2025 IMSA Watkins Glen starting lineup: Acura takes second consecutive pole with No. 93
With a new face behind the wheel, Acura Meyer Shank Racing captured its second consecutive pole position in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship series with a record-setting performance at Watkins Glen International. Renger van der Zande turned a lap of 1 minute, 31.558 seconds in the No. 93 ARX-06, setting a new mark on the 11-turn, 3.4-mile road course in the Grand Touring Prototype category. Three weeks ago on the streets of Detroit, van der Zande took the checkered flag in the Acura MSR No. 93 after teammate Nick Yelloly had qualified on the pole position. 'Winning Detroit always helps take the weight off the shoulders of the whole team, the program,' van der Zande told NBC Sports' Dave Burns on Peacock after his first pole position since the 2018 Rolex 24 at Daytona. 'The Porsches are way ahead in the championship, and it's hard to beat them over the championship, so let's win some races, and this is a good start. We have a strong car in high-speed stuff like this. That was a very clean lap, and I was enjoying it a lot.' Nate Ryan, Yelloly, who won in the LMP2 category of the 24 Hours of Le Mans last week, and van der Zande will be joined by Kakunoshin 'Kaku' Ohta in Sunday's third endurance race of the IMSA season. Jack Aitken qualified second (1:31.845) in the No. 31 Cadillac, followed by Colin Braun (1:32.167) in Meyer Shank Racing's No. 60 Acura ARX-06. It was a disappointing showing for Porsche Penske Motorsport, which won the first four races of the season. Mathieu Jaminet qualified eighth (1:33.323) in the No. 6 963, and Felipe Nasr (1:33.533) will start 10th in the No. 963 that leads the championship standings. In addition to live coverage of the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race, throughout the weekend Peacock will exclusively present live coverage of the Porsche Carrera Cup, Lamborghini Super Trofeo, and Michelin Pilot Challenge races, in addition to WeatherTech qualifying. The 11-turn, 3.45-mile track in Upstate New York will feature all four classes racing at the same time in this endurance competition that marks the halfway point of the 2025 season. In what has been a fairly close points battle thus far, only two points separate the LMP2 leaders, 11 in GTD PRO, 70 in GTP and 124 in GTD heading into this weekend's race. In the GTP class, the No. 6 Porsche team of Mathieu Jaminet and Matt Campbell are the only GTP entry to make the podium in all five races to start the season. NBC Sports' Leigh Diffey will call the action alongside former drivers Calvin Fish and Brian Till. Dave Burns, Matt Yocum, and Chris Wilner will serve as pit reporters. Aston Martin Valkyrie LM lets you live your Le Mans fantasies
Aston Martin has introduced the Valkyrie LM, a limited-run, track-only hypercar developed as a tribute to the brand's return to top level endurance racing Derived from the Valkyrie Hypercar competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the Valkyrie LM version is closely aligned with the race car – minus the regulatory constraints required for competition – that will take part in this week's 24 Hours of Le Mans. At its core is the same Cosworth-built, naturally aspirated 6.5l V12 engine, producing 520kW, the maximum allowed under race regulations. However, the Valkyrie LM has been tuned for private track use. It drops features such as FIA-mandated electronics, homologation hardware and race ballast. Power delivery systems are simplified for ease of use and the engine has been recalibrated to accept readily available fuel. Designed to be more accessible to amateur and gentleman drivers, the Valkyrie LM uses a seven-speed sequential transmission operated via paddle shifters and features a race-derived suspension setup – with double wishbones front and rear, and pushrod-actuated torsion bar springs paired with adjustable dampers. Tyres are sourced direct from Pirelli. The cockpit prioritises safety, access and visibility. Highlights include a fixed carbon-fibre seat with integrated support padding, a FIA 8853 six-point racing harness and a fire suppression system. The steering wheel incorporates a driver display and shift lights, as seen in the race car. Aston Martin confirmed only 10 examples of the Valkyrie LM will be built. On purchase each customer will have access to a tailored ownership programme designed to support them on and off the track. Known as the Valkyrie LM Performance Club, the initiative includes full technical support, driver coaching and logistics. Aston Martin will store, transport and maintain each Valkyrie LM enrolled in the programme. Track preparation, simulator training, data analysis and on-site engineering support are all part of the package. Drivers will also receive a complete kit – helmet, Hans device, suit, boots, moulded earpieces, gloves and fireproof underwear – along with classroom sessions and guided track walks led by professional instructors. Deliveries of the Valkyrie LM are scheduled to begin before the programme's launch in the second quarter of 2026.

