ABVP protest march in Thiruvananthapuram turns violent
A protest march taken out by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) to the Thampanoor Police on Sunday (June 22, 2025) afternoon turned violent with the police deploying water cannon to disperse the protesters. The march was taken out in protest against an alleged assault on ABVP State secretary E.U. Eswaraprasad by Students Federation of India (SFI) activists on Saturday night. The ABVP accused the Thampanoor police of shielding the accused.
The police had put up barricades a little away from the station. When the protesters tried to scale the barricades, the police deployed water cannon. The ABVP members destroyed the flags of the CITU put up at Thampanoor as part of the Headload Workers' State conference. The protesters were later arrested and removed.
The State has been witnessing protests by the Bharatiya Janata Party, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and associated organisations against General Education Minister V. Sivankutty over his comments related to the Raj Bhavan's use of the image of a Bharat Mata holding a saffron flag in official events. Mr. Sivankutty said on Sunday that the protests by the BJP's youth and student groups were carried out on instructions of the Raj Bhavan.
The ABVP announced a statewide education bandh on Monday over the alleged attack on its state secretary.
