Upcoming weather has Massachusetts under an Extreme Heat Warning

Due to the upcoming heat wave Massachusetts is set to experience, the state has been issued an 'Extreme Heat Warning.' The National Weather Service says that it's slated to go into effect for eastern, northeastern, southeastern, and western Massachusetts starting on Sunday at 11 AM until Tuesday at 8 PM. Our weather team expects temperatures to go up into the high 90s, with Tuesday potentially being a record-breaking day in terms of heat. Tuesday is the day to watch. Temperatures are slated to reach 100 degrees, and the heat index may climb, making it feel like 110! Our meteorologists say, 'Records are likely to fall across the region, and outdoor activity should be limited to the early morning or evening hours.' 'With this heat emergency coming as we kick off the summer season, we ask our community members to please take care and prepare accordingly for the extreme heat,' said Mayor Michelle Wu. 'City staff are working to ensure that all residents can have a safe and enjoyable summer. Be sure to stay hydrated, take breaks from working outside, and regularly check in on neighbors, friends, and family.' Mayor Wu and city staff members have also issued the following safety tips to ensure you beat the heat: Children and pets should never be left alone in vehicles, even for short periods of time. Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids regardless of activity level. Avoid alcoholic beverages and liquids high in sugar or caffeine. Keep cool with frequent cool showers, shade, and air conditioning or fans. More tips for cooling down at home can be found here. If you can't avoid being outside, it's critical to take breaks in the shade, drink water constantly — even if you're not thirsty — and watch for warning signs like dizziness, nausea, or confusion. Know the signs of heat exhaustion. Heavy sweating, cool and clammy skin, dizziness, nausea, and muscle aches could all be signs of heat exhaustion. If symptoms persist, call 9-1-1 immediately. Do not delay care. Heat is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the U.S. and can exacerbate underlying illnesses. Adults and children should use sunscreen containing an SPF-30 or higher and wear protective, loose-fitting clothing including long sleeve shirts and hats. If you have a child in your home, use child window guards in addition to screens on any open window on the second story or above. Falls are the leading cause of injury for children under the age of six. Secure all window air conditioner units according to the manufacturer's specifications. If you are heading to a beach, lake, or pool to beat the heat, swim where lifeguards are present. Always watch children near the water and make sure they're wearing a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket. Please call or check on neighbors, especially older adults and people with disabilities. Please keep pets indoors, hydrated, and cool as asphalt and ground conditions are significantly hotter and unsafe during heat. Some cities, like Worcester, have announced cooling centers at the following locations: Monday, June 23 Worcester Public Library (Main Branch) – 3 Salem Square | 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Worcester Senior Center – 128 Providence St. | 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 24 Worcester Public Library (Main Branch) – 3 Salem Square | 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Worcester Senior Center – 128 Providence St. | 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Worcester 311 Customer Service Center – 799 Main St. | 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. This is a developing story. 'Compact' patio heater that warms outdoor areas ‘in seconds' falls to £40

Gtech's patio heater is said to provide 'instant heat' and has been a popular buy as more of us look to spend our evenings outdoors It's finally spring. The sun has seemingly remembered it's allowed to make an appearance in the UK and the garden lovers among us are keen to spend as much time outside as possible before it gets all dark and dreary again. While enjoying the daylight with a cuppa or a glass of wine is largely a pleasant experience at this time of year, as the hours tick by there's a common complaint that tends to arise: 'It's getting a bit chilly, shall we head inside?' But there are products out there that help keep people warm while the temperature dips. While patio heaters can typically be a bit pricey, shoppers have been singing the praises of a popular product from Gtech that doesn't cost the world. The HeatWave Patio Heater is currently on offer, taking the price down from £149.99 to £39.99. It's averaged a very solid rating of 4.6 stars out of 5 from almost 500 reviews left to date. According to the brand, the device is capable of heating up to six metres 'in seconds', meaning it should provide sufficient warmth for most standard patio seating areas. The heater runs with infrared technology that's said to give you the sensation of warmth as if felt from the sun, while it gives off a glow to add to the atmosphere as the sun sets. It's designed to be wall-mounted or on a solid structure, while the product is also compact and doesn't need any bulky gas bottles like some traditional patio heaters. If you're worried about the electricity cost, Gtech promises it's 'low', explaining: 'They use a lower wattage than traditional patio heaters, and are much more efficient as less heat is lost. Silently and discreetly, they convert almost 100% of the electricity they use into usable heat.' If you're looking for a product that packs a punch, Dunelm stocks the Amber Outdoor Pedestal Heater with Remote Control. Priced at £399 it isn't cheap but can cover 25m². In the same price range as the Gtech product, Amazon stocks the Harrier Standing Outdoor Patio Heater that has the advantage of having a stand. Priced at £39.99, it's the retail giant's best seller in the patio heaters category. Speaking of Gtech's offering, one buyer said: 'Instant heat, stylish, lightweight and compact. Bought to heat my patio area on cooler nights, and it did not disappoint. Also got it at a discounted price, so I have absolutely no complaints whatsoever.' Another continued: 'Thought I would try it before fitting it to it designated place. Wow it didn't disappoint and it looks good and gives off a really good heat.' A third continued: 'Really happy with this garden heater. So easy to use and install. Wasn't expecting it to produce the amount of heat for the size of the product. The heat is instant and you can feel it from quite a few feet away. The price was reduced to £39. 99 with free p+p so got myself a bargain.' However, despite all the positive feedback, there were a couple of drawbacks flagged. One shopper pointed out: 'Patio heater gives off a decent amount of heat, the only problem, which is quite a big problem, is the length of the power cord, giving limited mounting options.' Another mentioned they had some trouble with the fixing bracket.
