Jennifer Love Hewitt teases ‘very different' Julie James in I Know What You Did Last Summer
Jennifer Love Hewitt has teased Julie James will be 'very different' in I Know What You Did Last Summer. The 46-year-old actor is set to reprise the role after first starring as Julie in the 1997 original and its 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, and Hewitt has now hinted Julie has changed a lot in the upcoming slasher. Speaking about her character during an interview with Extra, Hewitt said: 'She's very different. I think you'll see shades of that girl because I want those to be in there, but she's lived in. 'She's in her 40s. She's carried this a long time. I think she's figured out how to deal. She's a professor in sort of the mind and trauma and PTSD field. 'So, I think she's figured out a way to put herself in a position in her life so she can deal every day with what happened to her in her teens. She's a little edgier. She's funny.' As well as Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr. will return for I Know What You Did Last Summer as Ray Bronson. Meanwhile, Sarah Michelle Gellar - who starred in the original I Know What You Did Last Summer as the ill-fated Helen Shivers - has been given an 'unofficial' role in the upcoming slasher by director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. I Know What You Did Last Summer - which will hit screens on 18 July 2025 - follows a group of teens who are haunted by a deadly secret after a hit-and-run cover-up. With a masked killer stalking them one year later, the group seek out two survivors from the infamous Southport massacre of 1997 as their past comes back with a vengeance. Previously, Robinson teased I Know What You Did Last Summer would be 'much more brutal' than the original. Speaking with People, she said: '[The horror elements are] ratcheted up to a hundred in this - it's much more brutal. 'There's definitely more methodology to every kill in this movie, unlike the first, which is kind of just him [the killer] stalking them and going after them. 'There's not a lot of gore or blood or violence in the first one. There certainly is in this one.' Robinson added she wanted to make I Know What You Did Last Summer for fans of the original flick, though emphasised the slasher would still be accessible to newcomers to the franchise. She explained: '[We] approached it like super fans, so I think people are going to be really happy. All the things that you want to see in this movie, you're going to see in this movie ... 'We very purposefully wanted to make this movie both for fans of the original who are coming to this and excited about the easter eggs but also for a new audience that can find I Know and almost watch the first one like a prequel. 'That was very front of mind for me as we made this movie. You don't need to do any research coming into I Know What You Did Last Summer. You just have to have a really good time.'

The real reason Sarah Michelle Gellar turned down I Know What You Did Last Summer remake revealed
Sony released the first trailer for its highly-anticipated I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel on Tuesday, which introduces both new characters and brings back a few familiar faces. Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. reprise their roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson from the 1997 original and the 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. This new film focuses on a new group of teenagers (Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer King, Tyriq Withers and Sarah Pidgeon), who are taunted by a vicious stalker who somehow knows a deadly secret from their past. They ultimately get some advice from two survivors of the 1997 Southport Massacre - Julie and Ray - though it seems director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) tried to bring another original cast member back: Sarah Michelle Gellar. Gellar, 48, played Helen Shivers in the original, though she has consistently said she will not be in this project, despite being good friends with Robinson, starring in her 2022 film Do Revenge, and being married to Prinze Jr. since 2002. The reason is a simple one: Helen Shivers was killed in the first film, but, as Robinson told Entertainment Weekly, that didn't stop her from trying. 'I tried, okay? I harassed her! But she is dead. I tried to pitch some crazy s--- too,' Robinson joked. 'I was like, "What if it's like you weren't dead and you're actually alive, but in hiding?'" the director recalled. 'And Sarah's like, "I was on ice. I was the most dead a person could be. You can see my frozen body,"' Robinson recalled. 'I was like, "Yeah, but what if?" And she said, "I am dead. I am Sarah Dead Gellar,"' Robinson joked. A photo of her Helen character is seen at the trailer resting on her gravestone, though it seems that will be all fans will see of that character. Back in February 2023, when Gellar was accepting the SCAD TVFest Icon Award in Atlanta, she revealed Robinson was already trying to pitch her. 'As I explained to Jennifer, I am dead. I am dead dead. On ice,' Gellar joked of her character's fate, who was found alongside Ryan Phillippe's Barry in the icebox by Julie in the original film. Gellar added, 'She's like, "Are you sure you're dead dead?" I'm like, "It's soap dish dead. I don't have a head. You can't write for someone that doesn't have a head. I'm dead."' She was asked again about returning to the franchise in October 2024, though she teased a new role, of sorts, in the franchise. 'My best friend [Jennifer Kaytin Robinson] is directing it, so we joke that I have an unofficial job, which is I am continuity,' Gellar explained. 'So I'm always the one telling her, "Well, that would happen, or that wouldn't happen with those characters," so I do have kind of an unofficial job title,' she added. I Know What You Did Last Summer will hit theaters nationwide on July 18.

