Exclusive: Anupam Kher says Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge wouldn't work if released in 2025

Earlier, there was a certain kashish (appeal), a longing in romance.'Recalling the old days of cinema, he added, 'In those times, we never used to speak directly. Falling in love took time. Even going to bed with someone wasn't immediate—first love, then marriage, then sex. Now it's like, fall in love today, and have sex the next day. There's nothing wrong with it, I'm not judging. But that's how it's shown now.' Kher expressed his yearning for romantic films, 'I'm longing to see a love story where there's a certain amount of kashish. That's why I felt Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was such a beautiful romantic film — Sanjay Leela Bhansali captured that essence so well. If you make an old-school love story now, maybe only a few people will go watch it.'When asked if 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' released for the first time in 2025, would it have worked Anupam said, " No, I don't think it would. Today, it works because of its nostalgic value. But if it were made for the first time now, it wouldn't have had the same impact. Just like Gone with the Wind — if it were made today, it wouldn't resonate the same way. Times have changed, life has changed. Back then, in the late '90s and earlier, we had stories of couples eloping. But DDLJ was the first time when the hero said, 'I will convince your father. Only then will we marry.' That was new. The father tells his son, 'You failed in London? Good. We've all failed in India too.' These were fresh, grounded characters. Now, things are different."And yet, he believes love as an emotion has endured — it's just the expressions that have shifted. While the movie had a twist, a man in Uttar Pradesh became successful in his plans. In a village in Jaunpur, a man named Arvind helped his wife marry her lover after she had refused to end their relationship even after marriage. Arvind married Rita two years ago. However, she continued to stay in touch with her boyfriend, Yashwant. Eventually, Rita returned to her parents' home and eloped with Yashwant. After learning about the affair and Rita's refusal to return, Arvind chose to end the marriage peacefully. He arranged her wedding to Yashwant at a Durga temple in the local market. Photos and videos that went viral show Arvind standing with the couple and blessing them. He even helped with the wedding rituals. 'This asli mard marched her to a temple, handed Yashwant the sindoor, and said, Bhai, ab tu hi sambhal! Yashwant filled Rita's maang right there, and Arvind walked away like a legend,' wrote one social media user while sharing the video. Social media users did not miss the chance to refer to various recent reports of men suffering from marriage. 'He escaped from 498A and paying alimony,' wrote one user while another commented, 'It's not sacrificing, it's rationality.' 'Arvind turned betrayal into a bold handover, no drama, just full-on blockbuster exit,' commented another user. 'It is a wise move. Instead of finding him in the blue drum by the police, he has taken the right decision,' wrote another. One user remarked, 'Obviously Arvind did not want a snake in the marriage and got rid of her before she spread he venom in his family.' The sarcastic comments about Arvind saving his life are likely related to the recent Meghalaya murder. In May, Raja Raghuvanshi was murdered during his honeymoon in Meghalaya. His wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, allegedly plotted the killing with her lover, Raj Kushwaha. The Indore businessman's body was found on June 2 in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls. Sonam allegedly hired three contract killers. She fled but was arrested on June 9 in Ghazipur. Five accused are now in custody.

As 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' completed 26 years of release on June 18, filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali said there was love in the air on the sets of the film. The director was speaking in an interview when he mentioned the magic of chemistry in the Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan starrer, who were believed to be dating each other at the time of filming. He also spoke about the possibility of a an interview with ETimes, the 62-year-old answered a question about the chemistry between Khan and Rai. Without focussing on them in his answer, Bhansali agreed that there was "love in the air", but, "not just between them; there was a lot of affection amongst all of us."He took other names and shared, "Zohra Sehgalji, Helen Aunty, Salman, Aishwarya, Vikram Gokhale, Smita Jayekar, we were like one big family." The film-maker called 'HDDCS' the most 'fulfilling experience' of shooting in his entire career. Bhansali further spoke about the possibility of a remake of 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam'. He mentioned his debut film, 'Khamoshi: The Musical (YEAR), and shared that he would never make any remakes of his other films. However, he expressed his desire to work with Rai again.