Bobby Rahal is getting using to his BMW 8 Hybrid V8 cars being at the forefront of IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship races this season. So it's fitting the U.S. auto racing legend will kick things off for the Monterey SportsCar Championship on Sunday, May 11. Advertisement Rahal will be the grand marshal for the fourth round of the IMSA season, giving the command to start engines for two-hour, 40-minute race (3 p.m. ET, NBC and Peacock) around the historic road course on the Montnerey Peninsula. "It's a great honor and privilege to be the grand marshal at obviously what is one of my favorite tracks," said Rahal, who made his Laguna Seca debut in 1976 with a Formula Atlantic race. "There's been a lot of success here, both as a driver and as an owner. It's a real thrill to have part of the racetrack named after you. Going out to Laguna, one of the crown jewels really of American road racing circuits, it was a thrill then, and it's a thrill even today." IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship The straightaway at Laguna Seca leading to its famous Corkscrew turn was renamed more than a decade ago in honor of Rahal, who will be at the track on multiple race weekends in 2025 with his IndyCar and IMSA teams. Advertisement It's been a swift start for the No. 24 BMW M Team RLL M Hybrid V8, which has won the Grand Touring Prototype pole position in three consectuive races with driver Dries Vanthoor to start the 2025 season. After lagging through the first two years of IMSA's revamped premier hybirid prototype category, Rahal's cars have improved in a critical season. But some driver, team and tactical errors have contributed to an absence from vcitory lane as the Porsche Penske Motorsport No. 7 963 has swept the first three races. "Unfortunately, we haven't been able quite put it all together," said Rahal, who hinted the BMW teams have tweaked their pit stops for Laguna Seca. "Come race day, we've had on-track, but lapped traffic at Daytona and Sebring hurt our chances at the end of the race. Looking at Long Beach, we got held up in the pits a little bit and that's all it took, I'm afraid. "So, we've got to hopefully complete the job this time around. We were pretty quick there last year, so we have a reasonable chance. ... We've learned more about the car this year. The Laguna track, especially since they repaved it (in 2023), that's kind of come into our wheelhouse a bit." There is a sense of urgency for Rahal, whose sports car teams have been racing BMWs in GT and prototype classes since 2008. It's a contract year for RLL with the German manufacturer, and multiple outlets have reported that BMW has been considering options with other teams for 2026. "I don't want to get into the specifics of that, but we're obviously hoping to continue this long relationship that we've had with BMW that's dated back to 2008," Rahal said. "I know you see some of these articles and a lot of guessing and a lot of speculation, but there's three quarters of the season left. For us and BMW Motorsport, it's the same thing. "We go win some races, and that solves a lot of problems. So that's what we're intending to do." But the competition is very stiff in IMSA's top class, which will feature 11 entries and five manufacturers at Laguna Seca. Acura, Cadillac and Aston Martin will be battling BMW to detrhone the unbeaten Porsche. "It speaks volumes about IMSA the number of manufacturers that are involved in all classes," Rahal said. "It's phenomenal how many of all types are involved in in sports car racing and IMSA today compared to years ago. And the complexity of these cars is, in some respects, they may be more complex than a Formula 1 car. It's just at a different level. Advertisement "I think the GTP category but IMSA as a whole is just in a phenomenal place right now, and we haven't seen anything like this maybe ever."
