanding on May 10.
