QS World University Rankings '26: IIT-M in top 200, Anna University falls to 465
CHENNAI: The QS World University Rankings 2026, which was released on Thursday, presented a mixed bag of results for the state. While the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has made its debut in the top 200 in the rank list, securing 180th position, Anna University's ranking has slipped from 383rd position to 465th rank this year. IIT Madras has made an impressive leap of 47 places from last year's 227th rank to 180th rank this year, while Anna University's rank dipping by 82 places has triggered concern among faculties of the varsity. Academicians and faculties have blamed the vacant vice chancellor (V-C) post as the main reason behind the drop in its performance. 'For one year, the V-C post has been lying vacant. If an institution is headless for such a long period, it will obviously have an impact on research work, faculty efficiency, quality of education and discipline on the campus,' said former V-C of Anna University, E Balagurusamy. Faculty members also seconded the opinion. NIT Trichy's rank has also dropped from the 701-710 band to 731-740 bracket, while the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) has climbed up from 791-800 bracket to 691st rank. Notably, the University of Madras was ranked 526th in the QS World University Rankings 2024, however, the varsity, like last year, has failed to feature in the list this year too. The rank list released by the London-based higher education analyst, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) features 1,500 institutions across the globe. Of this 54 institutions are from India, among which seven universities are from Tamil Nadu. The other institutions from the state which have featured in the rank list are Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (901-950 rank bracket), SRM Institute of Science and Technology (1001-1200 rank band) and Sathyabhama Institute of Science and Technology (1201-1400). Meanwhile, IIT Madras has attributed the rank improvement to its strong performance in key metrics such as academic reputation, employer perception, faculty-student ratio, international collaborations and sustainability initiatives.

IIT Madras, STL launch multi-core fibre testbed at TTDF Symposium
Indian Institute of Technology Madras and optical solutions major STL Technologies have jointly launched a new multi-core fibre (MCF) testbed, with the aim of advancing India's optical communication infrastructure. The facility was inaugurated at the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) Symposium held by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) at the IIT Madras Research Park in Chennai. The infrastructure includes both underground (4.07 km) and aerial (1.20 km) cable installations. The cables incorporate 12 multi-core fibres (four cores each) alongside 12 standard single-mode fibres, and will be open to both academic and industry partners. Essentially a research and development (R&D) platform for testing the capabilities of optical fibres in a controlled environment, the testbed will be used to assess use cases and test component interoperability within the MCF ecosystem, the DoT said in a statement. Speaking at the inaugural session, Telecom Secretary Neeraj Mittal said India was at a critical juncture in its innovation journey and stressed the need for collaboration and optimal utilisation of the country's resources. He also announced plans for a dedicated portal to facilitate such collaboration. Launched in 2022, TTDF is a government initiative that supports R&D in next-generation telecom technologies, particularly those aimed at bridging the digital divide in rural and remote areas. It has received over 1,300 proposals for R&D funding since its inception. So far, 120 projects have been approved with over ₹500 crore in funding, and more than ₹187 crore has already been disbursed to beneficiaries, including academic institutions, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and startups, the DoT said. Implemented by Digital Bharat Nidhi, TTDF aims to reduce reliance on telecom imports, promote indigenous manufacturing and develop intellectual property in the sector. The TTDF Symposium 2025 was organised to provide a platform for funding beneficiaries to discuss synergies and potential pathways to advance their research and development. The event brought together academics, startups and industry representatives involved in the programme.

200 JEE toppers, parent to get free flight to IIT Madras for special campus tour
In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) has invited the top 200 all-India rankers of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced 2025 to visit its campus in Chennai -- and is footing the bill for their air travel, along with one parent per move is aimed at giving the country's brightest engineering aspirants a closer look at campus life, academic facilities, and the opportunities that come with being part of one of India's premier institute hopes that the visit will help students make an informed decision before choosing their IIT and course preferences during counselling. Each year, after the declaration of JEE Advanced results, the top rankers are wooed by several IITs through outreach campaigns, alumni meets, and personal counselling IIT Madras has gone a step further this year by covering the airfares for both the student and one parent. The visit includes guided campus tours, interactions with faculty, lab visits, hostel walkthroughs, and a chance to meet current students and to the media, an IIT Madras official said, 'We want to create a welcoming experience and show students what life here is really like -- not just in terms of academics, but also community, research, and support.'The invited students will also get to explore the institute's recent developments in cutting-edge research, innovation labs, entrepreneurship cells, and global top rankers and their parents welcomed the gesture. IIT Madras BS degree convocation marks milestone in democratizing tech education
MUMBAI: On a day marked by quiet revolutions and roaring applause, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras held its Convocation and Certificate Distribution Ceremony for the BS Degree programmes on 8 June 2025—a moment that didn't just honour graduates but redefined who gets to be called one. In an auditorium humming with possibility, 867 students from across India and abroad received their scrolls—some holding three-year BSc degrees, others the first-ever batch to earn the four-year BS degrees in Data Science and Applications or in Electronic Systems. Among them were students from remote villages, urban sprawls, and even foreign cities. Some were just 18, others over 80. 'This is not just a graduation. It's a declaration,' said Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras. 'That knowledge belongs to all. That no income bracket or geography or prior degree should keep someone from accessing world-class education.' Of the graduating cohort, nearly 150 come from families earning less than Rs 1 lakh annually. Another 100 come from households earning less than Rs 5 lakh. These degrees were not easy. Delivered online but assessed rigorously in person at exam centres across India and abroad, they are as academically demanding as any other degree from IIT Madras. They come with projects, labs, capstones—and grit. More than half the students (52%) are juggling this programme alongside another undergraduate degree. While 72% come from engineering or technical fields, a significant 22% come from arts, commerce, or sciences—each drawn by the programme's promise to rewire careers and reimagine futures. Among those honoured was Dr. Sadineni Nikhil Chowdary, an MBBS doctor from AIIMS Delhi, who not only graduated with a CGPA of 9.82 but also topped the GATE Data Science and AI exam. He now plans to pursue MTech at IIT Madras, showing that medicine and machine learning are not parallel tracks but converging ones. 'Three of the top 10 ranks in GATE DA were secured by our BS students,' noted Prof. Kamakoti. 'That speaks volumes of the academic depth this programme fosters.' The day also underscored a larger vision. With over 38,000 active learners and growing, this hybrid BS programme is IIT Madras' blueprint for Sustainable Development Goal 4: universal access to quality education. Whether it's a diploma, a BSc, or a full BS degree, students have flexible exits—and for some, even free rides, thanks to CSR support. 'We're not just building coders or data scientists,' said Prof. Andrew Thangaraj, Coordinator of the BS Program. 'We're shaping informed problem-solvers who understand both complexity and context—who can write code, but also ask the right questions.' Chief Guest Mr. Aravind Krishnan, Managing Director and Head, Southeast Asia Private Equity, Blackstone, described the programme as 'a global model for accessible, future-ready education,' adding that 'the ability to extract insights from complexity is now among the most valuable skills of our time.' Today, more than 4,800 students are studying tuition-free thanks to philanthropic support. Over 10,000 students from extremely low-income families receive up to 75% scholarship. Some have already secured admission into institutions like IISc, IITB, IITD, ISB, University of Michigan, and Texas A&M. What started as a bold experiment is now a quiet revolution. IIT Madras Awards Degrees to 867 Students in First 4-Year BS Degree Cohort
