Old Station Craft Meats a popular stop for Father's Day grilling
WAUKEE, Iowa — Father's Day weekend is not only bringing the heat with the weather, but also from the grill. Old Station Craft Meats in Waukee has been embracing the rush of customers. 'It's a busy weekend for us for sure. We're just trying to make sure that we're well stocked on all of our cuts. We sell a lot of beef for Father's Day,' owner of Old Station Craft Meats Nick Lenters said. There's few betters ways to celebrate a father, grandfather or father figure than grilling out. Whether you like beef, pork, chicken or something more unique, they've got it. But there's one clear favorite this weekend. Off the Cuff and dancing like no one's watching 'A lot of times this is the area that people are looking at when they're thinking about that steak for dad. We've got dry aged ribeyes, regular ribeyes, tomahawk steaks. We can cut a thick T-bone or a porter house for dad,' Lenters added. He and his brother Adam grew up on a farm with livestock, so now with the store, they want to make sure to source from local farmers as much as possible. 'I think what's special about our meat is that we're trying to get it either local or we're looking for the best quality meat,' he said. 'We have good relationships with our partners, whether it be Upper Iowa Beef in Lime Springs, Iowa or Berkwood Farms here in Des Moines.' They don't just sell meat at the store, they also want to teach their customers how to prepare and cook their meats as well. 'First and foremost is understanding where the meat that you're going to cook comes from off of the carcass, because depending on where it comes from, you're going to use a different cooking,' Lenters said. 'All of us back here have a passion for grilling and smoking. We've got all kinds of ideas for you.' Old Station Craft Meats is open Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. – 6 p.m., Saturday 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m., and closed Sunday. Des Moines closing splash pads, some pools to reduce water consumption
DES MOINES, Iowa — The City of Des Moines announced Friday afternoon that it will be temporarily closing its splash pads and some pools to reduce water consumption. The announcement comes after Central Iowa Water Works implemented a first-ever ban on lawn watering Thursday to reduce the strain on water treatment facilities to remove near-record levels of nitrates in the Des Moines and Racoon rivers. However, four of the city's pools and aquatic centers will remain open. Those locations include the Ashworth Swimming Pool, the Nahas Family Aquatic Center, the Northwest Family Aquatic Center, and the Teachout Family Aquatic Center. Birdland pool remains closed as the city works to install a new filter. According to CIWW, the lawn watering ban will be in effect for the foreseeable future until nitrate levels in the rivers decrease. As of Thursday, the nitrate levels in the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers were 17.3 mg/L and 15.4 mg/L, respectively. The last time nitrate levels in the rivers were that high was in 2013, when they reached over 14 mg/L in the Des Moines and 24 mg/L in the Raccoon. Former Ankeny teacher sentenced to prison for sexually exploiting student
DES MOINES, Iowa — A former Ankeny teacher was sentenced to prison on Thursday for sexually exploiting a student. In late January 2024, an investigation began into 35-year-old Rachel Elizabeth Whiteside, a former Ankeny middle school teacher and softball coach, when the Ankeny Police Department was notified by the school district about a teacher having an inappropriate relationship with a former student. According to the Polk County Attorney's Office, the victim reported that while she was a student at an Ankeny middle school in 2015, Whiteside began grooming and sexually assaulting her, and that the abuse spanned seven years. Des Moines man identified as body found in Newton home during search warrant execution Roughly a month after the APD received the tip, Whiteside was arrested and charged with multiple felonies, including four counts of sexual exploitation by a school employee. The attorney's office said Whiteside pled guilty to the four counts of sexual exploitation by a school employee charge. On Thursday, a Polk County Judge sentenced Whiteside to consecutive five-year sentences for each charge, meaning she will serve the sentences one after the other for up to 20 years in prison. Whiteside will also be supervised by the Department of Corrections for 10 years and will be listed on the sex offender registry.
