Ludhiana municipal corporation launches pre-monsoon drainage drive to prevent waterlogging.
Ludhiana: As the monsoon season approaches, the municipal corporation (MC) has launched a comprehensive action plan to prevent waterlogging and ensure efficient drainage across the city. On the directions of mayor Inderjit Kaur and MC chief Aaditya Dachalwal, a meeting was convened under the chairmanship of joint commissioner Ankur Mahindroo, where employees concerned were instructed to carry out regular cleaning and desilting of the Buddha Dariya. Officials confirmed that poclain machines have already been deployed and desilting work is ongoing. The meeting was attended by chief engineer Ravinder Garg, executive engineers Ekjot Singh and Parshotam Singh, along with SDOs from the operations and maintenance (O&M) cell. In addition to Buddha Dariya, instructions were issued to clean internal drains and nullahs across the city. This includes the nullah from Gurdwara Dukhniwaran Sahib to Shingar Cinema Road, and those in Dhokka Mohalla, Dharampura, Books Market, Domoria Bridge, and Barewal Drain. Field staff have also been directed to clean road gullies throughout the city before the monsoon begins. They must submit certificates confirming the work to higher authorities. Generator sets are being installed at all pumping stations to ensure rainwater can be drained even during power outages. Preparations are also being made to prevent waterlogging at railway under bridges (RUBs), including those on Pakhowal Road, near Lodhi Club, and Domoria Bridge. MC commissioner Dachalwal announced that a flood control room will be set up, and a helpline number will be shared with the public soon. Ground staff have been told to complete all arrangements in advance. Zonal commissioners have been instructed to monitor their respective areas closely. Commissioner Dachalwal will also conduct field inspections in the coming days to review the situation on the ground.

Plogging & plantation drives mark environ day in Ludh
Ludhiana: Plogging, plantation and cleanliness campaigns were undertaken across the city Thursday to mark . Several social and industrial groups, besides, of course, the municipal corporation, came together to make it all possible. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now As part of the initiative, a plogging/cleanliness drive – Plogathon – was launched from outside the office of UCPMA on Gill Road. It was flagged off by mayor Inderjit Kaur, and organised in collaboration with NGO Switch For Change, Round Table India, Federation of Industrial & Commercial Organisation (FICO), among others. It saw an overwhelming response from students, NCC cadets and volunteers. Similar drives were also organised at BCM Senior Secondary School, Chandigarh Road; School of Eminence to Sector 32 Chowk, Chandigarh Road; SDP College to Gandhi Nagar Market; MC's zone 'A' office to Bhadaur House to name a few. Over 3,000 residents/volunteers participated in the various events, and about 1,400 kg of waste was collected during the plogging drives. MC joint commissioner Ankur Mahindroo, assistant commissioner Neeraj Jain, health officer Vipal Malhotra, CSO Ashwani Sahota and CDO Maheshwar Singh also came forward to lend the citizens a helping hand during the plogging/cleanliness drives. The celebrations at Gill Road saw social activist Col JS Gill, FICO president Gurmeet Singh Kular, among others. Later in the day, MLA (Ludhiana East) Daljit Singh Bhola Grewal and the mayor took up a plantation drive under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign during the event organised on Chandigarh Road. MC assistant commissioner Neeraj Jain was also present. Lauding the NGOs, residents, and civic body officials for their enthusiastic participation in the World Environment Day celebrations, mayor Kaur appealed to the public to do their bit and support the authorities in keeping the city clean and green. She said the civic body is doing its best, but a pollution-free environment and cleanliness cannot be achieved without the help and support of the residents.

Ludhiana dog sanctuary: Dairy owners objects to its location as mayor and MP lay foundation stone.
