70% degree seats remain unfilled after 2nd phase DOST counselling
Hyderabad: Not even 30% of the 3.71 lakh degree seats in the state have been filled after the second phase of Degree Online Services, Telangana (DOST). According to the details released by the Telangana Council of Higher Education (TGCHE) on Friday, 43,568 students were allotted seats in the second phase of counselling. Of these, 6,077 had got seats in the first phase but participated again in the counselling to secure a seat in a better college. In the first phase, 60,436 students were allotted seats. "There is hardly any demand for degree courses. Maybe, if DOST counselling was held after EAPCET and after release of Intermediate supplementary results, a few more seats would be filled," said Y Ramakrishna, secretary, Telangana Degree College Managements Association. He said that there were way too many seats in undergraduate courses in degree colleges across the state. He also advocated stringent eligibility criteria for professional courses such as engineering to ensure students don't opt for them as the default choice irrespective of their capability to study. In Telangana, there are 805 degree colleges under DOST which offer 457 courses. TGCHE officials said they would be opening up degree courses to non-local students after the third phase of counselling. "We went ahead with DOST counselling as there are students who want to join only degree courses. We did not want to keep them waiting. If needed, we will have special phase counselling for supplementary students and those waiting for EAPCET," said V Balakista Reddy, DOST convenor and chairman, TGCHE. He said they were trying to reform degree education by updating the syllabus and introducing skill-based courses, but it would take a few years to see the results. Poverty should not hinder education: Andhra HRD Minister Lokesh at Shining Stars Award event
PARVATHIPURAM-MANYAM: 'We have introduced several educational reforms to make government schools compete with private institutions. I hope we will get good results in the coming four years with these reforms. You should work hard and focus on your studies. The government will take care of the rest of things,' said HRD and IT Minister Nara Lokesh, while presenting Shining Star Awards to SSC and Intermediate toppers at a programme held here on Monday. In all, 95 SSC and 26 Intermediate toppers of government schools and junior colleges received the awards at the programme. Interacting with students, Lokesh highlighted the initiatives taken by the NDA government to improve educational standards in schools. Lokesh took note of the opinions expressed by students at 'Dream Wall', 'Ambition Wall' and 'Gratitude Wall' arranged at the venue. District Incharge Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu, Minister for Women and Child Welfare Gummadi Sandhyarani, Government Whip T Jagadeeswari, Collector A Shyam Prasad, MLAs, MLCs and others participated in the programme.

‘Thalliki Vandanam' scheme will be implemented from this academic year, says Social Welfare Minister
Social Welfare Minister Dola Sri Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy, who is also the in-charge Minister for the Visakhapatnam district, has said that the benefits of the much-awaited 'Thalliki Vandanam' scheme will be distributed to the beneficiaries within a week. He took part in the 'Shining Stars' awards' presentation ceremony at the B.R. Ambedkar Assembly hall on the Andhra University campus here on Monday. The State government has announced the awards to the toppers in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Intermediate annual examinations for the year 2024-25. A total of 121 students, including 83 SSC toppers and 38 Intermediate toppers (six students from each mandal) from across the district, were presented with the awards by the guests. Each winner was presented a cash prize of ₹20,000 in the form of a cheque. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Swamy said that the State government will launch the 'Thalliki Vandanam' scheme this academic year and the amount will be transferred directly to the beneficiaries' accounts within a week. So, students and parents need not worry about it. He said that from this academic year, welfare students of Gurukul schools will be given coaching on IIT and NEET. He urged students to participate in the International Yoga Day celebrations to be held in the city on June 21, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the chief guest. District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad has said that Visakhapatnam students will always be at the top in education and other aspects. He has urged students to stay away from cellphones and IPL cricket matches during their student life for a better career. Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat, Government Whip P.G.V.R. Naidu (Ganababu) and others participated. The awardees and their parents expressed happiness on the initiative taken by the government to encourage students.

‘Shining Stars' awards to SSC, Inter merit students
Guntur: The State government decided to give Shining Stars awards to the students, who secured highest marks in SSC and Intermediate public examinations. The award will be given to the merit students studied in government and private schools during the academic year 2024-25. The government directed the officials to select the students mandal wise and give the Shining Stars Award. The school education secretary Kona Sasidhar issued orders to this effect on Friday. The aim of the government is to improve the quality of education and standards. The government instructed the officials to give awards on June 9 at all the district headquarters. In every mandal, awards will be given to six students, who secured highest marks in the SSC. The officials will select two OC students, two BC students, one SC, one ST students. Similarly, Shining Star awards will be given to 36 Intermediate students for the district. Intermediate students belonging to OC, BC, SC, ST, Minority who scored more than 830 marks will get awards. The selected SSC and Intermediate students will be given Rs 20,000 cash incentive, medal and certificate as a token of appreciation. They will be felicitated.

AP govt expands ‘Shining Star' awards to district & mandal levels
Vijayawada: After felicitating the state level rankers in both SSC and Intermediate, HRD minister Nara Lokesh has directed the education department to take up similar programmes at district and mandal level to encourage the meritorious students. He asked the officials to felicitate top rankers in SSC and intermediate examinations with shining star awards. Education secretary Kona Sasidhar asked the officials to ready the awardees lists based on the merit. He asked them to consider those students who secured 500 marks and above out of 600 marks in SSC for selection in a particular mandal. While two students from OC will be picked up, one each from SC, ST, BC and minority sections will be selected for awards. As many six students will be selected in each mandal and also three toppers in Children With Special Needs (CWsN) will also be felicitated. The awardees will cover students from all managements both in govt and private. In Intermediate, the students who secured 830 and above marks shall be considered for selection in a particular district in the preceding academic year covering all managements. Each awardee will be felicitated with a certificate, medal and a cash award of Rs.20,000. In addition, three students will be given Shining Star Award for their highest score in the entire District. Each awardee will be felicitated with a certificate, medal and a cash award of Rs. 20,000. Similarly, 36 awardees will be selected from 26 districts in Intermediate education covering all managements both in govt / private junior colleges in the state from MPC, BIPC, HEC, CEC/MEC and vocational streams and in each stream consisting of SC, ST, Minority, BC, OC and children with special needs (CWsN) categories for felicitation. School education secretary Kona Sasidhar directed the director of govt examinations and Board of Intermediate Examinations to prepare the list of the students based on the merit secured in annual public examinations. In case where multiple students have secured the same marks and percentage as specified above, all such candidates shall be considered for the awards in their respective categories, said Sasidhar. "The students shall be selected for Shining Stars Award irrespective of the income ceiling limit. The receipt of the award amount need not be linked to other welfare scholarship amounts received by the candidate by virtue of their other social/physical disadvantages, as the main objective of the scheme is to recognize the merit and to encourage continuity in their education.
