Inspirational runner wins Glasgow Men's 10K one year after stay in psychiatric ward
Just one year after being discharged from a psychiatric ward, 20-year-old fitness fanatic Harvey Mitchell-Divers has turned his life around to take gold in the city centre race. The inspirational winner of the Glasgow Men's Health 10K says the pursuit of greatness is the only high he needs after overcoming drug-induced psychosis. Just one year after being discharged from a psychiatric ward, 20-year-old fitness fanatic Harvey Mitchell-Divers has turned his life around to take gold in the city centre race - clocking up a personal best. The sport and exercise science student sprinted past 2448 athletes and runners to smash through the finish line in just 33 minutes and 27 seconds. Before falling ill, Harvey was named Scotland's youngest Iron Man after completing the gruelling challenge at 18, picked up a Guinness World Record after winning the world's highest endurance race in Abu Dhabi at just 16 and is a British World Age Group Champion. Commenting on his monumental win on Sunday, he told Lanarkshire Live: 'I'm still on a high from the weekend. It was a very good result, I'm over the moon. 'I was going for a personal best and I knew there was a serious stack of good athletes and runners so I wasn't expecting to get first place, it was a big surprise.' The remarkable feat was made all the more special being on Father's Day with his dad Jason - his biggest supporter - cheering him on. Emotions were high as Harvey reflected on his incredible comeback following the darkest time in his life. He said: 'I had nearly a whole year off of racing. After Iron Man in July 2023 I began to replace one high of exercise with another high of taking a lot of drugs. 'I was going to lots of raves and taking ecstasy and eventually I became really unwell. 'The amount I was training coupled with the amount of drugs I was taking didn't really balance very well and I ended up with drug-induced psychosis.' The East Kilbride chef was admitted to hospital in November of that year for 10 days diagnosed with acute stress syndrome. But over Christmas Harvey continued to struggle with his mental health, becoming more and more introverted and feeling down and depressed with high anxiety. 'It's not like me at all to be introverted', he added. 'I could hardly even get out my car to go into a shop. I also had really bad voices in my head - I was in a really dark place for a good while. 'There was a series of events then I was admitted to hospital just before my 19th birthday.' Harvey was transferred to Ward 20 - the psychiatric unit at Hairmyres Hospital - in February 2024 and spent three months there trying to make sense of what was going on in his mind. 'My behaviour was out of the ordinary, I was just really struggling and wasn't myself - I was a completely different version of myself', he continued. 'Drug-induced psychosis is a really really horrible thing where you feel like you're losing your mind. I was under supervision all day because I kept trying to run away because I was adamant there was nothing wrong with me. 'I put on a substantial amount of weight - around 16kg (two-and-a-half stone) - from not training but I was put on medication which really helped and I started to come round.' It took two months before Harvey realised himself how ill he was and accepted the fact he was in the right place to get help. Praising the medics who cared for him, Harvey said he can't thank the staff enough for helping him to get better. He said: 'I had to almost rebuild my life from scratch. When I came out I didn't have a job, I was overweight, I had lost all my fitness and wasn't anywhere near the person that I used to be. It was a total identity change. 'It was so difficult to build my fitness back up. I remember going for a run with my mate and having to stop multiple times, I was gassed. 'But slowly over time I rebuilt myself. I turned up every day and put in the graft and managed to lose all the weight and start competing again.' Now back to full fitness, the Glasgow Men's Health 10k was the obstacle course runner's first win in over 18 months and his first ever first place in a running race. He said: 'I've done a few events since being back but that was my first breakthrough win which felt really nice. I was leading from the front from about 1km in and then I had a good lead while passing George Square and about 30 seconds on the second place. I knew I had to hold it coming into Glasgow Green. 'It was also the first race my girlfriend, Elizabeth Boyle, had ever been to so it was nice to get the win. 'And of course it was Father's Day so that was really special with my dad there. He works off-shore so can't get to a lot of races but he's my number one fan so it was so good to celebrate with him, he just loved it.' Touching on his love for competing and chasing his dreams, Harvey shared his ambition to go into coaching following graduation and help others achieve their fitness goals. He added: 'I just love the constant pursuit of being better than what I was yesterday. I love constantly striving to be better and trying to improve myself - it gives me such mental clarity. "After everything I've been through running just takes my mind off things and given me a sense of purpose and direction. I just love the constant push to be better. 'Drugs really aren't worth it. Running is a much better high than anything you can ever take. 'You can't quite beat putting hours worth of graft into something, chasing your dreams, doing the things you love doing and getting the most out of life. 'Hopefully I can inspire a few people along the way to do the same, that's what it's all about for me. Life's been mad recently and I'm just getting warmed up.' THE first half of the new Marvel Studios miniseries Ironheart premieres on June 24 on Disney+. Actress Dominique Thorne reprises her role as Riri Williams (Ironheart), a genius teenaged innovator who created an advanced suit of armour, rivalling the one built by Tony Stark (Iron Man). First introduced in 2022's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the six-episode series is set to take place following the film's events, diving into the character's background, upbringing and determination to make a mark on the world. The show will also introduce Parker Robbins aka The Hood (Anthony Ramos), an ally of Riri's who wears a hood that allows him to tap into dark arts and magic. In an interview, Dominique explained how her character differs from Tony Stark's, despite following his steps in terms of innovation and intelligence. The beloved character who kick-started the Marvel cinematic universe (MCU) back in 2008 with the titular film had the resources and foundation which Riri does not have, leaving her fully dependent on herself and giving her different challenges to overcome. 'She does not have a billion dollars at her disposal. She does not have the resources... she doesn't have the mentorship, or the guidance,' Dominique said. 'And so what does it look like for someone like The Hood to enter her sphere now, where she is vulnerable and reflecting? It does set the stage for a very interesting journey ahead to see the people who pop up as she's working to get those answers and what the scale of their influence can be, if any?' she added. Ironheart is overall MCU'S 14th television project and is set to be the last series and conclusion of the Phase Five group of films and shows, which includes Ant-Man (2023) and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) and Marvel's latest release Thunderbolts* this year.

