US Attorney for NY John Sarcone claims knife-wielding illegal migrant who threatened him ‘was going to kill somebody'

US attorney for New York John Sarcone claimed Friday that a knife-wielding illegal Salvadoran migrant who was charged with threatening to slit his throat was 'going to kill somebody' if he didn't step up to help get him off the streets. Sarcone, the President Trump-appointed US attorney for the Northern District of New York, allegedly encountered a 'crazy' Saul Morales-Garcia — a previously deported illegal migrant from El Salvador — outside the Hilton Hotel in Albany on Tuesday night. Detailing the encounter, Sarcone said Morales-Garcia, 40, aggressively lunged at him multiple times on the street while screaming in a 'foreign language' before he gestured he would slice his throat. The federal prosecutor said he stopped outside the hotel to keep watch when the illegal migrant allegedly started screaming at him. 'I didn't acknowledge him. I kept looking straight ahead. Then out of the corner of my eye, he starts coming towards me. I turned, I look at him. I still don't say anything and then he pulls a knife out. He is screaming at me and then he charges at me,' Sarcone recalled. Sarcone said he started running to the hotel lobby before the alleged perp suddenly stopped and started walking away. 'I feared for my life but I couldn't let this individual harm and potentially kill others.' Morales-Garcia was taken into custody immediately after cops arrived on the scene, prosecutors said. 3 Saul Morales-Garcia, 40, was charged with attempted second-degree murder after allegedly threatening to slit the throat of US Attorney John Sarcone. Albany County Sheriff's Office 'US Attorney John Sarcone's selfless actions likely saved lives,' Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple said. The alleged attempted slasher has been in the US illegally since 2021 after previously being deported. He has a criminal rap sheet in at least three other states outside New York, according to prosecutors. Sarcone said Gov. Kathy Hochul had called him in the wake of the alleged attack after GOP lawmakers started blasting the state's sanctuary city laws. 'She was very sympathetic and concerned and I said 'these sanctuary cities aren't working',' he said of the phone call with Hochul. He was remanded without bail following an initial hearing in Albany City Court.

Tariff talks on track, says Anwar

United front: Anwar delivering opening remarks during the 38th Asia-Pacific Roundtable at the Hilton Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. — AZHAR MAHFOF/The Star KUALA LUMPUR: With less than a month before the unilateral tariffs kick in, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has described Malaysia's latest round of talks with the United States as 'going very well'. The Prime Minister said this was the message conveyed by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. 'This morning, I received a message from the minister that the meetings with the US Secretary of Commerce have been excellent. 'Our emphasis is on the need to secure what is fair for Malaysians and always represent the case for Asean. 'I have also urged my colleagues in Asean to do likewise, present bilateral positions and emphasise the need for Asean to remain as a cohesive force,' he said in his keynote address at the 38th Asia-Pacific Roundtable in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. Malaysia faces a 24% tariff on certain exports to the United States unless both sides can reach an agreement before the 90-day pause ends on July 8. The Prime Minister said the imposition of unilateral tariffs by the United States had posed a significant challenge to Malaysia, as over 60% of its semiconductor exports were meant for the US markets. 'You can imagine the government's concern to secure a fair resolution to this issue,' he said. Anwar said Malaysia remained consistent in its stance that international trade must be governed by transparent rules and predictability, not by unilateralism or coercive economic measures. 'Disruptions in trade and the supply chain will leave detrimental effects on businesses, hampering economic growth. 'Malaysia will continue to engage constructively with the United States, China, India and the European Union in advancing our national and regional interests. 'Let there be no doubt; Malaysia's strategy of active non-alignment is a deliberate and principled framework, designed to maximise strategic flexibility, preserve decision-making autonomy and engage all partners on our own terms,' he added. Anwar said over the past two years, Malaysia had reached out to like minded nations in the Global South to cooperate. 'It is in this spirit that we have revitalised our pursuit of greater inter-regional connectivity and cooperation,' he said. He said the latest move by BRICS to include members and partner countries from the Middle East, South-East Asia, Central Asia, Africa and South America is the essence of bridging regions. BRICS was established in 2009 as a cooperation platform for emerging economies.

Remember this? Thabo Bester's birthday party had Mzansi fooled

Thabo Bester is celebrating his 39th birthday on Friday, the 13th, an unlucky date on the calendar. Like he did last year, the convicted rapist, murderer, and fraudster is being kept in confinement at the Kgosi Mampuru prison. Just a few years ago, Thabo fooled much of Mzansi with his fraudulent business schemes and countless aliases. He even made a 'guest appearance' at a star-studded party, where the crowd sang him happy birthday! He would later break out of prison to go on the run, 'Bonnie and Clyde' style, with his rumoured girlfriend, Dr Nandipha Magudumana. The former couple and seven others are facing a slew of charges in a trial set to begin next month. Thabo Bester's brazen criminal spree has involved him using multiple fake identities and fronting numerous fraudulent businesses. In 2018, Bester – once dubbed the 'Facebook Rapist' – pulled a fast one on many South Africans, including celebrities, in an event that coincidentally took place on his birthday. With the help of an alleged accomplice, Bester registered an event and production company called 21st Century Media. At the time, Bester was imprisoned in Magaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein after being convicted of rape and murder in 2012. Bester – allegedly using the alias Tom Motsepe – told the public that he was based in New York. He also claimed that he was related to SA billionaire Patrice Motsepe. The company held a grand launch party at the Hilton Hotel in Sandton on 13 June 2018 – Bester's real birthday – attended by celebs like Amanda du Pont and Yvonne Chaka Chaka. Leading ladies Nomzamo Mbatha and Thabile Ngwato were MCs of the glamorous black-tie event. In a video clip that has since gone viral, Nomzamo and Thabile sing 'Happy Birthday' to 'Tom,' who is seen laughing via a video link. Take a look… Fast forward to the present, Thabo Bester, Nandipha Magudumana, and seven others are facing charges relating to a wild criminal spree, which includes orchestrating a prison escape, running fraudulent businesses, and violating multiple bodies. Their trial is expected to take place on 21 July at the Bloemfontein High Court. However, ongoing legal proceedings, such as Magudumana's bid to the Constitutional Court to have her arrest and deportation declared unlawful, could possibly delay the trial again. Nandipha Magudumana and Thabo Bester's trial will begin next month. Images via Showmax/ Instagram: @drnandipha In 2022, Thabo Bester faked his death and escaped prison with the help of prison officials and his alleged girlfriend, Nandipha Magudumana. Bester took refuge in Magudumana's Hyde Park home, where he managed to fly under the radar. A few weeks later, he was photographed shopping in a Woolworths store in Sandton. The photo would only make headlines months later when his mysterious disappearance was finally investigated. In 2023, the couple were arrested after they fled the country to Tanzania. Thabo Bester is currently under lock and key at the Kgosi Mampuru prison in Pretoria. Bester is being kept at the C-Max prison – a maximum security division – which will afford him the following… 24-hour surveillance Round-the-clock contact with 'selected high trade correctional officers.' Assurance that he will not be able to harm himself or others Bester has previously been escorted to the prison in a police Nyala – a bullet-proof vehicle of maximum security.
