Bengaluru's auto drivers fined for fleecing, other violations
Bengaluru: Close on the heels of the ban on bike-taxi services, Bengalureans complained about rising incidents of "autocracy" with several incidents of autorickshaw drivers fleecing the commuters with faulty meters. Cracking the whip on such errant drivers, Bengaluru Traffic Police booked over 1,000 cases Saturday and collected Rs 4.9 lakh in fine from autorickshaws and other traffic violators in the west division. Based on the commuters' ordeal, TOI published a report on traffic violations in its June 20 edition. During the day-long drive against errant autorickshaw drivers in and around Majestic, Ananda Rao Circle, KSR Railway Station, MG Road, Church Street, Cubbon Park and surrounding areas, 180 cases were booked under various sections of the Indian Motor Vehicles (IMV) Act and fine worth Rs 89,700 was collected. The highest number of cases (84) was booked against auto drivers not wearing the khaki uniform, resulting in a fine of Rs 42,000. Similarly, 52 cases were booked against those demanding excess fare and Rs 21,600 was collected in fine. As many as 44 auto drivers were booked for refusing to go for hire and a fine worth Rs 21,600 was collected, according to BTP officials. Hence, we cracked down on them during the special drive in areas where there is large footfall of passengers," she explained. Apart from this, the BTP officials have also booked 216 cases of violation of parking rules and collected Rs 87,500 in fine from the offenders. Traffic cops in plainclothes hired autorickshaws to various destinations of the city from the Majestic area and the drivers were caught demanding money above the meter charge. "An auto ride between Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Metro Station in Majestic and Freedom Park would normally cost Rs 50. But Saturday, auto drivers charged Rs 75-100. Similarly, the RTO officials must also verify the authenticity of the meters in all autorickshaws," explained a senior traffic police inspector.

Karnataka police arrested driver for reckless driving, illegal window tint, and faulty number plate
MANIPAL: A case has been registered against the driver of a black car for reckless driving and using illegally tinted windows, following a police chase on Wednesday. Inspector Mahesh Prasad from the Manipal Police Station was on patrol duty when he noticed the vehicle near Tiger Circle. The car was fitted with fully tinted windows and was being driven in a rash manner, endangering two-wheelers and other road users. When the officer signalled the driver to stop, he ignored the warning and continued driving dangerously. Suspecting the vehicle could be carrying illegal or unauthorised items, the police attempted to give chase. However, the driver sped away and vanished after taking a sharp left turn at Syndicate Circle near MIT Junction. Further checks revealed that the vehicle had a faulty number plate. Manipal Police registered a case under Sections 281 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with relevant provisions of the Central Motor Vehicles (CMV) Act and the Indian Motor Vehicles (IMV) Act.

Bengaluru police crack down on drunk driving among school bus drivers, 58 booked, vehicles seized
In a major safety enforcement initiative, the Bengaluru Traffic Police conducted a special drive on Monday morning to check for drunk driving among school vehicle drivers. The three-hour operation, held between 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM, resulted in 58 school drivers being booked for driving under the influence of alcohol. A total of 4,559 school vehicle drivers were tested across the city during the surprise checks. Of those, 58 were found to have consumed alcohol and were immediately prosecuted under the Indian Motor Vehicles (IMV) Act. The driving licences of the errant drivers have also been sent to RTOs for suspension. In an official statement earlier, Bengaluru Police said, 'The vehicles in which the driver was found driving under influence of alcohol have been seized, and the permits of such vehicles have been recommended for cancellation by concerned RTOs.' The police assured citizens that these enforcement measures are part of a larger effort to enhance safety on city roads, especially for school-going children. 'Special drives will continue to make the city roads safer by stringent enforcement of traffic rules,' the statement added. In recent months, several school buses have been flagged for traffic violations and reckless driving. Following multiple complaints from parents and school authorities, the Bengaluru police intensified their vigilance. Officials also confirmed that such surprise checks will be conducted regularly across the city and warned that licences of drivers found violating rules will be cancelled.

Youth booked for rash riding in Manipal
Manipal: A youth has been booked for rash riding and multiple traffic violations after a video showing him riding a scooter in a negligent manner went viral on social media, prompting swift action from the local police. The incident took place around 2:30 pm on Tuesday near Babbu Swamy Daivasthana Circle in Manipal. The accused, identified as Mohammad Afrad, was seen riding a Yamaha Fascino (registration number KA 20 EY 8535) without a helmet and using a mobile phone while in motion. The video, widely shared online, also showed two women riding pillion—exceeding the legal passenger limit for two-wheelers. Following public concern over the apparent disregard for road safety, Manipal police initiated an inquiry and registered a case against Afrad on Tuesday. He has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Indian Motor Vehicles (IMV) Act.
