Iraq handball team to hold Sulaymaniyah camp for World Cup qualifiers and Islamic Games prep
Baghdad ( – The Iraqi national men's handball team will hold an internal training camp in Sulaymaniyah, starting June 20, 2025, as part of its preparations for the upcoming Islamic Solidarity Games and World Cup qualifiers. Kadhim Kamel, a member of the Iraqi Handball Federation, stated that the camp will be crucial for head coach Goran Petković to select the final core squad for these major international tournaments. He noted that the recent participation in the Arab Cup in Kuwait was a useful and important experience that gave the Croatian coach a clear understanding of the players' levels. Following the Arab Cup, an extensive technical meeting was held, chaired by Federation President Ahmed Riad, where a comprehensive preparation program for the upcoming championships was presented. The Arab Cup served as the initial testing ground for players selected from the domestic league. The Sulaymaniyah camp marks the next phase in this strategy, aiming to refine the squad and ensure Iraq is ready to compete effectively for positive results.

Iraq handball team arrives in Kuwait for Arab Championship
Kuwait City ( – The Iraqi national men's handball team arrived in Kuwait on Sunday (May 4, 2025) ahead of the 10th Arab Men's Handball Championship, which kicks off today, Monday, May 5th, and runs until May 11th. The team traveled overland from Basra after concluding a 12-day training camp under Croatian head coach Goran Petković, who deemed the preparation 'ideal.' This followed an earlier camp in Sulaymaniyah. Iraq faces a significant challenge in the nine-nation tournament, having been drawn into a tough Group 1 alongside regional powerhouses Egypt and Bahrain – dubbed a group of death by Iraqi Handball Federation President Ahmed Riad. Coach Petković acknowledged the strength of their opponents but expressed confidence in his players' ability to compete and gain valuable experience. Iraq begins their campaign against Bahrain today (Monday, May 5th), followed by a clash with Egypt on Tuesday (May 6th). While aiming for positive results in Kuwait, Petković emphasized the tournament serves as crucial preparation for the ultimate goal: the Asian Qualifiers for the World Cup, starting early next year.

Our national handball team participates in the Arab Championship in Kuwait
Baghdad - INA The Iraqi Handball Federation announced today, Thursday, the participation of our national team in the 10th Arab Cup, scheduled to be held in Kuwait from May 4 to 12. A statement from the Federation, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), stated that "our national handball team will participate in the 10th edition of the Arab Championship, scheduled to be held in Kuwait from May 4 to 12." The statement explained that "the date coincides with the International Handball Federation Week." Our national team recently concluded a five-day training camp in Najaf Governorate, under the supervision of Croatian coach Berkovic.
