Friends Go Out for one bottle of Wine—Then Discover $2,000 Charge
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A night out in Hull, England, took an unexpected, and wildly expensive, turn after a woman was accidentally charged more than £1,600 ($2,226) for a single bottle of wine at a local pub. William Finch, 22, shared the video of the shocking moment they got the check on TikTok in a video that has now been viewed more than 890,000 times. Finch's cousin, 23-year-old Izzy, paid for the bottle of wine, which should have cost around £16, and instead set her back a staggering £1653.52. In a now-viral TikTok video, filmed at the Beech Tree in Hull, Izzy, Finch and the rest of the family are visibly stunned by the receipt which shows she paid the full amount using Apple Pay. "She was just like, 'Oh my God. 16—,' and then said '£1600.' We were all like, oh my God," Finch told Newsweek. "She's one of those people who doesn't really check what it says... she's like, 'Oh yeah, just tap tap,' like it's free money," he joked. But what she wasn't expecting was to pay more than 100 times what the modestly priced wine should have cost. Pictures from the video that gained viral attention after the expensive bottle of wine. "The guy doing the refund was actually laughing," Finch said. A spokesperson for The Beech Tree told Newsweek: "Unfortunately we made an initial mistake, but it was immediately recognized, and the issue was resolved. Sometimes mistakes happen but it was taken in good spirits and the customer was refunded and all was well." Finch originally shared the clip as "just a funny post" but it quickly exploded online, amassing more than 890,000 views since being shared last week. "I uploaded it and lost connection, then later I looked at my phone like, 'oh my God!'" he said. Online speculation about how the error happened flooded the comments. Some suggested it was a typo, others assumed a pin number had been accidentally entered as a price. But William confirmed the payment was made via Apple Pay—ruling out keypad errors. Apple's digital wallet service, Apple Pay, allows users to make payments in shops and online using their Apple device. Apple does not set a fixed limit for in-store or online purchases with Apple Pay. While most U.S. merchants do not impose a specific cap on contactless payments in stores and online, there can be caps placed by banks of financial institutions. Apple Cash and person-to-person payments have different limits. The maximum balance for Apple Cash is $20,000, while the maximum you can send or receive in a 7-day period is $10,000. In October 2024, Apple started to require identity verification for users sending more than $500 in total Apple Cash peer-to-peer transactions in line with anti-money laundering compliance. "People have so many theories. Once it's on the internet, everyone has an opinion," Finch said. While the woman's reaction—and the five-figure mistake—had social media users in stitches, the incident also served as a humorous reminder about checking your totals before tapping your card.

Harrowing details of mum, 32, found dead and 'strangled to death' in family home
Mum-of-two Isobella Knight, 32, was found dead at her semi-detached home after allegedly being strangled to death. Her husband has been charged with murder A mum-of-two has tragically died after she was allegedly strangled to death. On Friday, June 13, at about 3.30pm, police were initially called to reports of a crash involving a man in a blue Skoda at a McDonald's restaurant in Folley Way, Burton Latimer. Officers then raced to find Isobella Knight, 32, deceased at her semi-detached house in Burton Latimer, Northamptonshire. A post-mortem examination revealed that Isobella, known as Izzy, died from pressure being applied to her neck. Her husband, Paul Knight, 35, appeared at Northampton Crown Court and has been charged with her murder. Tributes flooded in for the gifted artist and devout churchgoer. Her family remembered the 32-year-old as the "kind, gentle and much-loved" mother who would "always put her two little girls before anything else". In a touching eulogy, her mum, Helena, said she was "the perfect child". She shared: "I know it's a cliché to say she was a model child, but she really was. "She made it so easy to be a mum and her good nature was something that would never leave her." Helena also said: "One of the standout memories I have of her as a little girl is her teddy bear – 'Teddy', which she used to carry around with her everywhere she went. "When her sister Georgina was born, they developed an immediate bond. They used to make me laugh because they were so different but they got on like a house on fire." Heartbreakingly, she added: "They had a beautiful bond as sisters, and there are so many stories I could tell about them both. "To have to tell my daughter that her older sister had died, especially in these circumstances, was so painful. "There really aren't any words to describe the hurt." Helena ended the tribute with: "I want everyone to know that Izzy was so much more than a victim. She was a loving mother, a treasured daughter, a best friend in sister form, a talented artist, and a great friend. "She laughed, she cried, she worked tirelessly to provide for her children, she had dreams, and she loved hard. "She was such a lovely woman and I already miss her so much. She will never ever be forgotten and we will make sure her girls grow up knowing what an incredible person she was." Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Torie Harrison commented: "Our thoughts and condolences are with Izzy's family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. She was a much-loved daughter, sister and mother and the devastation caused by her death is immeasurable. "Our team continue to work at pace to ensure her loved ones have the answers they need, and to secure justice for Izzy."

Tributes pour in for mum found strangled after husband charged with her murder
A popular mum who was found dead in her home has been remembered as 'beautiful inside and out'. Artist Isobella Knight, 32, was discovered by police at her semi-detached home in Burton Latimer, Northamptonshire, on Friday. Izzy's family have penned poignant tributes to the 'kind, gentle and much-loved' mum who put her two little girls before anything else.' Her mum, Helena, said: 'She made it so easy to be a mum, and her good nature was something that would never leave her. 'As Izzy grew up, she became a beautiful, gentle, quietly confident young woman who loved getting up early and seizing the day, had a strong network of friends, and gave birth to two girls who became her world. 'If anyone was born to be a mum, it was Izzy. She would go without to give her two girls the best possible life, and she took them to so many clubs and classes, including gymnastics, swimming, drama and dance.' Izzy worked as an artist after studying Fine Art at the University of Hertfordshire and ran her own portrait business. Her mum added: 'She never had a bad word to say about anyone – she was truly beautiful inside and out, and she wouldn't hurt a fly. 'I want everyone to know that Izzy was so much more than a victim. She was a loving mother, a treasured daughter, a best friend in sister form, a talented artist, and a great friend.'
