Grant for high-tech workers to further skills
GEORGE TOWN: Workers in the advanced technology sector can now benefit from a grant to further develop their skill at any learning institutions of their choice, says Human Resources Minister Steven Sim ( pic ). He said the matching grant was a collaboration of the Human Resource Development (HRD) Corporation and the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) under the Advanced Technology Meister Programme. 'Through the initiative, employers can jointly develop training programmes with their chosen learning institutions, supported by funding from HRD Corp through the levy system and NCIA under the 12th Malaysia Plan. 'If a company wishes to develop their manpower skills, they may not only utilise the levy from HRD Corp but also use grants from NCIA to increase the allocation amount. 'This effort reflects our commitment to building a highly skilled workforce and achieving the national target of 30% skilled workers by 2030,' Sim told reporters after launching the northern region National Training Week (NTW) 2025 Learning Tour in Bayan Lepas yesterday. Some 420 families of fishermen affected by the Silicon Island development project will also receive training to improve their career opportunities. 'The Training and Skills Enhancement Programme for families of fishermen and local communities is under the Focused Impact Training Initiative. 'A total of 420 participants from the community will receive training in various areas, including coxswain courses, site safety supervision, computer courses and safety officer certification. 'We want to ensure that families of fishermen are not left out of economic progress resulting from the Silicon Island development project by helping them secure high-impact employment opportunities, improve their income levels and uplift their socio-economic status,' he said. Themed 'Learning Beyond Borders', he added that the NTW programme has recorded over 3.2 million enrolment, exceeding its initial target of one million. He said the northern region alone has recorded more than 167,000 enrolment with almost 800 courses across Penang, Kedah and Perlis. Separately, Sim confirmed that discussions were being finalised for the ministry to work with the Penang government to develop the Penang Chip Design Academy in Bayan Lepas. 'This is a state government project and we are in discussion to finalise the collaboration between the ministry and the academy. 'As it specialises in developing the semiconductor and high-tech sector in Penang, we wish to add value and collaborate to upgrade the skills training programmes.'

Free coaching in JEE, NEET to students in government junior colleges in Andhra Pradesh
The State government has planned to roll out targeted support systems, including mentorship and quality coaching, to encourage students from economically weaker sections in government junior colleges to excel in national-level competitive exams. As part of the move, students pursuing MBC and BiPC courses in 1,355 government junior colleges in the State will receive coaching and quality preparation material to prepare for national-level competitive exams like Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), an all-India level entrance exam for engineering courses in India, and National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admissions into medical colleges. Officials in the Department of Higher Education said the free study material on subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics being given to students has been prepared by a team of subject experts drawn from both government and private colleges over a period of six months. To ensure that students benefit from the coaching classes, their college timings have been extended from the usual 9.30 a.m-4 p.m. to 9 a.m-5 p.m. Junior lecturers have been trained to teach the content effectively to students. Weekly tests, performance reviews and tracking the regular progress of students is mandatory for constant and effective monitoring of the learners' performance. 'The initiative is about giving every student a chance to succeed, regardless of their family background. We are creating an environment where every child can dream big and prepare confidently for national-level competitive exams,' said Minister for Human Resource Development (HRD) Nara Lokesh. He said the initiative will benefit over 1 lakh students in the government sector and will help the government bridge the gap between private and government education systems. He said the objective was to create a level playing field and give equal opportunity to all children to hone their skills.

Anwar: Private preschools to universities exempt from education levy for one year from Jan 1
KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 — The government is waiving education levy payments for all private learning institutions for one year, starting January 1, 2026. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the move aims to reduce the financial burden faced by these institutions, New Straits Times reported today. 'This is to allow these institutions to improve their resources and learning materials. 'We want to ensure that our children receive the best possible training because that is the key to success,' he was quoted as saying during the launch of National Training Week 2025 at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium grounds here. He said the exemption will cover all levels, including preschools, primary and secondary schools, vocational colleges, and institutions of higher learning. Anwar said the decision was made after taking into account feedback from education and training institutions. He said many had appealed to the government for support to ease operational pressures. Anwar directed the secretaries-general of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Human Resources to monitor the institutions and ensure their service remains top notch after the exemption. Employers are required to pay a levy to the Human Resource Development Corporation, an agency under the Ministry of Human Resources, for training and skills development under the Human Resources Development Act 2001 (Act 612).
