US dollar hits multi-year low as analysts warn of dangers of Trump policies

The US dollar is on the slide with seemingly no end in sight to the sell-off. Investors are shying away from the world's reserve currency as traders grow increasingly uncertain about United States' economic policy. From a geo-political perspective, two days of high-level talks in London between China and the US have yielded little fruit. The talks were to resolve conflicts that had emerged since a 90-day pause was placed on US-imposed trade tariffs. The two countries first met in Geneva, and the talks this week in London helped to wrap up those discussions. US President Donald Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social and said: "Our deal with China is done, subject to final approval from President Xi and me." But officials from both sides said the London agreement would not alter the broad outlines of the May truce, which lowered — but did not eliminate — new tariffs announced by the two countries since Trump launched a new trade war earlier this year. Financial markets are becoming somewhat numb to the ongoing trade war dramas, with the exception of currency markets. The drawn-out trade discussions, and the lack of any binding trade deal with the US's major trading partners, have led to an exodus out of the US dollar "The US dollar is under renewed pressure, probing multi-year lows," InTouch senior FX analyst Sean Callow told the ABC. "[The US dollar] started 2025 with strong momentum as investors priced in a 'Trump trade' of dollar gains, backed by loose fiscal policy supporting growth and making the Fed reluctant to cut rates. "Things started to unravel in March as Trump's tariff campaign proved more aggressive than expected and administration officials said they were willing to tolerate a weaker economy in the short term. "Recession fears surged on the April 2 tariff announcement, hurting the dollar's yield support." This dynamic also led to an enormous US Treasury bond sell-off as global investors began to question the durability of the United States' fiscal position. This pushed investors, Mr Callow said, into the euro. "Moreover, the sell-off in long-term Treasuries raised fears of a 'Sell America' trade, largely benefiting the euro," he said. "USD weakness has helped the Aussie [dollar] push above 65 cents, reaching highs since November." The US Dollar Index (DXY) tracks the value of the US dollar against a basket of countries. It hit its lowest level since January 2022 on Thursday at 97.8 at 9pm AEST. While the US dollar's slide is supporting the Australian dollar, it's not created as much of an updraft for the local currency as expected. "It is clear that the Aussie [dollar] is not investors' preferred alternative to the US dollar," Mr Callow said. Further US dollar weakness and Australian dollar strength may depend on how currency traders view the credibility of the Trump administration's policies. University of Michigan professor Justin Wolfers says Donald Trump's recent intervention in the Los Angeles riots is another sign for the financial markets that his policies are unpredictable and unorthodox. "That this is a White House, not given to respecting the usual guardrails of civil society, [which] was clear on January 6th," he said. Professor Wolfers told the ABC there was a sense in the US that Trump was leading the US down a dangerous policy path. "The sense of things fraying is, I think, very dangerous," he said. "There's a deep fear among a lot of people over here. "How far does [Trump's interventions in state affairs] go? "You can't rule out anything. "There are hushed conversations in the hallways everywhere with people saying how far does this go? "Or maybe he does what emerging autocrats always do, which is just skate close enough, where you're not quite sure where the law is meant to be." The direction of US interest rates, as determined by the US Federal Reserve, will also hold sway in terms of the direction of both the US and Australian dollars. As for the tariff war, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he expected the US would extend the existing 90-day pause on some of its most aggressive tariffs to allow trade talks with other countries to continue. The Australian dollar continues to trade around 65 US cents, up 4.5 per cent since the start of the year.

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi's move to the UK has been ‘difficult' amid renovation

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi have had a few bumps in the road to deal with as they settle into their new life in England, but a source exclusively tells In Touch that they're committed to making the most of their adventure and not letting any setbacks get them down. 'They knew going into this that it wasn't going to be totally smooth sailing, it was always going to be a challenge,' the source says of the U.K. move. 'Taking on a big renovation in a foreign country is not easy. But they're both very skilled at renovation. It's one of their passions.' After decades of calling California home, Ellen, 67, and Portia, 52, quietly packed up in 2024 and moved more than 5,000 miles to a new 43-acre property nestled in Cotswolds, the heart of the British countryside about 90 minutes outside of London. The Cotswolds' celebrity residents include David and Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss and Simon Cowell. Ellen and Portia sold their Carpinteria, California, estate — which they purchased for $70 million in 2022 — to Singapore-based tycoon Robert Friedland for a whopping $96 million. Unfortunately, their new $15 million Cotswolds home was plagued with floods, resulting in expensive damage, and the couple has since moved to a new mansion which is about 30 minutes from their original property. The source says the couple — who have been married since 2008 — have 'navigated plenty of hiccups' in the past with other projects, adding, 'So they weren't all that thrown off by the stumbling blocks they've faced in the U.K.' 'It's been difficult at times because they do miss the comfort of things back in America, but more than anything they're pleased to be embracing this new start,' the insider explains. 'They're getting to know the people around them and loving the property and the area. They take long walks in the woods every day, build roaring fires at night, all that stuff that's so typical of the English countryside. Ultimately, it is proving to be a very good move for their souls and for their marriage.' The bumps in the road come after In Touch reported that the couple moved overseas in late 2024 because Ellen was 'just done' with the United States, while her wife was equally ready to 'turn the page' and begin a new chapter in their lives. Ellen had gone into isolation over the years following reports that she was mean to her staff on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. In light of the scandal, the former host chose to end her long-running talk show in May 2021 after 19 seasons. She opened up in a rare comment about being canceled during her Ellen's Last Stand … Up tour stop at Radio City Music Hall in New York City before her move in August 2024. During her set, Ellen recalled being dubbed the 'most hated person in America' after years of being the celebrity personality that fans 'most want to babysit' their children. She then recounted turning to professional help in light of the backlash and was advised to 'avoid all media.' After she seemed to hit rock bottom, Ellen recalled how she eventually regained the strength to 'heal' when she started writing jokes again. She then credited getting out of the 'bubble in Hollywood' for helping her realize the 'amount of support' she was still receiving from her loved ones. Copyright 2025 Us Weekly. All rights reserved.

