Photo courtesy of ISD The director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office Xia Baolong, on Saturday gave a keynote speech at a forum marking the fifth anniversary of the National Security Law's enactment in the SAR and visited the national security exhibition gallery. On the fourth day of his inspection tour in the city, Xia warned against complacency on safeguarding national security at the forum held at the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai. The event aimed to boost the understanding and awareness of various sectors regarding the protection of national security. Xia then visited the national security exhibition gallery at the Museum of History. Chief Executive John Lee accompanied him during the museum tour. Xia is expected to wrap up his visit on Sunday.

Revenue department in Coimbatore slashes pending land survey applications in 2 years
Coimbatore: With the introduction of Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) equipment and substantially increasing manpower, the revenue department has brought down the number of pending land survey applications in Coimbatore over the past two years. In 2023, a total of 50,862 applications — including Not Involving Sub-Division (NISD) and Involving Sub-Division (ISD) — were pending with the revenue department. As of June 8, 2025, the number came down to 14,337. This improvement is also being attributed to the higher number of petitions processed every month. Besides, the Madras high court directed authorities to expedite the disposal of pending NISD applications. Following this, significant progress was made, clearing a substantial backlog within a short time. Two years ago, it took a minimum of six months to one year to dispose of an application. Now, the processing time has been reduced to 15 to 60 days. A senior official from the revenue department said the number of surveyors in the district was 60 in 2022. Over the past two years, the number of surveyors has increased to 125, including 53 temporary staff. "We are now disposing of around 8,000 applications a month. "The state govt has instructed us to dispose of each petition within a month," he added. However, due to the real estate boom, the city is expanding rapidly, leading to a steady rise in survey applications, especially in suburban and rural areas. "In 2022, we received around 8,000 ISD applications from rural areas. This number has now increased to 12,000," the official said. For measuring water bodies and highly disputed areas, the department uses Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) equipment. "We have five DGPS units in the district. For regular surveys using tape, we charge ₹400 per side of land. For DGPS-based surveys, the fee is ₹1,000 per side," he said. The official also noted that for land, house, or property purchases that do not involve any change in land extent, the title is updated on the online Patta portal within four hours of registration. This system, implemented in 2023, is also a key reason for the reduction in pendency. "We no longer need to verify such properties again after registration," he said.

Proton e.MAS 7 is now available in Trinidad and Tobago
PETALING JAYA: Proton Holdings Bhd's international sales division (ISD) has launched its first electric vehicle, the Proton 7, in Trinidad and Tobago. The country is the second international market for the model and comes three months after its international debut in Nepal. Launched in Malaysia in December last year, the 7 is already the company's third most popular export model, behind the Proton Saga and Proton X50. Held at the capital city of Port of Spain, the launch event was officiated and witnessed by Ansa Motors Ltd sector head Jean-Marc Mouttet, and Ansa MCAL Ltd new business development general manager Alexander Sabga. Motors is Proton's official distributor in the dual island Caribbean nation. In conjunction with the launch and to better serve its growing EV customer base, Ansa Motors unveiled a new, state-of-the-art EV showroom at The City of Grand Bazaar. The new facility will offer customers to explore its EV lineup, learn about EV technology and receive specialised support. Building on the entry of the Proton X50 and Proton X90 into the Trinidad and Tobago market last year, this launch further reinforces Proton's continuous efforts in global expansion and bringing advanced automotive technology to its export markets. To date, 481 units of Proton vehicles have been exported to the country, which has a population of approximately 1.4 million. These include 271 units of the Proton X50, 141 units of the Proton X90 and 44 units of the Proton Saga. KUALA LUMPUR: Proton International Sales Division (ISD) has officially introduced its first electric vehicle (EV), the Proton 7, in Trinidad and Tobago, marking the Caribbean nation as its second international market for this popular EV model. The 7 was first launched in Malaysia in December last year and is now the third best-selling export model after the Proton Saga and Proton X50. This launch comes just three months after the vehicle's global debut in Nepal. The Proton 7 is available in premium specification and comes with a 5-star new car assessment programme for Southeast Asian countries' safety rating. It accelerates from 0 to 0–100 kilometres per hour in just 7.1 seconds and features a 12-in-1 electric drive unit producing 160 kilowatts and 320 Newton-metres of torque. Powered by a 60.22 kilowatt-hour Aegis Short Blade battery, it boasts a worldwide harmonised light vehicles test procedure rated range of 410 kilometres, making it suitable for long-distance use.

Russia-linked disinfo campaign stokes anti-Ukrainian sentiment in Poland before June 1 vote, investigation finds
Russia-aligned influence campaigns have intensified efforts to spread disinformation targeting Ukrainian refugees in Poland ahead of the country's presidential runoff election on June 1, according to a new investigation by the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD). ISD found that Russia-aligned actors are amplifying anti-Ukrainian sentiment through coordinated campaigns across platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Bluesky, Facebook, and Telegram. These efforts include operations like "Operation Overload" and the pro-Kremlin network "Pravda/Portal Kombat," which use impersonation, AI-generated content, and coordinated amplification to push false narratives. One Operation Overload campaign claimed that Ukrainian refugees were preparing terrorist attacks targeting the Polish elections, garnering over 654,000 views and nearly 5,800 interactions on X. Another falsely accused Ukrainians of plotting attacks on politicians in neighboring countries. The investigation, published on May 30, highlighted that ChatGPT replicated misleading claims from the Pravda network, including accusations that Ukrainians were responsible for a rise in violent crime in Poland. A satirical video about refugees was manipulated by a pro-Kremlin influencer to portray Ukrainians as exploiting Poland's welfare system, sparking calls for deportations and online hate. The influencer's post alone received 161,500 views, 900 shares, and 380 comments, many of which were derogatory. ISD warns that immigration has become a key issue in the Polish election discourse, noting that both remaining presidential candidates have taken positions targeting Ukrainian refugees. Candidate Rafal Trzaskowski proposed halting child benefits for non-working refugees, while Karol Nawrocki suggested placing them last in line for public services. The investigation urges Polish authorities to remain vigilant against Russia-backed disinformation that fuels discrimination and societal division. ISD also calls on platforms to meet their obligations under the EU's Digital Services Act by clearly labeling AI-generated content and addressing systemic risks to electoral integrity. The European Commission is urged to expand enforcement of sanctions on Russian-linked aggregators and to coordinate with internet service providers to counter foreign information manipulation more effectively.