The film stars Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Florence Pugh as Yelena, Wyatt Russell as John Walker, David Harbour as Red Guardian and Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost. Together the group of reluctant superheroes face off against "The Void" (Lewis Pullman). "Everyone here has done bad things. You can't escape the past," Yelena says in the trailer. The film follows them as they step in for the absent Avengers and redeem themselves. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Geraldine Viswanathan and Olga Kurylenko also star. Thunderbolts becomes available for digital purchase July 1 and arrives on Blu-ray July 29. The movie opened in theaters May 2. Robert Downey Jr. surprised fellow MCU stars with a sweet message on GMA. "Iron Man loves Ironheart," Downey Jr. said. "This goes so deep," Dominique Thorne Downey Jr. has welcomed fellow Marvel stars Dominique Thorne and Anthony Ramos into the permanent MCU family with an iron-clad embrace. The longtime Iron Man and Avengers franchise actor — who will return to the MCU as Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday — surprised the Ironheart TV series actors with a sweet message of support during a live interview on Tuesday on Good Morning America. "Do you mind if we interrupt the interview for just a moment, because I think we have a very special message. I think you're going to recognize who this is," Robin Roberts said, before the show cut to a clip as Thorne and Ramos watched. "Ms. Thorne, I couldn't be happier than to be seeing you bring Riri Williams to life," Downey Jr. said in the pre-recorded message, before turning his focus to Ramos' upcoming role as the mysterious Hood in the Black Panther offshoot. "But, the Hood has me nervous. Is the hood green? Please tell me Mr. Ramos is not replacing me as Dr. Doom via Parker Robbins. Is there something they're not telling me?" The Oscar winner finished the video by making a heart with his fingers, telling the pair, "Long story short, Iron Man loves Ironheart." Back in the GMA studio, Thorne flashed the same symbol with her hands as she said, "Ironheart loves Iron Man too." She added that Downey Jr. "has been so supportive" throughout the making of the Ryan Coogler-produced Ironheart series, which follows her as Williams, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever's visionary inventor, who returns to Chicago to attend MIT — where she crosses paths with "The Hood" and ultimately constructs an iron suit to establish herself as the titular hero. Earlier this week, Entertainment Weekly debuted a first-look image of RuPaul's Drag Race icon Shea Couleé in her MCU debut as Slug, a mysterious character she says might harbor a secret identity. "From my understanding, this version of Slug they're presenting is someone who's being referred to as a code name. I don't want to give too much of their backstory away. They need an alternative code name to go by because there could or could not be some people looking for them," Shea teases in an interview, while confirming that the character's history as a drag queen will be seen in flashbacks throughout the new premieres June 24 on Disney+. "He told me how excited he was and that he's rooting for it, too. I literally got two thumbs up. It's really reassuring to know you're not embarrassing Iron Man." In fact, recently Thorne hinted that she might be running into Downey as Doctor Doom in either "Avengers: Doomsday" or the follow-up "Avengers: Secret Wars". She stopped short of confirming it, but asked about appearing in the films, Thorne said, "Oh, you know, what can I say? The odds might be in our favor. Who knows? We'll see. We'll see." Thorne made her debut as Riri Williams/Ironheart in 2022's "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever". Williams becomes a central figure in the conflict between Wakanda and Talokan when she develops a device that can detect vibranium. Her upcoming series takes place after the events of that film, when Williams returns home to Chicago to find the mystical threat of Parker Robbins/The Hood (Anthony Ramos) waiting for her.
