Wednesday Fiesta shines spotlight on Indian arts, culture, sporting excellence

Tribune News Network Doha As part of its ongoing mission to foster cultural pride and community spirit, the Indian Cultural Centre (ICC), under the aegis of the Embassy of India, Qatar, successfully hosted another vibrant edition of its weekly cultural series, 'ICC Wednesday Fiesta', on Wednesday, 11th June 2025, at the ICC Ashoka Hall. Designed to be a dynamic celebration of Indian arts and culture, the event featured a captivating line-up of performances by artists from various ICC affiliated organisations (AOs) and arts centres operating in Qatar. The stage came alive with colourful displays of classical, folk, and contemporary art forms, showcasing the diversity and richness of India's cultural tapestry. The evening began with a warm welcome address delivered by Ravindra Prasad, ICC head of affiliation, who extended greetings to the distinguished guests and members of the Indian community. This was followed by the presidential address from ICC President AP Manikantan, who lauded the consistent efforts of ICC and its affiliates in nurturing and promoting Indian heritage through regular cultural programming. A special highlight of the event was the felicitation of three exceptional Indian athletes from Qatar —Saji Sreekumaran, Shyam Sivaji, and Navas Muhammad — who recently brought laurels to the Indian expatriate community by winning bronze medals in the Men's 35+ Handball category at the World Masters Games held in Taipei, Taiwan. Their achievement was acknowledged with great pride and applause, marking the intersection of cultural celebration and sportingachievement. The evening's programme concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Venkappa Bhagavatula, ICC head of in-house activities, who expressed gratitude to all performers, volunteers, and attendees for making the event a resounding success. The Indian Cultural Centre (ICC), under the aegis of the Embassy of India, celebrated Environment Day with a special edition of its weekly cultural evening 'ICC Wednesday Fiesta' on June 4 at Ashoka Hall. The evening was marked by a series of vibrant performances curated by various ICC-affiliated organisations and arts centres from across Qatar, offering a rich tapestry of Indian arts and culture. The programme began with a warm welcome from Biswajit Banerji, head of finance at ICC, who set the tone for the evening. Opening remarks were delivered by Nandini Abbagouni, head of cultural activities, who underscored the significance of environmental awareness. Following this, ICC President AP Manikantan gave the presidential address, reflecting on the confluence of cultural celebration and global environmental consciousness. A highlight of the evening was the felicitation ceremony. Former ICC General Secretary, Divakar Poojary was honoured for his outstanding service to the Indian community in Qatar. This occasion also saw Ravi Shetty, president of Karnataka Sangha Qatar, and Lalit Pandey, president of the North Indian Association, being recognised for their invaluable contributions to ICC-affiliated organisations. Graced by a large gathering of dignitaries, ICC Managing Committee members, affiliated organisation representatives, and cultural enthusiasts, the evening was a celebration of unity in diversity, featuring dazzling performances by artistes from various ICC-affiliated organisations (AOs) and reputed arts centres in Qatar. From classical dance to contemporary folk, the stage came alive with vibrant displays of India's cultural heritage. The programme began with a warm welcome extended by ICC Head of HR, Admin & Consular, Rakesh Wagh, who greeted the attendees and invited them to immerse in the spirit of cultural camaraderie. This was followed by insightful opening remarks from Nandini Abbagouni, ICC Head of Cultural Activities, who emphasised the importance of such weekly platforms in nurturing talent and fostering intercultural dialogue among the Indian diaspora. Delivering the presidential address, ICC President AP Manikantan reflected on ICC's evolving role as a hub of cultural excellence and community engagement.