Billy Ray Cyrus Reportedly 'Desperate' For 'A New Version' Of Family With Elizabeth Hurley

Billy Ray Cyrus' blossoming relationship with Elizabeth Hurley has motivated him to fix the broken bond within his family. The Country singer has repeatedly made waves for his estranged relationship with some of his children, especially his famous daughter Miley Cyrus. Now, he is reportedly more inclined to rekindle their relationship thanks to his new girlfriend. Billy Ray Cyrus welcomed Miley and her younger siblings, Noah and Braison Cyrus, during his marriage to Tish Cyrus. The former couple's relationship experienced many ups and downs, including multiple divorce filings, before they finally separated in 2022. Love has reportedly changed Billy Ray in more ways than one, as a source recently claimed he wishes to introduce his new lover to his family. They noted he was head over heels for Hurley and believed his children would love her too. Billy Ray, per the insider, saw Hurley as his good luck charm and suspected that she could be the bridge to rekindling his relationship with his estranged family. "He's had a huge turnaround when it comes to his mistake of a marriage and has admitted he should have listened to Miley," the source revealed. They told In Touch that Billy Ray had learned from his mistakes and was willing to swallow his pride if it meant Miley would forgive him. The same applied to Tish and her new husband, Dominic Purcell, with the insider noting the country singer was ready to apologize for any grief he had caused. Billy Ray's complete 180 seemed linked to his romance with Hurley as he wished to enjoy his new relationship while building a stronger bond with his family. The source stressed that he would do whatever was necessary to fix his mistakes and earn his loved ones' forgiveness, saying: "He isn't trying to go backwards, but he's hoping and praying that they can have a new beginning and a new version of their family." While his relationship with Miley has become estranged, Billy Ray has a good relationship with his other children. "Noah and Braison are still speaking to him, so he's counting his lucky stars that he at least has two kids that don't hate him," the insider added. Days before a source shared Billy Ray's desperate attempts to reunite with his family, The Blast covered his blossoming romance with Hurley. The couple turned heads at the opening of the Orizzonti/Rossi exhibition. The event celebrated Valentino's showcase in Rome, with the pair stepping out in their finest. Billy Ray and Hurley put on a stunning display as lovers, unable to keep their hands to themselves. The actress looked radiant in a hot pink Safiyaa gown that gave onlookers plenty to see with its plunging neckline design. Meanwhile, the country singer rocked his signature style. True to his country image, Billy Ray donned his trademark cowboy hat and shades while rocking a black jacket with leather accents. He completed the look with tight-fitting pants adorned with silver medallions. He and Hurley attended the event as a trio, with her son Damian looking dapper in a red suit. Billy Ray and Hurley's relationship began platonically while filming "Christmas in Paradise." They immediately bonded on set, with the singer noting they were so different, yet they felt strangely connected. Surprisingly, they didn't stay in contact after the movie. The couple reconnected two years later during a difficult time in Billy Ray's life. He was pleasantly surprised when Hurley contacted him to offer her support and cheer him on through his struggles, a move that paved the path to their romance. They officially became a couple and made their Instagram debut in April 2025. The post captured Billy Ray and Hurley cozying up on a farm while wearing blue ensembles. They looked happy and in love, as the media personality placed a tender kiss on the actress's cheek. Last month, Billy Ray caused a stir on Instagram after dropping a throwback video of him and Miley performing a song. The Blast reported that the touching video raised eyebrows because his ex-wife unfollowed their daughter hours later. Internet sleuths noticed that Tish had unfollowed Miley on Instagram and speculated if she was uncomfortable with a possible reconciliation with Billy Ray. However, she caught wind of the chatter and hit the follow button again, making many suspect she accidentally unfollowed her daughter. The timing of the incident was suspicious because Billy Ray reflected on his good time with Miley. The video he shared captured him on the guitar and his daughter on the piano while singing an emotional tune about missing and loving someone. "Can't wait to see this young lady. Crazy how time flies," he captioned the post. Does Billy Ray Cyrus stand a chance at reuniting with his family?

