Iranian missile strikes hospital, prompting Israeli threat of retaliation

BEERSHEBA, Israel — An Iranian missile hit one of Israel's largest hospitals on Thursday, damaging the facility, causing minor injuries and prompting vows of retribution from Israeli officials as they continued a week-long bombing campaign against Iran. The missile struck the surgery department of the Soroka Medical Center in the southern city of Beersheba shortly after 7 a.m. local time. The blast sparked a fire in the building and shattered windows across the hospital complex.

Why US Bunker-Busting Bombs Are Key to Israel's Iran Goals

In launching their military offensive against Iran, Israeli officials have said their goal is to neutralize the country's ability to develop nuclear weapons. It's widely thought that to truly cripple Iran's capacity to produce fuel for such weapons, Israel would require the help of its chief ally, the US. That's because the US has something Israel does not: a so-called bunker-busting bomb potentially powerful enough to destroy Iran's most fortified uranium enrichment facility, the Fordow plant. At the heart of Iran's nuclear program are two main facilities for producing enriched uranium, which can be used to fuel a nuclear bomb when processed to contain a high percentage of uranium-235 isotopes to support a fission chain reaction. Both facilities, Natanz and Fordow, were designed to have at least some resilience to military attacks.

Trump eyeing conflict with Iran

US President Donald Trump is considering involving the US directly in the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, Axios has reported, citing three anonymous officials familiar with the situation. The US president left the G7 summit early on Monday and is scheduled to meet with his national security team on Tuesday. Trump has lauded the Israeli bombing campaign against Iran's nuclear facilities, but has so far held off on taking part in offensive operations. 'Trump was seriously considering joining the war and launching a US strike against Iran's nuclear facilities, especially its underground uranium enrichment facility in Fordow,' Axios wrote. West Jerusalem believes that the US will 'enter the war in the coming days,' the outlet said, citing Israeli officials. While a potential intervention will be discussed at Tuesday's meeting, there are differences of opinion among Trump's closes advisers, CBS News wrote, citing five sources familiar with the matter. US forces deployed in the region have the bunker-buster bombs Israeli lacks that could destroy Iran's uranium enrichment plant at Fordow, Axios wrote on Sunday. There is no indication that the facility, built deep inside a mountain, has been damaged, according to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Rafael Grossi. According to Israeli National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi, the campaign against Iran 'will not end without damaging the Fordow nuclear facility.' Israel is in constant communication with Washington on the matter, he said in an interview on Tuesday. A few hours prior to Tuesday's security meeting, Trump delivered a chain of posts on Truth Social, claiming that the US now has unobstructed primacy in Iranian airspace, boasting that he could assassinate Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and demanding that Tehran capitulates.

Trump eyeing intervention in conflict against Iran

President Donald Trump is seriously considering getting the US directly involved in Israel's conflict with Iran as he meets with his national security team on Tuesday, multiple media outlets have reported. The president has lauded the Israeli bombing campaign against Iran's nuclear facilities but has so far held off on joining offensive operations, opting instead to use US military assets to help West Jerusalem shoot down Iranian missiles and drones. Ahead of a national security meeting in the White House Situation Room to discuss the escalating Middle East conflict, Trump was considering entering the US into the fray, Axios and CBS news wrote on Tuesday. 'Trump was seriously considering joining the war and launching a US strike against Iran's nuclear facilities, especially its underground uranium enrichment facility in Fordow,' Axios wrote, citing three anonymous officials. West Jerusalem believes the US will 'enter the war in the coming days,' the outlet said, citing Israeli officials. The decision will be discussed at Tuesday's meeting, but there is no full agreement among Trump's closes advisers, CBS News wrote, citing fire sources familiar with the matter. Fordow, a heavily fortified uranium enrichment plant built deep inside a mountain, has been hit with Israeli airstrikes, but there is no indication that it's underground section sustained significant damage, according to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Rafael Grossi. The Jewish state lacks the bunker-buster bombs needed to fully destroy the entrenched facility, but US forces deployed in the region do, Axios wrote on Sunday. According to National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi, the Israeli campaign against Iran 'will not end without damaging the Fordow nuclear facility.' While it is unclear 'if the US will join,' Israel is in constant communication with Washington on the matter, he said in an interview on Tuesday. A few hours prior to Tuesday's security meeting, Trump delivered a chain of militant posts on Truth Social, claiming that the US now had unobstructed primacy in Iranian airspace, boasting that he could assassinate Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and demanding that Tehran capitulate.
