National Weather Service warns of 'interesting' day with storms, hail, high winds ahead
Several rounds of thunderstorms will hit Indiana on June 18, the National Weather Service warns. The most intense storms are expected to occur between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. "This afternoon has the potential to be pretty interesting," NWS meteorologist Earl Breon said. Hail could be larger than an inch in some areas, and the chance of tornadoes can't be ruled out. All the rain this morning and later this afternoon could lead to river and flash flooding, Breon added, so drivers should be mindful of low crossings on their routes. There's potential for wind above 70 mph, which could also create a serious hazard for drivers. Storms will continue until about 10 p.m., according to early June 18 models. The morning of Juneteenth will break with more showers and thunderstorms before 8 a.m. There's a "slight" chance of showers between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. on June 19, and then the stormy weather will resume. This weekend is predicted to be simmering hot, with June 22, June 23 and June 24 expected to hit temperatures higher than 90 degrees. 🚨 Indiana Weather Alerts: Warnings, Watches and Advisories. ⚡ Indiana power outage map: How to check your status. 💻 Internet outages: How to track them. 🚫 What you should and shouldn't do when the power is out. 🐶 Your neighbor left their pet outside. Storms ahead for Indianapolis this week: read the latest NWS forecast
Storms will rumble through central Indiana beginning June 16, according to the National Weather Service's latest forecast. Isolated thunderstorms are possible every day until the morning of June 19, and the threat of severe weather is highest on June 18. "The main time frame we're concerned for is Wednesday, Wednesday night," said NWS meteorologist Andrew White. "The main line of storms is probably going to be as early as 3 p.m., but mainly in the 6 or 7 p.m. to midnight time frame." Flooding is the primary safety concern over the next days' storms, White said. That will be of particular concern to the areas that have already seen significant rainfall this month, like the stretch of land between Indianapolis' northern suburbs and Kokomo. Hail and strong winds could cause property damage, too. The tornado threat is "not very high" at this time, White said. The storms are expected to clear up by the evening of June 19. By June 20, skies will be sunny and hot - apt conditions for Saturday's summer solstice. Temperatures will peak in the 80s every day this week. That's temperate in comparison to next week, which could see head indices over 100 degrees, according to White. Warm, humid, rainy weather is in store for central Indiana through Thursday. There are daily chances for at least isolated thunderstorms with a slight chance of severe weather on Wednesday. #INwx 🌧️/⛈️ Monday: Rain before 2 p.m., then scattered showers and storms after 3 p.m. Winds light and variable with a high temperature of 83 degrees. ⛈️Monday night: Scattered showers and storms after 11 p.m. Light wind with a low temperature of 69 degrees. ⛈️/🌤️ Tuesday: Showers and thunderstorms before 2 p.m. Partly sunny with a high around 85 degrees. 🌧️/⛈️Tuesday night: A slight chance of showers before 8 p.m., and then a slight chance of showers and storms after 2 a.m. Temperatures will fall to about 71 degrees. ⛈️Wednesday: Showers likely and a thunderstorm possible after 2 p.m. Temperatures will reach as high as 87 degrees. National Weather Service predicts strong storms, days of rain ahead of mild race weekend
Strong thunderstorms are expected to hit Indianapolis during the afternoon and evening of May 20. The possibility of a tornado "cannot be ruled out," according to the National Weather Service. Rain showers will be constant through the afternoon. Isolated storms are possible before then, but forecasters don't expect widespread storms until about 4 p.m. High winds are the most pressing threat. Winds within storms could reach up to 50 mph, and gusts throughout the day will be more moderate, about 20 to 25 mph. Flooding and hail are also possible. Storms will end around 2 a.m. on May 21. Rain will continue to fall all day May 21 and May 22, but storms aren't predicted. Forecasters are keeping an especially close eye on the flooding risk because of the steady rain, according to NWS meteorologist Earl Breon. Drivers should be mindful of flooding risk along their commutes. "It's not uncommon for one place to get lighter amounts of precipitation and a place next door to experience flash flooding in a situation like this," Breon said. The sun will come back out on May 23. Race weekend so far looks calm and temperate, with only a 30% chance of rain on May 25. 🚨 Indiana Weather Alerts: Warnings, Watches and Advisories. ⚡ Indiana power outage map: How to check your status. 💻 Internet outages: How to track them.