Heather Locklear's Home Is Her ‘Sanctuary' as She Enjoys a ‘Peaceful Life' After Years of Struggles

Heather Locklear is finding peace at her beautiful Los Angeles mansion and friends are praising the Melrose Place alum for keeping her life on track through faith, courage and sheer willpower, sources exclusively tell In Touch. 'Heather is incredibly happy with her daughter, Ava, who is the light of her life, and she has her little Maltese dog, Mister, with her at all times too,' insiders close to the actress, 63, say. Sources tell In Touch that Heather has been enjoying this sweet spot now that her 'life is so peaceful, but it's been hard won so she does tend to be very protective of it.' 'Her home is her sanctuary, and it really is a paradise. It's in the Malibu mountains, with a beautiful pool and view, and very private,' sources exclusively tell In Touch. 'She loves hosting dinners outside on her huge long table, she has a small group of trusted friends and they are around a fair amount.' It's only been a few weeks since reports surfaced claiming that Heather and fiancé Chris Heisser, who was her high school sweetheart, called it quits. While the timeline surrounding their split remains unknown, a close friend of the Game of Love star told People they have been separated for 'a while,' revealing she's in a 'great place.' Tipsters told the outlet in June 2020 that Heather and Chris, 63, got engaged earlier that year in April 'as they were celebrating her year of sobriety.' The former flames have a lot of history together, dating in high school during the '70s, before reuniting in 2017. They briefly broke up in 2019 before getting back together one year later. 'She's in the best place right now,' one pal shared in the wake of their latest split. 'Her friends and family are happy for her — good things in her future definitely.' It was further claimed they 'haven't been together for a while.' As for the reason behind their breakup, Us Weekly reported that it was 'a slow fizzle.' 'They are still friends and support each other's sobriety,' the source added. 'They are not spending as much time with each other. It's minimal. She's focusing on herself. She is sober and doing really well.' According to the report, 'Heather is single and she's ready to date again.' Another insider claimed that they both reached the decision to part ways amicably, noting, 'She hasn't seen Chris since the New Year but wishes him all the best.' The now-exes had an on-again, off-again relationship as she struggled with substance abuse and went to rehab. She completed her most recent stint in October 2019 and was ordered by a court to continue a structured out-patient care plan. Now, it appears she is making strides in her sobriety journey. Heather made a public appearance at the Calgary Expo in Canada this April, during which she spoke on a panel about her career in Hollywood. Sources exclusively tell In Touch that Heather has 'created her own world, she can go days without leaving her property and be perfectly happy.'

Who Is ‘Destination X' Contestant Biggy Bailey? Everything We Know About the Content Creator So Far

Biggy Bailey is one of 12 contestants on NBC's new reality competition show Destination X – and he's ready to 'do whatever it takes' to win the game and bring home the coveted $250,000 cash prize. In Touch reveals everything to know so far about the competitor. Biggy is a successful content creator and a sports bettor. He is described as a 'walking sports encyclopedia' who 'excels at calculating risk and crunching numbers,' according to NBC. Additionally, he was able to learn 'the skill of persuasion and convincing others to follow his lead' from his prior experience as a sales manager. Despite being on a reality competition show that revolves around travel and calls for competitors to have an extensive knowledge of European geography and culture, Biggy had only traveled throughout the United States and Mexico prior to his stint on the series. What he didn't know from experience, he made up for with studying — and it paid off! In the series premiere episode, he showed off his skills in the suitcase challenge, when he got six European country-related clues correct in a row. He would have won the challenge if fellow contestants Ally Bross and Mack Fitzgerald hadn't teamed up to snag the win by a hair with seven tags. He also avoided being the first player sent home by correctly guessing they were in Rome in the map room. He is from Chattanooga, Tennessee. Biggy has racked up a sizable social media following over the years. On his TikTok, where he is known as 'biggycookthebook,' he has a whopping 1.2 million followers. He also has over 21,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel. Aside from his work on social media, he additionally hosts a podcast called 'Cook the Book.' In the Spotify summary for the show, he describes the podcast as 'Biggy touching on the topics that matter (not really).' Destination X takes competitors on the journey of a lifetime as they make their way through Europe in a blacked-out bus where they 'eat, sleep and travel together' while strategizing and navigating the ever-changing dynamics with other contestants in the group. Throughout the course of the season, each player must take on a number of high-pressure challenges and interpret sneaky clues – and also weed out the occasional red herrings – given by host Jeffrey Dean Morgan in order to find out exactly where in the world they are. 'They will need to rely on their knowledge of pop culture, history, geography and observational skills to win clues to their current location and earn an all-important advantage,' the NBC press release read. 'The players each share an unmistakable sense of wanderlust, but with constantly shifting alliances and unexpected adversaries, they're forced to discover who they can trust, whose strengths will take them the farthest and who to send to the Map Room.' According to his bio, Biggy plans to use his 'loveable' and 'outgoing' personality to 'strategically connect with his competitors and do whatever it takes to win the game.' The first episode of Destination X premieres on May 27, 2025. Fans can continue to follow Biggy's journey on the show on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC or catch it streaming the next day on Peacock.
