PlayStation boss Hermen Hulst has praised Astro Bot, calling it one of PlayStation's "most exciting recent successes." Astro Bot was a breath of fresh air for Sony's first-party output which has been relegated to cinematic third-person action games for the longest time, and embodied the spirit of Japan Studio (it getting shut down is probably the biggest blunder of Sony's 2020s, if you ask me). Since then the game has become one of the most beloved platformers of all time, winning Game of the Year at the BAFTAs and The Game Awards. Sony Interactive Entertainment's business group CEO Hermen Hulst gives the game praise during a recent video presentation (via Genki_JPN). During the talk, he calls Astro Bot one of PlayStation's "most exciting recent successes." Hulst adds: "Astro Bot was a smash hit, achieving universal acclaim among players and critics and sweeping industry award shows." When speaking about growing game IP into franchises, Astro Bot is listed as an "emerging IP," hopefully meaning that we should be getting more Astro in the future, (thankfully). Hopefully the success of Astro Bot shows PlayStation the value in having franchises that don't quite fit into that prestige AAA mold or the live service world. After Japan Studio was shuttered in 2021, it meant the studio which were constantly pumping out unique games and ideas were all but gone (the studio was merged into Team Asobi). But, in an era where big Sony series are taking longer to come out (the PS5 generation will probably almost be over by the time the next Naughty Dog game releases), little games like Ape Escape, Gravity Rush, and Patapon would go down a treat. During Sony's game and network services segment fireside chat – it's going to need to work on that name – Sony Interactive Entertainment studio business group CEO Hermen Hulst says PS5 exclusives coming to PC isn't a matter of when, but if. And he really emphasized the if. "We're continuously exploring new ways for players to interact with their franchises," Hulst says during the talk. "It's important to realize that we're really thoughtful about bringing our franchises off console to reach new audiences, and that we're taking a very measured, very deliberate approach in doing that." So if you thought Sony was just seeing dollar signs and throwing Stellar Blade on PC without a plan, Hulst says otherwise. Sony will be seeing dollar signs now though, because Stellar Blade is the best single-player PlayStation launch on Steam. Former Sony exec Shuhei Yoshida previously said porting PlayStation games to PC is "almost like printing money" and was pushing the company to do it before it was popular internally. He cited reaching players in regions where consoles weren't popular as one reason to do it. "Particularly on the single-player side, our tentpole titles, they're such a point of differentiation for the PlayStation console," Hulst continues in the latest fireside chat, citing PlayStation's long legacy as the home of top-tier exclusives. "They're real showcases of the performance, of the quality of the hardware, so we want to ensure that players get the best experience from these titles. We're very thoughtful about how and if we bring these titles to other platforms." A lot of PlayStation's prestige games like Ghost of Tsushima or God of War launch on PC with ultra widescreen support, supporting what Hulst is saying about wanting to be able to give PC players a strong impression of PlayStation's games. One thing gamers are praising so heavily with Stellar Blade is just how well optimized it is. So, don't expect the next big PS5 game to launch on PC just because it's popular on console. PlayStation continues live service obsession with new studio of Bungie veterans

Sony has announced the formation of a new PlayStation studio and it sounds like it will be dedicated to more live service games. Sony may have closed down several studios last year, including Concord developer Firewalk Studios and London Studio, but the company is now starting to plant new seeds. Earlier this year, Dark Outlaw Games, led by Call Of Duty alumni Jason Blundell, was officially announced. Now, PlayStation has unveiled another new studio, only this time formed primarily from ex-Bungie developers. The new studio, named teamLFG, is based in Washington, US and is made up primarily of former Bungie developers. However, it also includes people that have worked on a myriad of different online games, including League Of Legends, Fortnite, Roblox, and Rec Room. As outlined in a PlayStation blog post, teamLFG (which stands for 'Looking For Group') are working on an 'ambitious incubation project' which, based on the studio's name and introduction, sounds like it will be a live service project. 'We are driven by a mission to create games where players can find friendship, community, and belonging,' reads a statement from the team. 'We want our players to feel excited when the log on to discover their teammates already hanging out online. 