UP man dies after ‘offering himself as ‘sacrifice', police probe

A police inquiry has been launched into the death of a 60-year-old man who allegedly died by suicide after slitting his throat with a knife on Bakrid on Saturday. Police said a suicide note was recovered in which the deceased, identified as Ish Mohammad, purportedly wrote that he was 'offering' himself as a 'sacrifice to the Almighty'. Additional Superintendent of Police (Deoria) Arvind Kumar Verma, said prima facie, it appeared the man took the extreme step on his own. According to police, they received information from the control room on Saturday that an elderly man at Udhopur village had allegedly slit his throat at his home after offering Eid namaz. He was immediately taken to a local hospital and later referred to Gorakhpur, where he died during treatment. Station House Officer (Gauri Bazaar police station) Nanda Prasad said that during inquiry, a suicide note was recovered from the house, which his family confirmed was written by him. 'In the note, he clearly stated that no one should be held responsible for his death, as he was taking the extreme step of his own will. He wrote that humans and animals are the same and that he was sacrificing himself and offering himself to Allah,' the SHO said. Ish Mohammad is survived by his wife and three sons.
