Lochie Hughes Aims To Shave Dennis Hauger's Lead at Road America
INDYCAR Lochie Hughes earned his fifth top-three finish in six INDY NXT by Firestone races this season via his victory June 15 at World Wide Technology Raceway. Andretti Global rookie Hughes halved his deficit from 38 to 19 points to rookie teammate Dennis Hauger, who finished fifth on the 1.25-mile oval. SEE: Event Details Hughes is surging at the right time, and all eyes are on him heading into Road America for Sunday's 20-lap race around the 4.014-mile, 14-turn road course located between Milwaukee and Green Bay in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Here are some storylines to watch for Sunday's race airing at 11 a.m. ET on FS1, the FOX Sports app and the INDYCAR Radio Network. Hughes Keeping Hauger Honest Hughes and Hauger are rookies leading the way in 2025 in the INDYCAR development series. Hauger had a firm grasp on the championship standings via four wins in the opening five races. However, Hughes remains in striking distance thanks to a 2.25 average finish over the last four races, compared to 3.75 from Hauger. Road America could provide another thrilling battle between the duo. Hughes has four wins in five junior category starts at the track, all coming in succession. He won the second race of the 2023 USF 2000 Championship, then swept the USF Pro 2000 series tripleheader at Road America last season. Formula 2 veteran Hauger has never been to the track, but many mention the circuit is reminiscent of a European road course, which could help the 22-year-old contend for his fifth victory of 2025. Road America Winner Often Becomes INDYCAR SERIES Mainstay Road America has a reputation for spotlighting future INDYCAR SERIES stars. Based on recent history, winning at Road America doesn't guarantee a championship, but it does validate elite talent. The winners' list since 2018 includes names of current drivers in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, including Colton Herta (2018 winner), Rinus VeeKay (2019), Kyle Kirkwood and David Malukas (2021), Christian Rasmussen (2022) and Nolan Siegel (2023). Can HMD Motorsports Halt Andretti Global Domination? Andretti Global is 6-for-6 in INDY NXT by Firestone races this season, with Hauger winning four times and Hughes twice. Dating to Race 2 of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course weekend in 2024, the team has 15 wins in the last 17 series races. At Road America, the team finished 1-2 last year via Jamie Chadwick's maiden victory. She beat eventual champion and teammate Louis Foster. The level of control is impressive, but not impenetrable – especially at Road America, where HMD Motorsports has matched Andretti win-for-win over the last four races. Andretti Global has three wins in its last eight Road America starts compared to HMD scoring three in the last four. Does that open the door for second-year HMD Motorsports driver Caio Collet? The Brazilian earned his first oval pole last weekend at WWTR and led 58 of the first 61 laps before fading to third in the closing laps. He remains third in the standings but gained five points on Hauger, trailing by 79. Collet is heating up with four podiums this season, three coming in the last four races. He has a sixth-place average finish in 11 natural road course starts, which includes four top-two results. Collet finished fifth as a rookie at Road America last year. His teammate Josh Pierson is having a career year and could be a surprise contender this weekend. Pierson is sixth in points with four top-six finishes in the last five races. The 19-year-old Oregon native finished a career-best fourth June 1 on the streets of Detroit. Does Andretti remain perfect in 2025, or can a well-timed HMD victory break the streak? Rowe, De Alba Showing Strong Consistency The Hughes and Hauger show has grabbed most of the INDY NXT by Firestone headlines. But there's a cluster of talented drivers quietly stacking results and building momentum. If any of them catch fire over the next few rounds, the title race could become much hotter. In addition to Collet, Myles Rowe has arguably been the one of the most consistent drivers outside of Andretti Global with five top-four finishes in six starts this season for ABEL Motorsports, including three podiums in the last four. He gained seven points on Hauger at WWTR by finishing runner-up and is 88 points back in the standings. Rowe has enjoyed success at Road America on multiple rungs in the junior categories. Rowe finished runner-up in both USF2000 races at Road America in 2022, and second and fourth in USF Pro 2000 in 2023. Andretti Global driver Salvador de Alba isn't displaying flashy numbers like his rookie teammates, but he's delivering steady results with four top-five finishes in six races, including three in the last four. He finished 21st at Road America last year. Nolan Siegel Apologizes For Profanity-Laced Outburst After Penalty
