Foreign minister to represent Malaysia at OIC summit, highlight Palestine and religious hatred
PUTRAJAYA, June 20 — Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan will lead Malaysia's delegation to the 51st Session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting in Istanbul, Turkiye, from June 21 to 22, 2025. The Foreign Ministry, in a statement released yesterday, said that the meeting will involve the participation of foreign ministers and representatives from 57 OIC Member States. 'The Foreign Minister will deliver a National Statement highlighting Malaysia's views and position on issues of common concern under the OIC, such as the situation in Palestine and their rights to self-determination,' said the ministry. The National Statement will also address the rise of Islamophobia and all forms of hatred towards religion, emphasise economic cooperation, and initiatives that Malaysia has undertaken in pursuing the objectives of the OIC, it added. With the theme of 'OIC in a Transforming World', this meeting is expected to deliberate and agree on common approaches for addressing the political, socio-economic, and cultural challenges faced by the Ummah, through the adoption of the Istanbul Declaration and nearly 146 proposed resolutions, the ministry stated. The meeting also serves as a platform to expand cooperation and solidarity among OIC Member States in promoting peace and security for the Ummah and the global community at large, particularly amid the current escalating tensions in the Middle East region, it said. — Bernama

NYC's Muslim mayoral candidate gets car bomb threat, despite not owning a vehicle
New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani's office said Thursday that the New York City Police Department (NYPD) hate crime unit is investigating a car bomb threat made against him, despite not owning a car. "After multiple death threats and racist messages, Assembly Mamdani's office is participating in an ongoing investigation by the NYPD's Hate Crimes Task Force," a statement from the mayoral candidate's office read. "While Zohran does not own a car, the violent and specific language of what appears to be a repeat caller is alarming and we are taking every precaution. "While this is a sad reality, it is not surprising after millions of dollars have been spent on dehumanizing, Islamophobic rhetoric designed to stoke division and hate," the statement continued. "Violence and racism should have no place in our politics. Zohran remains focused on delivering a safe and affordable New York." Mamdani, who is vying to be New York City's first Muslim mayor, has been criticized by his competitors, including former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, for his views on Middle East politics, which reached a boiling point this week amid ongoing strikes between Israel and Iran. During a recent mayoral debate, Mamdani said, "Israel has a right to exist." But Mamdani refused to agree that Israel has the right to exist as a "Jewish state" but rather "as a state with equal rights." Fox News Digital has reached out to the NYPD regarding the car bomb threat investigation. Despite differing political views, Cuomo condemned the threats made against his political opponent. "This is an atrocious threat of political violence against Mr. Mamdani. It is unacceptable —I strongly condemn these threats and any others like them," Cuomo said on X. "This has no place in our politics or our society. Thankfully, no one was harmed. This is a pivotal time in this country, and we need to tone down the rhetoric and focus on the people's agenda." Another Democratic mayoral candidate, New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, also condemned the threats against Mamdani."The hideous threats of Islamophobic violence against [Zohran Mamdani] are dangerous and morally reprehensible," Lander said. "I condemn this behavior to the fullest extent. Hate has no place in New York City." Lander was arrested earlier this week by the Department of Homeland Security after allegedly assaulting a federal officer.

GOP lawmaker says he was ‘run off the road' by man with Palestinian flag
Rep. Max Miller said on Thursday that he was 'run off the road' by an aggressor with a Palestinian flag in his home state of Ohio, drawing condemnations from across the aisle. The Ohio Republican recounted the incident in a post to his account on X on Thursday afternoon, saying that a driver ran his car off the road and threatened the congressmember and his family, before he 'proceeded to show a Palestinian flag' and drove away. 'The deranged hatred in this country has gotten out of control. Today I was run off the road in Rocky River, and the life of me and my family was threatened by a person who proceeded to show a Palestinian flag before taking off,' Miller wrote in the post, saying that he had filed a police report with both the Capitol Police and the local Ohio station. 'We know who this person is and he will face justice,' Miller added but did not identify the alleged assailant. Miller, who is Jewish and is a self-described 'staunch defender of Israel,' decried the incident as an act of antisemitism. 'We will not hide,' Miller said in a video appended to the post. 'And I will continue to fight against antisemitism, Islamophobia and all other forms of hate.' The incident comes as tensions run high amid an increasing number of politically motivated attacks across the political spectrum. Just last weekend, two Democratic Minnesota state lawmakers and their spouses were shot in their homes, leaving two dead and two seriously injured. House Democratic leadership was quick to denounce the incident, tying it to a 'rise in political violence' in the country. 'We condemn in the strongest possible terms the attack on Congressman Max Miller and his family and are thankful they are safe,' the statement by Reps. Hakeem Jeffries, Katherine Clark and Pete Aguilar read. 'The rise in political violence in this country is unacceptable.'

Police Investigate Threats to Mamdani in Mayoral Race's Final Days
The New York Police Department is investigating threats against Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, one of the leading candidates in the city's Democratic mayoral primary. Andrew Epstein, a spokesman for Mr. Mamdani, said he was cooperating with the department's Hate Crimes Task Force after an unidentified man left a string of profane voice mail messages at his district office in recent weeks. One message left Wednesday morning threatened Mr. Mamdani, who is Muslim, and his family. The man called Mr. Mamdani a 'terrorist' who 'is not welcome in New York or America,' according to audio provided by the campaign. Although Mr. Mamdani does not own a car, the caller said he should be careful starting one. 'The violent and specific language of what appears to be a repeat caller is alarming and we are taking every precaution,' Mr. Epstein said in a written statement. 'While this is a sad reality, it is not surprising after millions of dollars have been spent on dehumanizing, Islamophobic rhetoric designed to stoke division and hate.' A police spokesman said there had been no arrests, but that an investigation was continuing. The threats came at a deadly moment for elected officials in the United States. Violence against politicians, judges and other government officials has skyrocketed in recent years. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