'I Know What You Did Last Summer' sequel trailer: Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr return in revamped summer horror saga
Sony Pictures has unveiled the suspense-filled first trailer for the upcoming sequel to 'I Know What You Did Last Summer', reviving the fan-favourite horror franchise with a blend of fresh faces and original cast members. The film is set to hit theatres on July 18. Unveiled on official social media handles, following an early sneak peek at CinemaCon last month, the trailer reintroduces the eerie coastal town of Southport, the backdrop for the franchise's infamous murders, and teases new secrets, old grudges, and a chilling sense of deja vu. The sequel is directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Sam Lansky, based on a draft by Leah McKendrick, as per The Hollywood Reporter. Returning from the original creative team is Neal Moritz, producer of the 1997 cult hit. This latest instalment stars Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Hauer-King, and Chase Sui Wonders, alongside legacy stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr , reprising their roles from the original film and its 1998 follow-up, 'I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.' The new storyline centres on a group of five friends who make a pact to remain silent after a devastating car accident. But their shared secret begins to unravel when their paths cross with two survivors of the original Southport Massacre , hinting at a sinister pattern of violence in the quiet seaside town. "This isn't the first time there's been violence like this in Southport," warns Prinze Jr's character in the trailer, suggesting the town's deadly history is far from buried. In another moment, Hewitt's character offers a cryptic challenge, "I just have one question... What did you do last summer?" The original 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' debuted in 1997, based on the novel by Lois Duncan and penned by Scream writer Kevin Williamson. It followed a group of teens being hunted by a mysterious killer with a hook, after they attempted to conceal a fatal accident. The franchise quickly gained a cult following, blending teen drama with slasher thrills. Though not officially attached to the new project, singer and actress Brandy, who co-starred in the first two films, expressed interest in returning. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter last year, she said, "I need them to give me a call because I survived in that movie! I came out in the end, bloodied up, ready to go." 'Extremely bad taste!' Netflix leaves STUNNED fans gasping 'Oh my god' with horrendously 'tasteless' Tweet seemingly making light of the Southport dance class child murders
Streaming giant Netflix faced accusations of being 'tasteless' and 'myopic' after promoting a horror film about a hook-wielding killer in a town called Southport - without realising the stark connotation for UK viewers. The platform had been attempting to publicise a trailer for I Know What You Did Last Summer, which is making a comeback 28 years after its debut. Loosely based on Lois Duncan's novel of the same name, the original box office hit first came out in 1997, followed by I Still Know What You Did Last Summer a year later. But fans turned on Netflix last night after it posted a still from the trailer on X with the clumsily-worded caption: 'This isn't the first time there's been violence like this in Southport.' UK-based social media users were swift to point out that the post - while referring to Southport, North Carolina - was insensitive to the tragic stabbings of Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Bebe King, six, at a Taylor Swift-themed summer camp in Southport, Merseyside, last July. Axel Rudakubana, 18, was jailed for a minimum of 52 years in January for the triple killing. He was also charged with the attempted murder of eight other children, who cannot be named for legal reasons, class instructor Leanne Lucas and businessman John Hayes. In the aftermath of the tragedy, false information about the alleged perpetrator of the Southport attack fuelled an unprecedented outbreak of violence and rioting in 27 towns, with the unrest ending in more than 1,500 people being arrested across the UK. One user wrote in disbelief of the now-deleted Tweet: 'A bit tasteless, eh?' Fans turned on Netflix last night after it posted a still from the trailer on X with the clumsily-worded caption: 'This isn't the first time there's been violence like this in Southport' Another said: 'Erm, you need to have a chat with your UK office about why this needs to be deleted.' A third wrote: 'Oh, my god. This is in extremely bad taste! I can only assume you're not in the UK and have no idea what evil things happened in Southport just a few months ago!' Other users called on Netflix to delete the post. 'I'll assume you're American and as myopic as they come, but change the caption. Not cool,' another pleaded. The revamped film, directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and slated for release on July 18, stars original cast members Jennifer Love Hewitt as Julie James and Freddie Prinze Jr as Ray Bronson. Netflix, which has since deleted the post, has been contacted for comment. UK-based X users were swift to point out that the post - while referring to Southport, North Carolina - was insensitive to the tragic stabbings in Southport, Merseyside, last July
