Pakistan says 14 militants killed in northwest as PM Sharif vows to root out extremist violence

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's security forces killed 14 militants this week in the country's volatile northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the military's media wing said on Wednesday, as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif pledged to completely eradicate militancy from the country. The operation comes amid a noticeable uptick in militant attacks in Pakistan, particularly in the border regions near Afghanistan. In recent weeks, Pakistani officials have increasingly blamed India for backing the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), an outlawed umbrella group of militant factions responsible for a majority of attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Islamabad refers to the TTP as Fitna Al-Khawarij, a term rooted in Islamic history that denotes an extremist sect that rebelled against legitimate authority and declared other Muslims as apostates. It also describes the group as an Indian proxy. 'On 2-3 June 2025, an intelligence-based operation was conducted by the security forces in general area Datta Khel, North Waziristan District, on reported presence of Khawarij belonging to Indian proxy, Fitna Al-Khawarij,' the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement. 'During the conduct of operation, own troops effectively engaged the Indian-sponsored Khawarij location, and after an intense exchange of fire, fourteen Indian-sponsored Khawarij were sent to hell,' it added. The ISPR said 'sanitization operations' were ongoing to clear the area of any remaining militants, reaffirming the military's commitment to 'wipe out the menace of Indian-sponsored terrorism from the country.' Prime Minister Sharif also praised the security forces for their 'professional excellence' in the North Waziristan operation, saying such efforts were critical to eliminating the threat posed by what he called enemies of humanity. 'We will crush the nefarious designs of these terrorists,' Sharif said in a statement issued by his office. 'With the professional capability of our security forces, we will uproot the monster of terrorism once and for all.' He said the government and the armed forces were fully committed to ensuring the complete elimination of militant violence from Pakistan.

Pakistani troops kill 14 militants in raid in northwest region near Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan's security forces raided a militant hideout and killed 14 insurgents during a shootout in the country's northwest, the military said Wednesday. The overnight raid was conducted on the reported presence of Pakistani Taliban belonging to an Indian proxy in North Waziristan, a district in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the military said in a statement. New Delhi did not immediately comment. Pakistan's military said sanitization operations are being conducted to eliminate Pakistani Taliban groups it says are sponsored by India. Pakistani authorities often accuse India of backing outlawed Baloch Liberation Army and Pakistani Taliban groups that commit violence in Pakistan. The accusations have intensified since May in the wake of heightened tensions between the nuclear-armed nations. There has been a cross-border escalation between the countries over the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir, which is divided between the two but sought in its entirety by each. The Pakistani Taliban, which calls itself Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP, has been emboldened since its allies, the Afghan Taliban, returned to power in 2021. Many TTP leaders and fighters have taken sanctuary in Afghanistan.

