This WMass college is offering free course in AI essentials
HOLYOKE — Holyoke Community College and the nonprofit CanCode Communities will partner together to offer a free course on the world of artificial intelligence this summer. 'AI Essentials,' a real-time, instructor-led online training program will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 24 to Sept. 11, from 5:45 to 8:45 p.m. each day. The class is free for eligible Massachusett residents. Over 12 weeks, participants will learn the fundamentals of AI, including prompt engineering, tokenization, embeddings, model structures, retrieval-augmented generation, agency, compute and ethics. The course emphasizes practical applications, leveraging tools such Google AI Studio, n8n, and OpenWebUI to explore how AI models are built, trained, and deployed in the real world. 'Along the way, participants will gain valuable professional development experience, enhancing their technical skills and problem-solving abilities,' said Arvard Lingham, HCC executive director of community education and corporate training. Limited seats are available. Laptops and WiFi hotspots for Internet access will be provided for students who need them. Holyoke Community College announce resignation of Vice President Sharale Mathis
HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – After leading academic and student affairs at Holyoke Community College for four years, Vice President Sharale Mathis has announced her resignation. Dr. Sharale Mathis served as the vice president for academic and student affairs. In a staffing update, HCC President George Timmons announced the resignation of Mathis, citing the acceptance of a position as President of the Capital and Tunxis campuses within the Connecticut State Community College system. Holyoke Community College to offer free course in AI essentials Mathis began her career at HCC in July 2021 following over 15 years in higher education. 'Throughout her time at HCC, Dr. Mathis has exemplified the core values of our institution and played a key role in advancing our strategic goals. Her leadership, vision, and commitment have left a lasting impact on our community,' said President Timmons. A Hartford native, Mathis earned several degrees, a bachelor's degree in biology from Eastern Connecticut State University, a master's degree in biomedical sciences from Quinnipiac University, and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Hartford. ATV rider arrested after crashing into Holyoke police cruiser
HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – A Holyoke man was arrested on Sunday after crashing his ATV into a police cruiser. Holyoke Community College to offer free course in AI essentials The Holyoke Police Department states that on Sunday at approximately 6:15 p.m., an officer was sent to Vernon Street for reports of the illegal and dangerous operation of off-highway vehicles (OHVs). The reports stated that individuals were riding without helmets, and juveniles were involved. Additional officers encountered a moped and three ATVs. An officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on one of the ATV riders, 39-year-old Carlos Alvarez of Holyoke. After initially stopping, Alvarez took off at a high rate of speed. Another officer observed Alvarez on Main Street before he began to head back to the Vernon Street area. The officer parked his cruiser with his emergency lights on near the intersection of Main Street and Vernon Street. Alvarez crashed into the parked cruiser and was thrown from his ATV. He received minor injuries. Alvarez was arrested and the ATV was seized. Funeral services being held for Southwick beekeeper William Crawford
SOUTHWICK, Mass. (WWLP) – Calling hours are being held for a Southwick man who died in a crash while tending bees in Oregon, Ohio. William (Bill) Crawford III was the owner of New England Apiaries on Klaus Anderson Road in Southwick and was known for Billy C's Raw Honey. Last week, Crawford was operating a fork-style tractor in Oregon, Ohio, when he was struck by a vehicle. He was taken to the hospital for serious injuries, where he later died. Owner of Billy C's Raw Honey in Southwick died in Ohio crash According to his obituary from Graham Hilltown Community Funeral Home, 35-year-old Crawford was a graduate of Westfield High School, Holyoke Community College, Westfield State University, and the University of Florida/Jacksonville. In 2007, he started selling honey from a produce farm he worked for in Westfield before forming Pioneer Valley Apiary in what became New England Apiaries. Billy C's Raw Honey can be found on shelves at Big Y, which offered their condolences on Facebook Tuesday, saying, 'We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of our valued vendor partner, former employee and friend, Bill Crawford, owner of New England Apiaries, Home of Billy C's Raw Honey. Bill was a trusted collaborator whose professionalism, creativity and unwavering commitment made a lasting impact on our team and the work we accomplished together. Over the years, our partnership with Bill was marked by mutual respect, shared goals and a spirit of collaboration that we deeply cherished. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Bill's family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time. He will be greatly missed.' Crawford leaves behind his wife, Elaine, and five children. Calling hours are scheduled for Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at New Gospel Church on Union Street in Westfield. The funeral service will be held on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. In addition, a memorial service will be held on June 20 at the Piney Grove Freewill Baptist Church in Georgia.
