Arab Parliament calls on Italy to recognise Palestinian state

Mohammed Bbin Ahmed Al Yamahi, President of the Arab Parliament, has called on the Republic of Italy to formally recognise the State of Palestine, stating that such a move would be a step in the right direction towards supporting security and stability in the region. Al Yamahi expressed hope that the Italian government would adopt policies and measures to exert pressure on Israel to halt its acts of genocide and starvation against the Palestinian people. His remarks came during a meeting with Lorenzo Fontana, President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, on the sidelines of the Arab Parliament's participation in the 2nd Parliamentary Conference on Interfaith Dialogue, organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in cooperation with the Italian Parliament. During the meeting, the President of the Arab Parliament discussed the escalating situation in the Middle East, stressing that the region is witnessing unprecedented tensions in light of the ongoing war between Iran and Israel. He emphasised that the region cannot withstand further escalation and that diplomatic solutions remain the only path to achieving lasting peace and stability. WAM

UAE made tolerance cornerstone of nation-building: FNC Speaker

Ghobash made the remarks during his address at the Second Parliamentary Conference on Interfaith Dialogue, currently held in Rome, co-organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Italian Parliament, with broad participation from parliamentary leaders, international organisations, faith-based institutions, and civil society representatives. Among the attendees were Tulia Ackson, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Speaker of the National Assembly of Tanzania; Lorenzo Fontana, President of the Chamber of Deputies of Italy, and Ignazio La Russa, President of the Senate of Italy. The UAE delegation included several FNC members. In his keynote, Ghobash spotlighted the Document on Human Fraternity, launched in Abu Dhabi in 2019 under the patronage of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, as a transformative milestone in interreligious and intercultural relations. 'This document was not merely a declaration of intent,' he said, 'but a moral and philosophical framework transcending religious faiths, establishing a new global ethic that elevates human dignity above all affiliations.' 'We gather today as representatives of our peoples, who, despite their different languages, cultures, and religious traditions, are united by enduring human values — values that safeguard dignity, belief, and the right to live in safety and peace,' Ghobash added. Ghobash also emphasised the symbolic importance of holding the conference in Rome, a city that has long served as a historic centre of human thought and civic development. 'Rome has, for centuries, embodied a dynamic civilisational path where nations interacted in the realms of philosophy, politics, law, citizenship, and pluralism.'

Morocco attends parliamentary conference on interfaith dialogue

The second Parliamentary Conference on Interfaith Dialogue opened Thursday in Rome under the theme «Building Trust and Inspiring Hope to Shape Our Common Future», with Morocco taking part. The Moroccan delegation, representing the House of Representatives within the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), is led by Ahmed Touizi of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM). It also includes Mustapha Raddad from the National Rally of Independents (RNI), Ahmed El Aaleme from the Istiqlalien Group of Unity and Egalitarianism, and Khaddouj Slassi from the Socialist Group (Ittihadi Opposition). The conference brings together parliamentary leaders and members, alongside representatives of various faiths, governments, UN bodies, international organizations, faith-based groups, civil society, and academic experts. This global forum builds on the momentum of the inaugural Parliamentary Conference on Interfaith Dialogue, held in June 2023 in Marrakech. That event culminated in the Marrakech Declaration, which underscored the importance of interfaith dialogue as a key tool for fostering inclusion, peaceful coexistence, and respect for the rule of law. The Rome conference—organized by the IPU and the Italian Parliament in partnership with Religions for Peace—features several thematic sessions. Participants will focus on implementing the main recommendations of the Marrakech Declaration and outlining strategies for future joint action.

Bahrain's Voice for Ethical AI Rings Loud in Romania

The King Hamad Global Centre for Coexistence and Tolerance took part in the 32nd General Assembly of the International Association of Orthodox Parliaments (IAO), held in Romania's capital, Bucharest, from June 2 to 6. The gathering focused on the vital theme: 'Collaboration between Parliaments and Religious Institutions in Shaping Guidelines for Artificial Intelligence Use – The Significance of the Marrakesh Declaration by the Inter-Parliamentary Union.' The event attracted prominent parliamentary and religious figures alongside representatives from various international organizations. During the plenary session, Ms. Noura Abdullah Al Mansouri, Director of Coexistence at the King Hamad Global Centre, highlighted the Kingdom of Bahrain's steadfast commitment to fostering international cooperation and partnerships among parliamentary, executive, and religious institutions. She emphasized Bahrain's proactive role in crafting just digital policies and establishing ethical frameworks to harness modern technologies and AI applications—aimed at building a world grounded in fairness, tolerance, democracy, and peaceful coexistence amid growing global challenges and risks. Ms. Al Mansouri also showcased the Centre's pioneering use of AI-powered educational tools within the 'Science Schools for Peace' initiative, launched in the sister Kingdom of Jordan. This project is a collaborative effort with the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the International Centre for Synchrotron-Light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME). Two innovative AI-driven programs, 'Smart Assistant 1' and 'Smart Participant 1,' were presented as cutting-edge solutions to support legislative and executive institutions in task management, data analysis, reporting, and decision-making. Reaffirming the Centre's dedication, Ms. Al Mansouri stressed its mission to promote intercultural dialogue and fortify the ethical infrastructure of digital policies that champion peace. She underscored the importance of safeguarding against AI misuse, including privacy violations and the spread of hate and intolerance. These efforts draw inspiration from the visionary guidance of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the call of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, who advocates for an international treaty to govern the responsible and ethical development of artificial intelligence—building trust, transparency, and shared human values worldwide.

UK Delegation Meets Morocco's FM Following Historic Backing of Autonomy Plan

Rabat – Moroccan Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita hosted in Rabat today members of the British parliamentary delegation, with the visit coming on the heels of a significant shift in the UK's position on the Western Sahara dispute. The delegation, representing the UK group at the Inter-Parliamentary Union and led by Fabian Hamilton, held talks with Bourita following British Foreign Secretary David Lammy's visit to Morocco on Sunday. During his visit, the UK's top diplomat officially announced his government's support for Morocco's autonomy initiative as the only credible basis for resolving the dispute over Western Sahara. Today's meeting reflects growing diplomatic momentum between the two countries, coming shortly after Lammy stated that the UK now considers Morocco's autonomy proposal 'serious and credible' and a viable solution to the decades-long dispute. Yesterday, Hamilton talked extensively to Moroccan media about the significance of the UK's recent decision to support Morocco's Autonomy plan. He pointed out a growing consensus among the world's top powers: 'We now have three out of the five permanent members of the Security Council supporting the autonomy plan.' Discussions reportedly focused on reinforcing legislative dialogue between Moroccan and British lawmakers, in line with broader efforts to deepen political, economic, and security collaboration. Observers view the visit as part of a broader British diplomatic push to connect with key partners in North Africa, particularly as London seeks to recalibrate its foreign policy post-Brexit. The UK's endorsement of the Moroccan plan represents a diplomatic win for Rabat, which has long lobbied international actors to support its autonomy initiative as a final settlement to the Western Sahara dispute. The British delegation's visit also signals a continuation of the strategic dialogue between the two countries, which have expanded cooperation in sectors ranging from trade and investment to education and renewable energy. As diplomatic activity intensifies, Morocco's foreign ministry has signaled that it expects further engagements with UK officials in the coming months.