During the engagements, two soldiers embraced martyrdom while fighting bravely, the ISPR added. "On 17-18 May 2024, nine Khwarij belonging to Indian Proxy, Fitna Al Khwarij, were sent to hell in multiple engagements in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province," the ISPR said, referring to terrorists affiliated with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. "An intelligence based operation (IBO) was conducted by the Security Forces in Lakki Marwat District. During the conduct of operation, own troops effectively engaged the khwarij location and resultantly, five Indian sponsored khwarij were sent to hell," it said. In the second IBO in the Bannu district, two terrorists were "neutralized" by the security forces, the ISPR said, adding that terrorists ambushed a security forces convoy in the Mir Ali general area of North Waziristan, where "own troops responded effectively and sent to hell two Indian sponsored khwarij". However, during the intense fire exchange, "two brave sons of soil, Sepoy Farhad Ali Turi (age: 29 years, resident of District Kurram) and Lance Naik Sabir Afridi (age: 32 years, resident of District Kohat) having fought gallantly, paid the ultimate sacrifice and embraced shahadat", the ISPR stated. In a separate statement, the ISPR said that three terrorists, belonging to the outlawed Indian proxy, the so-called Baloch Liberation Front (BLF), were killed in separate engagements in Balochistan's Awaran and Kech districts on 17-18 May. According to the ISPR, an IBO was conducted in Gishkur general area of Awaran on the reported presence of terrorists. During the IBO, "own troops effectively engaged the terrorists' location and after an intense fire exchange, Indian sponsored Terrorist Younas was killed, while two Indian sponsored terrorists got injured," it said. In another engagement in the Turbat city of the Kech district, according to the ISPR, security forces "successfully neutralized two Indian sponsored terrorists". The slain terrorist were identified as terrorist ring leader Sabr Ullah and terrorist Amjad alias Bichoo. Weapons, ammunition and explosives were also recovered from the killed Indian-sponsored terrorists, who remained actively involved in multiple terrorist activities against the law enforcement agencies (LEAs) as well as target killing of innocent civilians, the statement said. It said that sanitisation operations were being conducted to eliminate any other terrorist found in those areas. "The security forces of Pakistan are determined to wipe out the menace of terrorism perpetrated by Indian proxies, and such sacrifices of our brave soldiers further strengthen our resolve." President Asif Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appreciated the security forces for different successful operations against Indian proxy terrorists in K-P and Balochistan, and paid rich tributes to two brave Jawans who embraced martyrdom during the operation in North Waziristan. In their separate statements, Zardari and Shehbaz reiterated the determination to continue action against terrorism till its complete eradication from the country. They said that the whole nation stood shoulder to shoulder with the security forces in the war against terrorism. "The valiant armed forces are carrying out successful operations to crush the Indian proxy Fitna al Khawarij," Zardari stated. "The whole nation stands with the security forces in the war against terrorism," he added. The president commended Lance Naik Sabir Afridi and Sepoy Farhad Ali Toori for their patriotism and courage. He prayed for the elevation of the rank of the martyrs in Jannah and the grant of patience to the bereaved families. While noting that Fitna al Khawarij was perpetrating terrorism and heinous activities in Pakistan with the support of India, Shehbaz appreciated the professional capabilities of the officers and personnel of security forces for eliminating Indian supported terrorists. He paid tribute to Sepoy Farhad Ali Toori and Lance Naik Sabir Afridi for embracing martyrdom for the country during an effective operation against Khawarij in North Waziristan. He said that the war against the menace of terrorism would continue till its complete elimination from the country. Shehbaz also commended the security forces for their professional expertise and timely action against Indian agenda. The Indian conspiracy of putting in danger the life and property of innocent and unarmed citizens in Balochistan by perpetrating terrorism had been exposed, he added. The prime minister said the whole nation was standing shoulder to shoulder with the armed forces with unwavering determination to defend the country. "We will foil the nefarious designs of India to undermine peace and security in Pakistan," he added. (WITH INPUT FROM APP)

Pakistan blames India after seven soldiers killed in Balochistan blast

Seven Pakistani army soldiers have been killed when their vehicle was targeted by an improvised explosive device in the southwestern province of Balochistan, Pakistan's military says, blaming India for the attack amid rising tensions. Pakistan's military said members of the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) armed group targeted the vehicle carrying the soldiers in the province bordering Iran and Afghanistan on Tuesday. It described the group as an 'Indian proxy', but it did not provide any evidence to support its claim. There was no immediate comment from New Delhi or the BLA. An unnamed senior local government official told the AFP news agency the vehicle that was hit was part of a convoy on its way to a security operation. He said five people were wounded and taken by helicopter to a military hospital in the provincial capital, Quetta. More than 200 people, mostly members of the security forces, have been killed in 2025 by armed groups in Balochistan and neighbouring Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, according to an AFP tally. Advertisement At least 31 people, many of them soldiers, were killed in March when the BLA hijacked a train carrying more than 400 passengers while travelling from Quetta to the northern city of Peshawar. The bombing of the military convoy was carried out amid heightened tensions between nuclear-armed Pakistan and India after a shooting attack in India-administered Kashmir's Pahalgam region on April 22 that killed 25 Indian tourists and one Nepalese citizen. India blamed Pakistan for backing the 'terrorist' group that carried out the attack, a charge Islamabad has denied. After the Pahalgam attack, India and Pakistan have taken a series of steps against each other with Pakistan warning that India may be preparing to launch military attacks.
