With the mercury set to hit 33C this week, getting some decent shut-eye can become a challenge. Sleep specialist Heather Darwall-Smith, author of How To Be Awake (So You Can Sleep Through The Night), offers tips on kipping in a heatwave . . . BLOCK THE SUN: UK homes are designed to retain heat so you stay toasty in winter. But this can backfire when temperatures rise. To keep cool at night, block heat from bedrooms during the day. Heather says: 'The ideal ambient temperature for sleep is around 18C. 'Shutting blinds — ideally blackout ones — closing windows and drawing curtains by mid-morning can block sun out. At night, when it's cooler, you can open windows at opposite sides of your home to create a breeze tunnel.' BETTER BEDDING: Swap polyester sheets for thinner, breathable bedding such as cotton, linen and bamboo, which let air circulate and wick away moisture when body temperature rises. Heather says: 'Breathable materials improve heat dissipation. The 5 surprising reasons you might not be sleeping - and all are lurking in your home Polyester traps heat and moisture. If allergies allow, swap foam pillows for feathers as they are cooler.' KEEP PJs ON: It might seem contrary, but sleeping in the buff can be detrimental when it's hot. If you perspire heavily, being naked can lead to sweat remaining on the skin, which might actually raise your body temperature even further. 4 Sleeping naked is not the best idea when it's hot Credit: Getty Heather says: 'Sleep naked only if your sheets are breathable. Otherwise, loose, comfortable cotton pyjamas can help wick sweat away.' COOL YOUR CORE: Lowering your body's core temperature before bed can help set you up for a much better sleep. Heather advises: 'Try a lukewarm shower about an hour before bed. 4 Try having a lukewarm shower about an hour before bed Credit: Getty "This supports the body's natural temperature drop as it triggers your body to cool itself more effectively. 'Avoid freezing water or ice baths. "Cooling sprays with menthol from supermarkets can trick your brain into feeling colder. "Apply to pulse points like wrists.' HANDY HACKS: Use quick, cooling techniques in bed to lower your temperature instantly. Heather says: 'Try flipping your pillow when it heats up as temperature differences on the cooler side can cue the body for sleep. 'Or put a damp flannel in the fridge before bed and drape it over your chest or forehead. "Freeze soft toys wrapped in plastic bags for children to cuddle.' GET MOVING: If you have a downstairs room, try sleeping there — or on the floor, where it may be cooler. Heather says: 'Sleeping lower to the ground can help, as heat rises.' ADD ICE: Most UK homes don't have air conditioning, but you can make your own using a basic fan. 4 Put a bowl of ice cubes in front of a fan to make it more effective Credit: Getty Fill a bowl with ice cubes and put it in front of a fan so air blows over the ice. As it melts, chilled air will circulate the room. Or place a large bottle of frozen water covered with a damp towel in the air stream. EastEnders' Heather Peace shares positive update after cancer diagnosis

EastEnders star Heather Peace has shared an update following her cancer diagnosis. Last month, the Eve Unwin star revealed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2024. In a post on Instagram sharing the development, Heather confirmed she was given her health news in October, and had surgery over the Christmas period. In the caption, she said: 'I've been on quite a road for many months now. I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the beginning of October. Since then I've undergone surgery and recovery over the Christmas period and today my chemotherapy journey ended.' 'I woke up this morning and it was like the end of the London Marathon; I'd turned onto The Mall and could see the giant clock & the finish line. To conclude – I've just picked up my medal.' She continued: 'But I'm forever changed. During this time I've narrowed my world. I've had the most precious time with my wife Ellie and our 3 girls; Annie, Jessie & Lola. 'Just trying to appreciate every moment of them. I've stayed still. I've found joy in the simplest of things. Interactions with others have felt honest and real because I've had no capacity for small talk. It has felt like such a personal shift. There have been so many positives.' Now, Heather has opened up about incorporating fitness into her recovery journey, dedicated to keeping her mind and body healthy. 'I think coming through what I've come through, I think [fitness] will be instrumental for the rest of my life. It's now that I need to absolutely focus in on that otherwise I'm just accepting deterioration. I won't accept it at all. I want to be fit and I want to be strong. It's such a good feeling when you're at your top', she said in an episode of The 94% Podcast. 'I needed work as well. I needed that for my mental health. I have a fantastic cast of friends who just absolutely enveloped me and made me feel safe. A day at work just absolutely lifted my spirits and made me laugh and made me feel loved. I felt very vulnerable. I felt I lost a bit of my confidence, but it's coming back now.' Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? Heather has played Eve in the BBC One soap since 2021. The beloved character is in a relationship with Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal), but their journey to finding their happiness was not easy. More Trending As Suki began to accept her sexuality, her controlling ex-husband Nish Panesar (Navin Chowdhry) continued to try and stop her from being with Eve. The characters got married at the start of this year, but the venue was also the location for Nish to attempt his final revenge. His plan never worked, as Nish died after falling from a balcony. Last push for defence as mushroom trial hits nears end

Mushroom cook Erin Patterson's barrister will make a final push to convince jurors his client did not intentionally serve beef Wellingtons laced with death cap mushrooms. Colin Mandy SC is expected to finish his closing address on Thursday after two days of arguing Patterson is innocent of three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. Prosecutors allege Patterson, 50, intentionally poisoned her former in-laws Don and Gail Patterson, Gail's sister Heather and Heather's husband Ian Wilkinson. Don, Gail and Heather all died after consuming the beef Wellington lunch on July 29, 2023 served by Patterson at her home in regional Victoria, while Ian survived. Mr Mandy argued while Patterson told lies before and after the lunch, that did not mean she was guilty of murder and she had no motive to kill any of her guests. He accepted her lie about having cancer was stupid but said she made it up to conceal her plans to undergo weight-loss procedures. Mr Mandy denied the cancer lie was a ruse to bring the guests into her home, as she told the lie at the end of the meal once the beef Wellingtons had been eaten. The barrister told the jury his client also ate the poisoned meal but her younger age, heavier weight and decision to throw up afterwards meant her symptoms were less severe. Mr Mandy pointed to scientific research from Germany which showed people could respond differently when consuming death cap mushrooms. The defence barrister criticised prosecution claims Patterson saw posts about death cap locations in the Gippsland area and then went to those places to forage for the mushrooms. Mr Mandy told the jury there was no evidence Patterson saw the iNaturalist posts from April and May 2023 and cell tower data only suggested she might have been near Outtrim and Loch on the relevant days. Once Mr Mandy finishes his closing address, Justice Christopher Beale will give his final directions to the jury. The judge has indicated he will not begin his instructions until Monday, with the jury to start deliberating on Tuesday afternoon at the earliest.
