QS World Rankings 2026: IIT-Hyderabad, UoH, Osmania among top 50 Indian institutes; IIIT-Hyderabad, NIT-Warangal miss the list

Three Telangana institutions, IITH, UoH, and OU, have secured positions within the top 50 Indian institutions in the QS World University Rankings 2026. IITH improved its global ranking, while UoH and OU maintained their positions. Three premier institutes from Telangana — Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH), University of Hyderabad, and Osmania University — have featured in the top 50 Indian institutions in the QS World University Rankings 2026, released on Thursday. A total of 54 institutes from the country made it to the list this year. Among them, IITH ranked 17th in India, while UoH stood at 28 and OU at 46. Globally, IITH improved its position to 664 from last year's 681–690 band. UoH and OU retained their previous positions in the 801–850 and 1201–1400 brackets, respectively. 'Many rankings, including the QS World, give weightage to perception and Internationalisation -- area where our universities often fall short,' said professor Chandra Shekhar Sharma of IIT. Officials from city-based institutions acknowledged the growing competitiveness. 'We are putting in effort to improve our rankings. This healthy competition is raising education standards. At UoH, we're focusing on research, publications, admissions, and improving perception. We hope to see results in the coming years,' said a senior UoH administrator. Notably, several institutes, including IIIT-Hyderabad, NIT-Warangal and JNTU-Hyderabad failed to make it to the rankings. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like เทรดทองCFDsกับโบรกเกอร์ที่เชื่อถือได้| เปิดบัญชีวันนี้ IC Markets สมัคร Undo Explaining the gap, Telangana State Council of Higher Education chairman V Balakista Reddy said, 'Only one of our state universities made the cut because we lack a strong research culture. We are taking measures to build it. Faculty now have access to international journals, and we're working to secure more national and international research projects. Improvements are underway to help more universities qualify in the future.' The 2026 QS rankings assessed 1,501 universities across 106 countries. Over 19.8 million research papers published between 2019 and 2023, with 200 million citations, were evaluated along with insights from 15 lakh academics and five lakh employers. Institutions were ranked on parameters such as academic reputation, faculty citations, employment outcomes, faculty-student ratio, internationalisation, and sustainability.

Institutes failing anti-ragging norms to face UGC fund cuts

Hyderabad: Seven institutes from Telangana, including the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IITH), the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Hyderabad, and Potti Sri Ramulu Telugu University, Hyderabad, may face funding cuts as they failed to submit the mandatory anti-ragging compliance forms by students and staff to the (UGC), despite multiple advisories. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to UGC norms, failure to comply with the UGC Regulation on Ragging, 2009, may result in the withdrawal of UGC grants and funding, thereby affecting financial assistance and research projects. It could also lead to public disclosure of non-compliance, listing the institution as non-compliant on the UGC website, and consideration for de-recognition or withdrawal of affiliation, subject to further review. Show cause issued The other institutions from the state that received show cause notices include Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies, Aurora Higher Education and Research Academy, Malla Reddy Vishwavidyapeeth, and MNR University. Nationwide, a total of 89 institutions were issued notices. "It has come to the attention of the University Grants Commission (UGC) that your institution failed to submit the mandatory anti-ragging undertakings by students and compliance undertaking by your institution, despite multiple advisories issued by the UGC, follow-up calls from the anti-ragging helpline, and direct interventions by the anti-ragging monitoring agency," read the show cause notice issued by the commission. The notice further stated that failure to comply not only breaches UGC guidelines but also compromises student safety, particularly given growing concerns over ragging-related distress and campus hostility. 30 days deadline The institutions were instructed to submit the anti-ragging compliance forms and obtain online undertakings from all students within 30 days from the date of the notice, June 9, and to provide a comprehensive report on measures adopted to prevent ragging on their campuses.

IIT-H, Japan company SSIC successfully test Beyond 5G, 6G wireless technologies

Hyderabad: Japan's Sharp Semiconductor Innovation Corporation (SSIC), the Indian Institute of Technology-Hyderabad (IIT-H), and Private Limited — a start-up incubated at IIT-H — successfully tested cutting-edge (B5G) and 6G (B6G) technologies. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The trials proved that SSIC's flexible communication device, a special chip — Software-Defined Radio (SDR) System-on-Chip (SoC) that can support different wireless technologies, worked smoothly with WiSig's advanced mobile network system. Together, they delivered wireless performance similar to what today's best 5G networks offer. By 2026, the collaboration aims to support advanced applications such as Fixed Wireless Access, Mission-Critical Push-to-Talk, V2X autonomous navigation, and satellite-compatible NB-IoT smart metering. "This initiative bridges academic excellence, industrial innovation, and international collaboration efforts, reinforcing the global partnership of India and Japan in next-generation wireless communications," said WiSig Networks founder & IITH department of electrical engineering professor Kiran Kuchi. Toyofumi Horikawa from SSIC expressed enthusiasm about the partnership's outcomes. "The results from tests and experiments carried out at the IITH campus demonstrate the immense potential of customizable SDR SoC platforms in accelerating the development of future wireless technologies," he said. "SSIC also exhibited its advanced SDR technology at the Mobile World Congress (MWC25) in Barcelona. In 2026, we plan to further expand this collaboration for advanced communication protocol testing. " IITH director BS Murty said that this partnership underscores the institute's commitment to fostering international collaboration and driving innovation in wireless communication technologies, placing IITH at the forefront of technological breakthroughs. They said that this Indo-Japanese collaboration exemplifies the potential for international partnerships to shape global standards and drive innovation in next-generation wireless communications.
