Quake sensing machine stolen
Rajkot: An earthquake sensing instrument, valued at Rs 11,000, was stolen from the earthquake research facility near Ishwariya Park along Jamnagar Road in Rajkot. A police complaint was filed stating that the instrument was stolen between March 4 and May 5. The police complaint was filed by Bihari Darji, a technical assistant employed at Arm Management Service, which holds a contract with the Institute of Seismological Research based in Raisan, Gandhinagar, to maintain and install new instruments. The equipment was the property of the institute. According to Darji's statement to police, he and his colleagues visited the earthquake research centre at Ishwariya Park, Rajkot, on March 4 to set up new equipment. They stored the old equipment at the facility with a guard present on the premises. When Darji returned with his senior officer, Dilipsinh Kushwaha, on May 5 for routine data collection and inspection, they discovered one of the old devices was missing. On questioning, the security guard claimed to have no information about the missing instrument. He believed that this old instrument was stolen and filed a police complaint.

3.4 magnitude earthquake hits Kutch, no damage reported
. NEW DELHI: A mild earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale struck Gujarat's Kutch district on Wednesday evening, according to the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR). A local disaster response official confirmed that there were no reports of injuries or damage to property, reported PTI. The earthquake was recorded at 6:55 pm, with its epicentre located 12 kilometres north-northeast of Bhachau in Kutch district, according to the Gandhinagar-based Institute of Seismological Research (ISR). Kutch district falls in a "very high risk" seismic zone, where low-intensity earthquakes are a frequent occurrence. The 2001 earthquake in the region was one of the strongest and deadliest India has seen in the past 200 years. It caused near-total destruction in many towns and villages, claimed around 13,800 lives, and injured over 1.67 lakh people.

No casualty or damage to property was reported due to it, a district disaster response official said. The 3.4 magnitude tremor was recorded at 6.55 pm with its epicentre 12 km north-north east (NNE) from Bhachau in the district, the Gandhinagar-based ISR said in its update. District authorities said no damage to property or life was reported. Kutch district is located in a 'very high risk' seismic zone, and earthquakes of lower intensity occur regularly there. The 2001 earthquake in the district was the third largest and second most destructive in India over the last two centuries. A large number of towns and villages in the district suffered almost complete destruction, killing around 13,800 people and leaving 1.67 lakh injured.

A tremor of 3.4 magnitude hit north Gujarat in the wee hours of Saturday (May 3, 2025), the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) stated. According to the district authorities, there was no report of casualty or property damage. The tremor, with its epicentre near Vav in Banaskantha district, was recorded at 3.35 am, the ISR said in its latest report. The Gandhinagar-based institute said the tremor was recorded around 27 km east-north-east (ENE) from Vav at a depth of 4.9 km. Gujarat is a high earthquake-risk area and has suffered nine major earthquakes in the past 200 years, according to the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA). The earthquake in Kutch on January 26, 2001, was the third largest and second most destructive in India over the last two centuries, according to the GSDMA. A large number of towns and villages in the district had suffered almost complete destruction in the earthquake, which killed nearly 13,800 persons and left 1.67 lakh others injured.
