Blumhouse Buys Rights to 'Saw' Franchise

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors Blumhouse already boasts its share of horror franchises like "Insidious" and "Five Nights at Freddy's", and now it will be adding "Saw" to its arsenal of scares. The company has acquired rights to all future "Saw" films, according to Variety. Read More: Jeremy Allen White Transforms Into Bruce Springsteen in Biopic First Look We don't know much Blumhouse paid for the rights, but we know they acquired them from producers Oren Koules and Mark Burg. Lionsgate will continue to have a 50% stake in the franchise. Still from "Saw". Still from "Saw". Lionsgate Fans may be enthused to hear the news, considering it means Blumhouse and Lionsgate have the motivation to release more installments. News broke in March that "Saw XI" had been removed from Lionsgate's list of upcoming releases, to be replaced with "The Strangers: Chapter 2". There was no word on exactly why "Saw XI" was canceled, but co-writer Patrick Melton told The Hollywood Reporter that if the film wasn't made, it would have nothing to do with the creative side of things. "Saw XI may or may not be made, but we have a very timely story in it, and I hope it gets made just because of that," Melton said. He put the blame for the delays at the "managerial level." Blumhouse's acquisition of the "Saw" franchise could be seen to represent a homecoming of sorts. It brings the franchise back to James Wan who directed the first entry in the series. James Wan's Atomic Monster merged with Blumhouse in 2024. Blumhouse CEO James Blum said Wan and "Saw" writer Leigh Whannell will be "brought back in the fold" and guiding future installments. 'Saw' holds a special place in my heart," Wan told Variety. "Coming back to this world with a fresh perspective is both thrilling and deeply personal." "For me, this will mark a significant creative return to the 'Saw' franchise for the first time since the early days, and I'm very much looking forward to embracing the original spirit whilst pushing the legacy forward in bold, unexpected ways." If past success proves to be an indicator of the franchise's future, financially, Blumhouse is likely in for a windfall. All told, the ten "Saw" films have taken in over $1 billion at the global box office. Blumhouse in Talks to Buy "Saw" Franchise from Twisted Pictures

Yara Sameh Blumhouse is in talks to acquire part of the long-running horror franchise 'Saw'. Blumhouse is in the midst of a deal to take over the ownership stake of Saw from Twisted Pictures, the banner run by Oren Koules and Mark Burg. Twisted co-owns the rights with Lionsgate, which has distributed the films since releasing the first film in 2004. If a deal is made, it would bring the franchise back into the hands of James Wan, the filmmaker who directed that movie and created the franchise with co-writer Leigh Whannell. Blumhouse, run by Jason Blum, merged with Wan's production banner, Atomic Monster, in early January 2024. The talks between Blumhouse and Twisted began last year but broke down earlier this year. A sale price was one of the big sticking points. Made for only $1.2 million, Saw became one of the most profitable horror movies of all time when it opened to $18.2 million domestically and earned $104 million worldwide. Home entertainment was equally massive (this was the DVD era, after all) and a franchise, that encompassed 10 movies as well as merchandising, video games, and more, followed. The last entry in the franchise, 'Saw X' was released in 2023 and earned $112.2 million worldwide. An 11th movie was in the works but stalled out. While it is unclear what the plans for any new stories would entail — more movies? a series? — but the deal is the latest in a growing number that have creatives or filmmakers own, partially or entirely, their creations. Koules and Burg reportedly financed most of Saw's budget after first seeing Wan and Whannel's short film. Wan, off the success of Saw, went on to create or co-create the Insidious horror franchise and The Conjuring horror universe. MOVIE REVIEW: We see if 'It Feeds' satisfies horror fans' taste buds

Little originality on show but still works. on its own merits - just. It Feeds stars Twilight's Ashley Greene as clairvoyant Cynthia who is forced into action to protect her daughter Jordan (Ellie O'Brien) and young stranger Riley (Shayelin Martin) from an evil entity. Writer-director Chad Archibald's ( Bite, The Heretics) horror film somehow gets away with sharing DNA with the likes of Insidious to still work on its own merits - just. ‌ Cynthia's personal experience of traumatic loss drives her decision-making and for much of the movie all that matters to her is Jordan's safety and avoiding confrontation. ‌ But Jordan leaps into action to help Riley, especially after engaging with Riley's aggressive, secretive dad Randall (Shawn Ashmore). O'Brien's infectious and endearing selflessness drives the flick and Jordan's fate quickly intertwines with Riley's. Greene and Ashmore actually starred together in 2021's decent but inexplicably long thriller Aftermath and do a good job here as the main adults on show. Greene's character is clearly torn between doing the right thing and her family's self-preservation and despite using increasingly extreme measures, all Ashmore's Randall is out to do is also protect his daughter. I could've done without Juno Rinaldi's kooky Agatha, who only seems to exist to give Cynthia and Jordan a helping hand when the plot requires it, and would like to have seen more of the always offbeat and fascinating presence of Julian Richings ( Dr Whittaker). ‌ I was also torn between thinking the climactic showdown sequence was cool or dumb. It's very Insidious, with characters entering a dark world through their minds, but the visuals are immersive and the environment threatening. Quite why everyone ends up wearing goth-like clothing and is styled with eye-opening hair and make-up is pretty bizarre, though. ‌ It Feeds won't win any points for originality, however, Archibald's latest horror dishes out just enough scares, meaningful motivations and stirring shots to satisfy genre fans' taste buds. ● Pop me an email at and I will pass on any movie or TV show recommendations you have to your fellow readers.
