No plans for former Tipperary convent to house asylum seekers

In a post on social media, Labour Party councillor Michael 'Chicken' Brennan said that there are no plans to house International Protection Applicants (IPAs) in Ballingarry's Old Convent. Cllr Brennan said that following conversations with the owners of the Old Convent, Ballingarry, outside Thurles, he can confirm that the property is not being examined for use as an IPAS centre. The Labour Party councillor also said that there has been no offer of accommodation made, and that the Department of Justice are not examining the property for use. "After talking to the owners yesterday evening of the Old Convent, Ballingarry, Thurles that no offer of accommodation has been received and the Department within IPAS are not examining the property for use,' Cllr Brennan wrote on social media. "I would request people to be calm and not spread misinformation with regard to this premises,' Cllr Brennan added. Two years ago, Tipperary County Council granted planning permission for use as tourist accommodation. The plans at the time gave the green light for seven dwellings made up of a mix of two, three, four and five bedroom houses, with a digital hub proposed for an existing school room while the disused chapel would be converted to a community building. Those plans would also see the old Presentation National school converted to a café and showroom.

Malaysian leaders attend International Paris Air Show, highlight aerospace initiatives

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian representatives were all smiles at the International Paris Air Show (IPAS) 2025, currently being held in Le Bourget, France, from June 16 until 22. Local leaders seen at the largest air show and aerospace-industry exhibition event in the world include Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled bin Nordin, and Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. Amirudin even posted a video on his social media account of the opening ceremony of the Malaysia Pavilion at IPAS 2025. IPAS is held in odd years at Paris–Le Bourget Airport in France and is organised by the French aerospace industry's primary representative body, the Groupement des industries françaises aéronautiques et spatiales (GIFAS). He also shared the launching of Selangor Aero Park (SAP) at IPAS. On his website, he said it was a historic moment for Selangor and the National Aerospace Industry Coordinating Office (Naico), strengthening their joint commitment to developing the aerospace industry workforce through Selangor Aero Park (SAP) @ KLIA Aeropolis. "Our vision for Selangor Aero Park places human capital at the heart of our growth strategy, with initiatives focused on training, research, and future skills development to ensure we build a strong, resilient, and future-ready aerospace workforce. "From the proposed establishment of the Aerospace Talent Centre to national collaboration through MyAERO, this initiative is another bold step towards establishing Selangor as a regional aerospace capital. "Selangor is not only investing in infrastructure, but also in the young talent who will lead the future innovation of the aerospace industry in Malaysia," he said. Located within the KLIA Aeropolis, Malaysia's 100 square kilometre major airport city, SAP offers the potential for growth in aviation, logistics, and high-tech industrial development.

Government buys Citywest Hotel and convention centre for €148m

The hotel will be used for housing international protection applicants. Currently, around 2,300 international protection applicants, as well as Ukrainian refugees, live at Citywest. The Government is also intending to buy a number of other venues around the country to house migrants in up to 14,000 beds. Savings of around 50pc on operation costs will be made as a result of the purchase, according to Migration Minister Colm Brophy. It will take the State four years to recoup the costs. Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan said the Government wants to buy a number of other venues to house migrants around the country. 'In the programme for government, our intention is to own 14,000 accommodation units for applicants of international protection. That will require us to purchase further places around the country,' he said. 'That's going to result in a significant saving over a period. Up to four years, we'll have really reached savings in respect of it. So it's going to be far cheaper in the long term, in terms of owning it, as opposed to the costs we're paying at present per person in the accommodation. Migration Minister Colm Brophy said the numbers of migrants being housed at Citywest will not change. 'We are not changing the overall of what is happening in Citywest at the moment in terms of numbers,' he said. 'Citywest has been working very effectively in terms of having an IPAS centre there, having Ukrainians also present there and having also a range of services and facilities. 'We are not planning on changing those numbers,' he said. A portion of the hotel located in west Dublin - which is the biggest hotel in the country - is already being used by the Government to provide housing for international protection applicants. The current owners of Citywest received €51m from the State for the first nine months of last year for use of the facility. It was recently reported that the Stop Citywest Hotel Purchase residents' group is considering legal action to stop the Government's planned purchase. The Government agreed in March to implement a new system to house international protection applicants, which included the purchase of "medium and large turnkey properties."

MBI Selangor, NAICO to strengthen aerospace talent development via SAP

SHAH ALAM: Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI Selangor) and the National Aerospace Industry Corporation of Malaysia (NAICO) have reaffirmed their commitment to building talent in the aerospace industry through the Selangor Aero Park (SAP) at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Aeropolis. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, in a Facebook post, said the collaboration was formalised yesterday at the International Paris Air Show (IPAS) 2025, taking place from June 16 to 22 at Le Bourget Airport, France. Amirudin said the development of the SAP was carried out jointly by the Selangor government and Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB). 'It aspires to draw high-value investments in maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), aerospace manufacturing, logistics and aviation technology. 'Our vision for SAP is to place human capital at the core of our growth strategy, with initiatives focused on training, research and future skills development,' he said. Amirudin said the initiative marked another bold step towards positioning Selangor as the regional aerospace capital. 'Selangor is not only investing in infrastructure but also in young talents who will drive future innovation in Malaysia's aerospace industry,' he said. Situated within the KLIA Aeropolis – Malaysia's main airport city covering 100 square kilometres – the SAP offers vast potential for growth in aviation, logistics and high-tech industries. Amirudin said SAP was designed to boost investor confidence with a comprehensive ecosystem and market connectivity, supported by the presence of major global aerospace players, including Airbus Helicopters, GE Aviation and Spirit AeroSystems. '(It also features) world-class research, industry-academic collaboration and streamlined investment processes at the federal, state and local levels,' he said. Amirudin was quoted yesterday as saying that SAP would be launched at IPAS 2025, which also featured the signing of Letters of Intent (LOI) between MBI Selangor and NAICO.