Nolan Siegel apologized for a profanity-laced outburst on his in-car radio Sunday night that was critical of a penalty issued to him by race officials. During the race at World Wide Technology Raceway, Siegel was penalized with a drive-through penalty for blocking when being lapped by Scott McLaughlin, who had turned Siegel in the previous race at Detroit. Siegel was not happy with the penalty, telling his team over the radio: "[Expletive] that [expletive]. Tell Penske to go [expletive] themselves. I want you to talk to them about that penalty. That's [expletive] [expletive]." McLaughlin drives for Team Penske, and Penske Entertainment operates the racing series. "I had an outburst on the radio that should not have happened," Siegel said Wednesday on his Instagram story. "So I just want to apologize to everyone at Arrow McLaren, everyone on [my No.] 6 car, all of our partners, all of our fans that are here to support us. "That was not a proud moment for me. It is something that I regret. And it was a mistake. I have a lot of respect for Scott, for Team Penske and everyone at INDYCAR that are doing their jobs to the best of their ability and doing a really good job." McLaughlin posted on X that he and Siegel "had a good chat after the race." Siegel finished 19th in the race and sits 21st in the series standings. "It's a pressure cooker in INDYCAR," Siegel said. "It's an extremely stressful situation. It was frustrating. I let that get to me when I shouldn't have. I'm human. I make mistakes." Arrow McLaren put out a statement saying team executives had talked to Siegel. "At Arrow McLaren, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of professionalism, respect and sportsmanship -- on and off the track," the statement said. "The language expressed over our radio during this past race weekend does not reflect who we are as a team. "We do not condone that behavior. We've addressed it directly with Nolan, and he is taking responsibility for his actions. Accountability is a core value at Arrow McLaren, and we expect every team member to represent our partners, fans and organization with integrity." The team also asked for civility on social media. "We expect our fans and online community to act with respect and civility, and we will not tolerate hate, abuse or discrimination within our social media platforms," the team statement said. Josef Newgarden flips but OK after wild INDYCAR wreck
MADISON, Ill. — Josef Newgarden was not seriously injured after his car went upside-down and skidded along the surface Sunday night at World Wide Technology Raceway. Newgarden t-boned Louis Foster, whose car was spinning and sliding down the track after an accident. Pinched up next to the inside wall, Newgarden's car launched in the air and then skidded on its car. Both drivers were seen and released from the infield medical center. Hard accidents are not rare for the 1.25-mile oval, commonly known as Gateway, located outside of St. Louis. Foster said he had been getting up in the marbles — pellets of tire rubber that accumulate on the track and can cause the car to lose traction — and just got in there one time too many. "Just got a bit too high on to the dark stuff. I had a wiggle and then I just got into the marbles and was a complete passenger," Foster said. "At that point [I hit the wall], I bent my toe link. Josef Newgarden Wastes No Time Climbing to Top in WWTR Practice
INDYCAR Josef Newgarden continued Saturday to show why World Wide Technology Raceway might be his ultimate playground in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. Newgarden led the rain-delayed opening practice for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline with a top lap of 178.243 mph in the No. 2 PPG Team Penske Chevrolet. Two-time series champion Newgarden has five career victories in nine starts on the 1.25-mile oval just east of St. Louis in Madison, Illinois. SEE: Practice Results 'So far, so good,' Newgarden said. 'I think we'll have a tight battle with a lot of people. It's hard to win these days with how good the competition is. We're working hard for it. Let's get through qualifying first and see how the car is tomorrow night.' Up next today is NTT P1 Award qualifying at 5:30 p.m. ET, followed by a 60-minute final practice starting at 8:15 p.m. ET. Both sessions will be broadcast live on FS2, the FOX Sports app and the INDYCAR Radio Network. The 260-lap race starts at 8 p.m. ET Sunday (FOX, FOX Sports app, INDYCAR Radio Network). Team Penske, which has nine INDYCAR SERIES victories at this track, took the top two spots in the 60-minute session, which started 2.5 hours late due to morning showers. Scott McLaughlin, who has won the pole for the last two races at this track, was second at 178.149 in the No. 3 DEX Imaging Team Penske Chevrolet. David Malukas continued his strong form at WWTR by ending up third at 177.856 in the No. 4 Clarience Technologies Chevrolet of A.J. Foyt Enterprises. Two of Malukas' three career top-three finishes have occurred at this egg-shaped track on the east bank of the Mississippi River. Championship leader Alex Palou was fourth at 177.516 in the No. 10 Ridgeline Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. Palou leads second-place Pato O'Ward of Arrow McLaren by 90 points after winning five of the first seven races of the season. O'Ward rounded out the top five at 177.492 in the No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet.