Ludhiana: A proposed dog sanctuary and hospital on Hambran Road, unveiled Wednesday by mayor Inderjit Kaur and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora, has triggered local backlash and reignited debate over how to address the city's stray dog problem. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Planned over two acres, the facility will offer shelter, medical treatment, spaying, neutering, and vaccinations for injured or sick stray dogs. The project, to be managed by the (SPCA), aims to house 2,500 animals initially and is being developed in line with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). However, dairy owners near the site objected, claiming the land had been designated for a public park. A dairy operator who had earlier encroached upon the land reportedly mobilised others against the project. In response, MP Arora promised to develop two separate parks within the dairy complex to address their concerns. The mayor called the sanctuary "a gift to the people of Ludhiana," saying it would help manage street dog populations humanely while reducing risks to residents. But some activists questioned its effectiveness. Social worker Maneet Diwan argued that similar existing facilities, like one in Jamalpur housing 750 dogs, haven't resolved aggressive dog encounters. "This facility will prioritise sick dogs — not the ones attacking people," he said, advocating for a robust sterilisation drive instead. Colonel J S Gill, another animal welfare advocate, said while sterilisation can reduce mating-related aggression, it doesn't eliminate all risks. "A sterilised dog may still act aggressively if threatened or guarding food," he noted. "A comprehensive plan that includes sterilisation, vaccination, and public education is key." Despite mixed reactions, civic officials remain committed to the project, hoping it will mark a turning point in Ludhiana's management of stray animals — though community trust remains a work in progress. Ludhiana: Amid uproar in MC House, 1,054 agendas passed in 18 minutes
The municipal corporation (MC) on Friday passed its budget comprising 1,054 development agendas worth crores of rupees in just 18 minutes, triggering uproar from the BJP and the Congress councillors. The general house meeting, held at Guru Nanak Dev Bhawan, witnessed fierce protests, slogan-shouting and walkout by Opposition members who alleged that they had received the lengthy agenda list only the previous night, leaving them with no time to study the proposals. The meeting, which began at around 10.10 am, was attended by mayor Inderjit Kaur, senior deputy mayor, deputy mayor, AAP MLAs, MC commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal and senior officials. As the meeting commenced, BJP and Congress councillors demanded a zero hour before the agenda items were taken up. They further complained that the detailed list of development proposals, which had been passed in earlier finance and contract committee (F&CC) meetings, had not been shared with them in time. Despite their protests, the agenda was read out by Rajeev Bhardwaj, in charge of the agenda branch, on the commissioner's directive. Throughout the reading and approval of the items, Opposition councillors raised slogans, chanting 'shame shame AAP government' and 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai', terming the process a 'mockery of democracy'. However, the AAP councillors, along with the Mayor and MLAs, continued with the proceedings and passed the proposals amid the ruckus. Later, BJP and Congress leaders condemned the functioning of the civic body, accusing the mayor and AAP legislators of sidelining elected councillors from the Opposition parties. BJP's district president Rajnish Dhiman said the manner in which the general house meeting was conducted was undemocratic. 'If all decisions are to be taken solely by the mayor and ruling party MLAs, what is the point of calling a house meeting?' he questioned. Dhiman also criticised the 'paperless budget' approach, stating that sending hundreds of agenda items to councillors on WhatsApp late at night and expecting a discussion early next morning was unacceptable. 'The budget was passed without any proper debate or input from opposition members. This is not how a democratic institution should function,' he added. BJP's leader of Opposition Poonam Ratra and deputy leader Rohit Sikka echoed similar sentiments. They alleged that the mayor had shown no interest in allowing discussion or suggestions from councillors. 'The way the budget was pushed through shows that development is not a priority. The mayor is only interested in pleasing her party MLAs,' Ratra said. Sikka added that the BJP would now hit the streets to protest and raise awareness among citizens about how opposition councillors' work was being stalled deliberately. Leaders from the Shiromani Akali Dal, BJP and Congress also held a joint media briefing outside the venue soon after the session ended. They alleged corruption in the ongoing streetlight project worth crores, claiming that 8,500 LED lights were being allocated unfairly. 'AAP workers are getting lights even in places where they are not needed, while our wards are left in the dark,' a leader alleged. Congress leader Shyam Sunder Malhotra criticised the administration for 'not sending printed copies of the agenda despite repeated requests'. 'This is against the rules. Councillors have the right to study the proposals in advance. We are not here for politics but for development. We will move court. The court will cancel the agendas passed by AAP leaders amid favoritism ahead of the Ludhiana West constituency bypoll,' he said. Meanwhile, MC officials stated that the general house approved regularisation of nearly 800 overage employees, including gardeners, beldars and drivers. They also highlighted implementation of 'e-Nigam' — a digital governance initiative under which all future general house and F&CC meetings would go paperless, similar to the Punjab Vidhan Sabha. Officials said the agenda had been shared digitally through WhatsApp as part of this initiative. In another key resolution, the house approved the takeover of several areas under the LIT scheme for maintenance, including Maharishi Valmiki Nagar, Rajguru Nagar, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (SBS Nagar), Bharat Nagar Extension, Sant Ishar Singh Nagar and Sukhdev Enclave. Residents of these localities have long been demanding civic services, and the decision is expected to bring them major relief. Present during the meeting were AAP MLAs Daljit Singh Bhola Grewal, Madan Lal Bagga, Ashok Prashar Pappi, Kulwant Singh Sidhu, Rajinder Pal Kaur Chhina, senior deputy mayor Rakesh Prashar, deputy mayor Prince Johar, MC additional commissioner Paramdeep Singh, joint commissioners Ankur Mahindroo, Abhishek Sharma, Vineet Kumar and zonal commissioners Gurpal Singh, Neeraj Jain and Jasdev Singh Sekhon among others.