'We want our players to recognise familiar names and to make myths and memes out of each other. We want our players to love remembering that one time where they pulled off That Play that changed the whole story of the match. As we say on the team – dat's da good stuff.' They added: 'We will make immersive multiplayer worlds propelled by action games that players can learn, play, and master for countless hours. We want to build our games with our communities, inviting players to be a part of our development process through early access playtests.' When it comes to the studio's first project, teamLFG describes it as a 'team-based action game that draws inspiration from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and frog-type games'. And no, we don't know what that means either. 'Players will inhabit a lighthearted, comedic world set in a brand new, mythic, science-fantasy universe,' the statement adds. Weirdly, this isn't the first time 'frog-type games' have been mentioned. This same synopsis was used by Bungie in 2023 when it announced it was hiring for a new incubation project, so this is presumably the exact same game but now under Sony's wing. One of our favorite incubation projects is a team-based action game inspired by several genres in a brand-new, science-fantasy draws inspiration from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and frog-type games, wrapped up in a lighthearted, comedic world. — Bungie (@Bungie) August 18, 2023 While we'd at least be curious to see a battle royale take on Frogger, the announcement of this studio suggests PlayStation is still committed to live service games despite the failure of Concord, something PlayStation Studios CEO Hermen Hulst stated in December last year. More Trending Sony is already hoping Bungie's next online shooter Marathon will hit when it launches later this year, along with heist shooter Fairgame$ from Haven. A Horizon multiplayer spin-off is also rumoured to be in the works, but hasn't been officially announced. Sony has seen success in the live service space with Helldivers 2, but the amount of funds being pumped into these risky multiplayer projects – seemingly at the expense of single-player titles – is starting to show in the 2025 release slate. The only Sony-published single player games coming out this year are Death Stranding 2 and Ghost Of Yōtei, and only the latter is made by an internal studio. There's a chance more could be announced at a future State Of Play, but when so many live service games barely last a year, it's worrying to see Sony continue to devote so much time and resources to the concept, at theexpense of other styles of games. PlayStation announces new studio focused on ‘immersive multiplayer worlds'

Sony just announced a new internal studio called Team LFG, which will be developing 'a team-based action game.' According to Sony Interactive Entertainment studios CEO Hermen Hulst, the studio 'originated at Bungie, but has also rallied developers from across the industry to bring to life an ambitious incubation project that I'm very excited about.' Curiously, no specific developers were announced as part of the studio reveal, so it's not clear who is actually working at Team LFG. As part of the post introducing the studio, it's described as 'a team composed not just of industry veterans who have shipped titles like Destiny, Halo, League of Legend s, Fortnite, Roblox, and Rec Room, but also industry newcomers with fresh creative perspectives and skills.' The existence of Team LFG is part of PlayStation's push into live service games, which has been scaled back from its original ambitious plan, and has suffered a series of major setbacks. Sony originally acquired Destiny developer Bungie in 2022, and the studio went through multiple rounds of layoffs in the following years. When announcing layoffs in 2024, Bungie CEO Pete Parsons said that 'we are working with PlayStation Studios leadership to spin out one of our incubation projects – an action game set in a brand-new science-fantasy universe – to form a new studio within PlayStation Studios to continue its promising development,' which appears to be Team LFG. Bungie is currently working on a multiplayer shooter called Marathon. Sony also released the hero shooter Concord in 2024, and the launch was so disastrous the game was taken offline and, eventually, its developer Firewalk Studios was shuttered. It's not clear how far into development Team LFG's first release is, nor when it might be properly announced. The studio says that 'we will make immersive multiplayer worlds propelled by action games that players can learn, play, and master for countless hours' and that its first game 'draws inspiration from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and frog-type games.' The studio adds that 'players will inhabit a lighthearted, comedic world set in brand-new, mythic, science-fantasy universe.'
