Kheri finds place in record book for construction of 1k ponds in a month

Lucknow: The Lakhimpur Kheri district made a place for itself in the India Book of Records for constructing the highest number of community ponds in a month. The construction of ponds, undertaken as part of the Har Gaon Talab campaign, saw 1,030 community ponds constructed between May 15 and June 15, 2025. The feat was recognised by the India Book of Records adjudicator, Pramil Dwivedi, at a ceremony on Wednesday, where he presented a certificate and medal to district magistrate Durga Shakti Nagpal and chief development officer Abhishek Kumar. Describing the district as a "shining star of water empowerment," Dwivedi said that over 700 acres of land was made suitable for water conservation, and 70 to 80 ponds were constructed in each block. "The campaign is a perfect example of collective effort, administrative commitment, and public participation. Through this record, Lakhimpur Kheri demonstrated that with strong willpower and dedicated efforts, new heights of rural development can be achieved. The 'Har Gaon Talab' campaign has now become a public movement for water security, rather than remaining merely a govt programme," he said. Nagpal said that the administration set a goal to dig more than 1,000 ponds within a month and ensure their completion before the first monsoon rains. The campaign was led by the CDO and executed by a team. "The 'Har Gaon Talab' campaign was not just a water conservation drive but significantly contributed to strengthening the rural economy. It generated nearly 7 lakh man-days of employment, providing livelihoods to farmers and labourers. Over 30% of participants were women, making the campaign a model of both development and women's empowerment. Through this initiative, the campaign demonstrated how environmental projects can also foster social inclusion and economic resilience," Nagpal said.

Woman paints Kathakali mask on groundnut, enters record book

1 2 Mangaluru: Pooja B, a resident of Anadka, Perlampady in Puttur, earned a place in the India Book of Records (IBR) for her miniature artwork. An MCom graduate, Pooja was recognised as an IBR Achiever for painting a vibrant Kathakali dance face mask on a groundnut, measuring just 1.4cm in length, in three minutes and 30 seconds. She told TOI that her passion for painting began early, though she was never able to attend formal art classes. "During the Covid-19 lockdown, I started experimenting with portraits and soon began receiving orders," she said. For the past two years, however, Pooja had one goal in mind, creating a unique record. "I kept thinking, what could I do that was different? I knew it had to be either miniature or massive. My mother suggested I try painting on a groundnut," she recalled. After multiple trials on 10 to 12 peeled nuts, Pooja settled on the Kathakali face mask as her subject. "I have chosen it because of its vibrant colours and intricate design. It was not easy, but I wanted to showcase something striking," she said. Pooja has also applied to the World Book of Records and is awaiting confirmation. "My next goal is to create something on a much larger scale," she said, while also preparing for the UGC NET exam. She hopes to popularise groundnut miniature art further.

Mandya district sets benchmark in successful implementation of Children's Gram Sabhas

Mandya district has set a benchmark in inclusive rural governance by successfully implementing Children's Gram Sabhas and Women's Gram Sabhas. The district secured first place in the State for organising Children's Gram Sabhas and seventh place for Women's Gram Sabhas. This recognition highlights Mandya's efforts to empower women and children at the village level, said Zilla Panchayat CEO Nandini K.R. on Thursday. As part of a summer camp initiative, 216 out of 233 Gram Panchayats (GPs) conducted Children's Gram Sabhas, involving more than 17,500 children in awareness-building activities focused on rights, responsibilities, and community involvement. Similarly, 212 GPs organised Women's Gram Sabhas since March, achieving a 92% implementation rate. These forums encouraged women's participation in local governance and development planning. On April 24, all 233 GPs celebrated National Panchayati Raj Day, hosting events to strengthen public engagement in rural governance. A standout initiative came from Annooru GP in Maddur taluk, which entered the India Book of Records by organising a large-scale rangoli event on Panchayati Raj Day. The event, themed around women's empowerment, saw the participation from nearly all 1,544 households in the village, drawing 1,418 rangolis using natural colours. Ms. Nandini praised the effort as a 'model of best practices' in community participation, adding that several other GPs in the district are now adopting similar approaches.
