G-Dragon, Le Sserafim, Babymonster push on with overseas concerts amid Covid-19 surge in Asia

According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) on Monday (June 2), countries including China, Thailand and Singapore have recently reported a notable increase in Covid-19 cases. While the situation in Korea remains relatively stable, the agency warned that a summer resurgence is possible due to international travel and regional outbreaks. The NB.1.8.1 variant — now dominant in the affected countries — is known for its strong transmissibility and immune-evasive properties, although its severity and fatality rate remain relatively low. The KDCA is advising high-risk travelers to these countries to get vaccinated before departure. He is slated to perform in Macao for three concerts starting June 7. Asked whether shows in Southeast Asia might be canceled due to COVID-19 concerns, his agency Galaxy Corporation told The Korea Herald, 'We don't know at this point.' G-Dragon recently called off his "G-Dragon Media Exhibition: Ubermensch" in Shanghai, which was originally scheduled to run from May 30 to June 22. While the agency cited 'unforeseen circumstances beyond our control' as the reason for the cancellation, the uptick in COVID-19 cases in China is widely suspected as a contributing factor. Babymonster, also on an Asia tour, wrapped up its 'Hello Monsters' concerts in Singapore and Hong Kong in May and is preparing for its final Southeast Asian stop in Bangkok from June 7-8. YG Entertainment confirmed it has no plans to postpone or cancel the shows. 'We're monitoring the situation closely, but the outbreak is limited to certain regions. Everything is proceeding as planned,' a YG official told The Korea Herald on Wednesday. Le Sserafim is scheduled to perform in Taiwan and Hong Kong in July, followed by concerts in the Philippines, Thailand and Singapore in August as part of its 'Easy Crazy Hot' world tour. Source Music's parent company, Hybe, also confirmed that all shows will proceed as scheduled. JYP Entertainment's acts — Niziu, Nmixx and Xdinary Heroes — are also expected to hold small-scale performances in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, respectively, in the second half of the year, with no changes announced. An industry official noted that unless governments issue specific warnings or event restrictions, K-pop agencies are unlikely to take unilateral action regarding concert postponements. 'There aren't any government guidelines like we saw during the height of the pandemic, so it's hard for companies to take preemptive action on their own,' one agency source said. YG Entertainment unveils ambitious plans
From new Blackpink song to rookie group debut, YG gears up to improve intellectual property K-pop powerhouse YG Entertainment has unveiled its road map for the second half of 2025. On Monday, YG executive producer Yang Hyun-seok released a video interview on the company's official blog, sharing updates on the agency's artists and upcoming rookie debuts. The biggest highlight was the announcement of long-awaited comeback of girl group Blackpink. Yang revealed that new music from the group would be revealed 'soon,' marking the group's first official release in two years and eight months, since second studio album "Born Pink" came out Sept. 16, 2022. Meanwhile, Babymonster, currently on the "Hello Monsters"world tour, will also present a new track. A prerelease single titled 'Hot Sauce' is set for July 1, followed by a mini album on Oct. 1. 'Hot Sauce' marks the group's first release since the first full-length album "Drip" in November 2024. "Hot Sauce" is a late-1980s-style hip-hop track with addictive energy, explained Yang. 'We wanted to gift fans a fun track for the summer. I was curious how teenage Babymonster would interpret a genre from 40 years ago. The result exceeded expectations,' noted Yang. Boy band Treasure is also returning with a new mini album on Sept. 1, followed by a new world tour starting in October. Yang assured the agency's full support of Treasure with at least two new album releases a year. Yang also revealed new artist debut plans. He confirmed the company is preparing two new boy bands and two new girl groups, adding that a boy band might be able to make its official debut in 2026. One of the girl groups is to be a four-member team. To build anticipation, YG will begin releasing practice videos of the new girl group members starting May 28, following a strategy similar to that of Babymonster's predebut exposure. 'As we did before, we want the public to evaluate them exactly as they are,' said Yang. An official debut date for the new groups has not been confirmed. The youngest group currently under YG Entertainment is Babymonster, having debuted in April 2024. Concluding the video, Yang emphasized that YG has undergone major internal restructuring over the past year and is now focusing on accelerating rookie debuts and expanding the company's intellectual property as a top priority.

Concert review: K-pop girl group Babymonster cheered on by growing fan base

If you had caught K-pop septet Babymonster's debut Singapore show in June 2024, you would be amazed by how much their fan base has grown since. The girl group sold out their May 17 concert at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, a larger venue than The Star Vista where they last played to around 5,000 fans. They also performed at the Formula One Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix in September 2024. The demographic of their fan base has also diversified, based on this writer's observations. The about 9,000-strong audience of the 2025 concert included a more even gender mix, and ranged from primary school children to adults in their 30s, compared with their predominantly teenage female audience earlier. The girl group have worked non-stop to win hearts since they were officially formed in 2024, and celebrated their first anniversary on April 1. Now aged 16 to 23, the seven members were assembled from three countries by K-pop agency YG Entertainment. They are Ahyeon, Rami and Rora from South Korea, Asa and Ruka from Japan, as well as Chiquita and Pharita from Thailand. Their first world tour kicked off in Seoul in January, and went to New Jersey and Los Angeles in the United States and five Japanese cities, before arriving in Singapore, their first stop in South-east Asia. Babymonster were quick to proclaim their love for Singapore fans or Monstiez, as they are known. 'It's so good to be back,' Rora said, after they opened the show with two high-energy tracks, Drip and Batter Up. While the agency did not elaborate on her condition, it revealed that the 17-year-old has been undergoing treatment since her debut. But as her condition has not improved, 'medical professionals have advised that she suspend all activities and take absolute rest for the time being', it said in a statement. The statement added: 'Even in the face of this unexpected situation, the six remaining members are more determined than ever to successfully complete their meetings with fans across Asia.' Chiquita, for instance, belted out a rendition of American singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo's Traitor (2021), while Pharita hit all the high notes in What Other People Say (2021), a duet by Australian singer-songwriter Sam Fischer and American singer Demi Lovato. Meanwhile, Asa and Ruka performed Woke Up In Tokyo, their quirky duet from the group's first full-length album Drip released in November 2024. PHOTO: YG ENTERTAINMENT But the real treat for fans came when the group covered Kill This Love (2019) and As If It's Your Last (2017), two dance-pop numbers by the massively popular quartet Blackpink, which are also managed by YG Entertainment. This was Babymonster's first time performing these cover songs on the concert tour, Ahyeon said. Several members, including Ruka, revealed during their trainee period that Blackpink served as their inspiration to pursue a K-pop career. The concert also featured a recap with clips from Last Evaluation, an eight-episode YouTube reality series released in March 2023, which documented Babymonster's journey as K-pop trainees.
