Has Trump been taking inspiration from the royals?
One of the objections to the military parade in Washington, DC last Saturday – supposedly to mark the 250th birthday of the US Army – is that it was a breach of democratic norms. The real reason it took place, say Donald Trump's critics, was because he wanted to celebrate his 79th birthday with a display of military might – which is 'what dictators do', according to a general who advised him against it. Trump's opponents gleefully pointed out that the number of attendees – around 200,000 – was dwarfed by the millions who took part in simultaneous 'No Kings' protests in dozens of American cities, a reference to his habit of describing himself as a 'King'. The theme of the coverage in the left-wing media was that this vainglorious spectacle revealed Trump's megalomaniacal desire to appoint himself president for life, which risks turning the US into a banana republic. Yet I spent Saturday at the Trooping the Colour, the annual display of Britain's military prowess that takes place on the monarch's official birthday and which was surely the inspiration for Trump's parade. OK, there were no tanks, unlike in Washington, but some of the guardsmen were carrying guns and several antique cannons trundled past, pulled by horses. In the UK, the Trooping the Colour is not generally seen as a symbol of our having become a 'dictatorship' or a sign that democratic norms have been abandoned. On the contrary, it's a charming bit of military pageantry which conjures up an image of a unified, stable constitutional monarchy. Perhaps the mistake Trump made was not copying the original more faithfully. He had bleachers set up all along the parade route so members of the public could watch, allowing his mean-spirited critics to point out how sparsely attended it was. At our version, the only stadium seating was in Horse Guards Parade and it was packed to the gills with people who'd paid for the privilege, such as Caroline and me. (I bought two tickets, having won the right to do so in a House of Lords ballot.) The reaction of the crowd was exactly what Trump would have wanted: people oohing and aahing at the beautiful horses, leaping to their feet whenever the national anthem was played and cheering as the King and Queen arrived in a horse-drawn carriage. Come to think of it, that's exactly how the President and First Lady should have made their entrance. Admittedly, there were some demonstrators waving 'Not My King' flags – would they prefer President Starmer to be our head of state? – but their pipsqueak protest was drowned out by the lusty cheers of people thronging the Mall to watch the Red Arrows, a sight that would have warmed Trump's heart. Maybe the President's staff were looking on in envy and realising that the secret of a well-attended parade is limiting it to a smaller footprint. Another advantage of holding a ceremony like this in a square is that the monarch – whether real or pretend – can inspect the troops. King Charles did it on foot this year, just as he did last year, but before he was diagnosed with cancer he inspected them from on top of a splendid black stallion, which is surely something that would appeal to Trump. Or, if he's not comfortable on horseback, he could do it from a golf cart. If the President intends to repeat the idea next year, possibly on 4 July to mark the 250th anniversary of the Republic, he might think about hiring the UK's ceremonial operations planning team, which is responsible for organising all major state military parades in the capital and consists of just five senior officers. Anyone contrasting the two events couldn't help noticing how shambolic the American version was, with soldiers ambling along the route looking slightly bemused. I spotted a drone operator holding a drone above his head, looking for all the world like a ten-year-old boy pretending to fly a toy plane. I'm not sure that's going to strike the fear of God into the People's Liberation Army. It also didn't help that Trump asked several of his favourite companies – Palantir, Coinbase, Oracle – to display their logos, which made them look like sponsors at a football game. I daresay his aides had to talk him out of a half-time show featuring the Village People. In one respect, though, it might be better if the Yanks didn't take a leaf out of our book. King Charles and Prince William were dressed in Coldstream Guards uniforms, complete with medals. I don't think it would have enhanced Trump's authority or added to the dignity of the occasion if he and Barron had turned up in full military regalia.

