Govt schools embrace yoga through Olympiad initiative
Ranchi: Govt school students are now learning yoga through the Yoga Olympiad initiated by the Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC), embedding yoga into their daily lives. The initiative aims to promote holistic well-being among school children by encouraging the regular practice of yoga and making it an integral part of school life. As part of the programme, selected participants from the Yogamay Jharkhand Olympiad are receiving specialised yoga training from May 29 to June 12. The trained students will represent Jharkhand at the National Yoga Olympiad, scheduled to be held from June 15 to 18 in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu. To institutionalise yoga activities and ensure their continuity, the education department has directed the formation of yoga clubs in all govt and aided schools. These clubs will be constituted on June 12, said officials. One of the key highlights of the campaign will be the mass Surya Namaskar event which will be held across the state on June 11. From 7:15 am to 8:00 am, students across govt and govt-aided schools will participate simultaneously in performing Surya Namaskar. During this time, students will also practice a standardised 32-posture yoga protocol, helping them to improve flexibility, focus, and overall well-being. Further promoting the integration of yoga into school life, the education department has announced yoga-based competitions on June 19 and 20 as part of the International Yoga Day celebrations. These competitions will be held at the school level and will include painting, essay writing, and quiz contests. School principals will be responsible for ensuring the successful organisation of these events and for encouraging student participation. To ensure sustained engagement with yoga, the programme also includes provisions for weekly yoga practice sessions to be held every Wednesday and Saturday in all schools. In addition, a monthly yoga competition will be organised on the last Saturday of each month, providing students with a platform to showcase their skills and deepen their practice. Teachers trained to tackle drug abuse
Ranchi: The Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC) on Friday conducted an annual district-level training programme aimed at sensitising high-school teachers about drug abuse and equipping them with tools to identify and prevent substance use among students. The training focused on the need to address not only tobacco use but also the exposure of adolescents to stimulants, depressants, opioids, and hallucinogens. Friday's session is part of the department's ongoing efforts to prepare action plan to curb drugs among students. Pankaj Kumar, assistant district project officer said, "This time, we've broadened our scope to include other harmful substances beyond tobacco." Sushant Kumar, consultant, district tobacco control cell, spoke on the root causes of drug abuse, which include curiosity, peer pressure, stress, trauma, family environment, and media influence. Sushant said, "Drug abuse often begins at home when children observe substance use among elders. Schools must step in to break this chain." The training also covered early indicators of drug use, such as sudden behavioural changes, falling academic performance, a shift in peer groups, and noticeable physical symptoms. Teachers were educated on relevant legal frameworks, including Section 6 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act and Juvenile Justice Act, the officials added. Showcause to 38 schools over results
Ranchi: In view of the poor performance in CBSE Class XII examinations 2025 under the Mukhyamantri Utkrishta Vidyalaya scheme, the Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC) has issued showcause notices to several CM Schools of Excellence. These schools recorded pass percentages below 60%. In the Science stream, 19 schools were flagged, including institutions in Lohardaga, Giridih, Chatra, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Ramgarh, Dumka, Latehar, Seraikela, Godda, Jamtara, Koderma, Garhwa, Chaibasa, and Sahibganj. Among these, the KGBV CM School of Excellence, Sahibganj, showed the poorest result with only 11.49% of students passing. Ten of these schools recorded pass rates under 50%. In the Commerce stream, 10 schools were identified for poor performance, with CD Girls CM Excellence School, Jhumri Tilaiya, Koderma recording the lowest pass rate of 8.33%. Six of these institutions scored below 50%. Additionally, nine schools offering Arts courses, including those in Seraikela, Godda, Dumka, Sahibganj, and Palamu, were also directed to explain their performance. JEPC has asked all identified schools to submit replies in seven working days, read an official notice.

Schools of excellence to hire retd principals of pvt schools
Ranchi: The state department of school education and literacy has begun appointing retired principals and vice-principals of reputed private and central schools as managers in its CM Schools of Excellence statewide. The move, officials said, is aimed at strengthening the administrative efficiency of the schools. To be hired on contractual basis, retired principals and vice principals from CBSE-affiliated private schools will be given priority in the recruitment process. In addition, former principals and vice principals from Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas, as well as retired officers of the Army who held a minimum rank of Captain and hold experience in the education sector, can apply. The department has asked Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC) to initiate the recruitment process for 67 managers for a one-year term, subjected to be extended for up to two more years. Of them, 21 posts are unreserved while the rest is reserved for scheduled tribes , scheduled castes, backward classes and economically weaker sections. They will be paid 60,000 a month, the department said. Administrative officer at JEPC, S D Tigga, said, "This initiative is a step toward bringing experienced academic leadership into our schools of excellence. By these appointments, we aim to strengthen school administration and ensure adherence to CBSE standards. Their experience will add immense value in areas of discipline, daily operations, and academic performance."

Three-day tech quest concludes in Gumla
Gumla: A three-day Gumla Tech Quest concluded on Sunday in Gumla district on the occasion of the National Technology Day , which is celebrated to commemorate the successful Pokhran Nuclear Test —Operation Shakti — on May 11 programmes including a workshop was held at the district science centre (DSC) on the theme of 'use of technology, science, and innovation in education' as part of the programme, which was organised by the district administration along with the Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC) to sensitise students and public at large on significance of science and technology. "The event began with a workshop for students of the CM School of Excellence, focusing on the use of technology, science, and innovation in education," said Dildar Singh, assistant nodal officer of the Gift of Education initiative run by the students were also introduced to robotics, 3D printing, and various scientific exhibits during the fest.