Kate Middleton 'snubbed Queen Camilla's stern pep talk' at Trooping the Colour
Kate Middleton did not want to get involved, according to one expert. Trooping the Colour took place at the weekend, with royal fans delighted to see Kate Middleton back in the fold for the annual event. The Princess of Wales was forced to miss last year's ceremony to celebrate King Charles' 76th birthday as she focused on her recovery from cancer. On November 14 each year, King Charles marks his birthday privately, but each year in June he marks his "official" birthday with the military spectacle where the most prestigious regiments in the British Army honour the monarch by parading for the special day. Kate was back to join in the celebrations on Saturday as she continues to return to official royal working life. She was cheered along with her children, Princess Charlotte, Prince George and Prince Louis, as they followed the King and Queen in a carriage and made their way from Buckingham Palace, down the Mall, to Horse Guards Parade. It was a full house for 'the Firm' as Kate and her children were joined by Prince William, Princess Anne and Prince Edward, who followed the procession on horseback, as delighted crowds looked on. A couple of years back, Kate reportedly made a swift head-turning gesture to Queen Camilla during the historical event, according to a body language expert, as we previously reported. The monarch appeared to struggle as the horse he was riding that year became excitable, and according to body language expert Judi James, Camilla was on the sidelines to try and provide support. However, the princess steered clear. She explained: "Trooping the Colour might have been slightly marred by the rather frisky horse that Charles seemed to be struggling with and which meant he rarely achieved the same kind of formal mounted pose that his son and siblings achieved riding behind him to the parade ground. "While William and Edward sat bolt upright on their very calm horses, with right arms rigid at their sides, Charles frequently needed two hands on the reins and a series of pats that increased in intensity as his horse needed steering and correcting throughout the ride to the parade ground. "The King seemed to be complaining again to Camilla once he arrived beside the rostrum where she was standing, meaning instead of offering a smile of pride and support her body language suggested she was giving a rather stern-looking pep-talk than involved frowning and some firm-looking head baton nods. "Kate took one glance at the conversation and turned her head away, clearly not wanting to get involved." That same year, Judi also noted a change with William and Kate's cheeky son Prince Louis but said he still remained his excitable self thanks to his mum. She explained: "With Louis now dressed exactly like George, it is obvious that his behaviour is also getting more grown-up and less playful but there were several signs that, with the encouragement of Kate, he is still enjoying his royal events and getting excited by everything going on around him. "He strode out first when he and his siblings walked from their carriage on the parade ground and when he was in the carriage he got a beam from Kate as he mimed drumming while the band played. "On the balcony, he turned to chat to his parents but his enthusiasm for the Red Arrows was obvious from his impatience signal as he waited for them to arrive, rolling his hands into fists and punching them together. "With this slimmed-down monarchy, there was more of a less formal, family feel to the balcony group. Camilla was chatting to Charles as they walked out and Charlotte had to squeeze out behind her grandfather, followed by an equally squeezing-through Kate. "Sophie and Edward chatted to Charles and Camilla, with Sophie making her husband laugh as she mimed how close two of the planes had flown and Charles chatted frequently to William, with the pair showing signs of a new, more easy-going bonding." This year, another sweet moment was picked up by a lip reader, when Charlotte could be seen chatting to her mum as they made their way to the celebrations. According to professional lip reader Jeremy Freeman, Princess Charlotte said: "Who is it?" asking about a person in the crowd, Kate then replied and Charlotte then appeared to say: "Oh brilliant" before the mother and daughter giggled together. Meanwhile, a fresh update on Kate's health was provided today, as it was announced she was pulling out of Royal Ascot at the last minute. Spectators were hoping to catch a glimpse of Kate as William was named as one of the figures awarding race prizes during the second day of the meet. Kate's name had also been included in the official programme as taking part in today's carriage procession in the second carriage alongside William. But soon after Kensington Palace confirmed she would not be there. It is understood she is trying to find the "right balance" as she fully returns to public-facing engagements. Princess Kate pulls out of Royal Ascot 'at the last minute'
Princess Kate pulls out of Royal Ascot 'at the last minute' The 43-year-old royal was expected to join her husband, Prince William, King Charles and Queen Camilla in the traditional carriage procession at the Berkshire racecourse The Princess of Wales has reportedly said she will not be in attendance for Ascot today (Image: Chris Jackson/PA Wire ) Catherine, Princess of Wales pulled out of attending Royal Ascot "at the last minute" on Wednesday (18.06.25). The 43-year-old royal was expected to join her husband, Prince William, King Charles and Queen Camilla in the traditional carriage procession at the Berkshire racecourse. However, she is believed to have cancelled the engagement as she tries to "find the right balance" amid her gradual return to royal duties, following her battle with cancer. Royal correspondent Chris Ship shared to X: "Prince William will be at @Ascot today as expected but the Princess of Wales has decided, at the last minute, not to attend today. Ascot had previously named her in the second carriage. "It's understood she's decided to find the right balance as she returns to public engagements." Catherine was present at the Trooping the Colour event at Horse Guards Parade in London on Saturday (14.06.25). Article continues below The princess underwent abdominal surgery in January 2024 and later revealed she was undergoing preventative chemotherapy, before confirming in January this year that she was in remission. Catherine - who has Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, seven, with the future king - revealed she was cancer-free as she paid tribute to the staff at the Royal Marsden Hospital in west London, where she received treatment. She wrote on her and William's social media channels: "I wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you to The Royal Marsden for looking after me so well during the past year. "My heartfelt thanks goes to all those who have quietly walked alongside William and me as we have navigated everything. "We couldn't have asked for more. The care and advice we have received throughout my time as a patient has been exceptional. "In my new role as Joint Patron of The Royal Marsden, my hope is, that by supporting groundbreaking research and clinical excellence, as well as promoting patient and family wellbeing, we might save many more lives, and transform the experience of all those impacted by cancer. "It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focussed on recovery. As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal. I am however looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead. There is much to look forward to. Thank you to everyone for your continued support. C (sic)" The princess went public with her cancer diagnosis in March 2024, and praised her husband for his support. She said at the time: "It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be OK. Article continues below "As I have said to them; I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits. "Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance too. As is the love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both."
