Former governor Bill Haslam appointed to University of Tennessee Board of Trustees

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton has tapped Bill Haslam, the former governor of Tennessee and Knoxville mayor, to serve on the University of Tennessee Board of Trustees. The board serves as the governing body of the University of Tennessee system, overseeing operations across the system's five campuses. The governor previously appointed 10 of the 12 board members. The new law requires the speaker of each chamber of the general assembly to appoint two board members each. Haslam was elected Mayor of Knoxville in 2003, winning re-election in 2007 and serving until 2011. He went on to succeed Phil Bredesen as the 49th Governor of Tennessee. Browns Controversial Reason for Drafting 2 QBs Revealed

For weeks leading up to the 2025 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns were expected to select Colorado quarterback and reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, Shedeur Sanders, early in the selection show. After a historic slide, Sanders was finally selected, but in the fifth round, and after Cleveland had grabbed Oregon signal caller Dillon Gabriel two rounds earlier. What gives? We know the Browns have had issues at quarterback ... forever. But this smells of a power move between owner Jimmy Haslam and general manager Andrew Berry. At least that's how it appears on the outside. But Browns insider, Mary Kay Cabot, shot that theory down quickly. "Haslam wouldn't force Berry to make a decision like that. Berry has final say over roster decisions, and Haslam lets him do his job," Cabot wrote. "Berry collaborates with others, including (coach Kevin) Stefanski, on such decisions, but he is driving the roster bus and Haslam doesn't meddle. "Back in 2014, when the inexperienced Ray Farmer was GM, Haslam influenced the pick of Johnny Manziel. But Berry is an experienced GM, and Haslam isn't mandating moves." If the Browns had Sanders on their draft board as a fourth- or fifth-rounder, it only makes sense that if he was available at that time, that they would make the pick. So what now? As the team continues the 2025 offseason with Deshaun Watson shelved potentially for all of next season with two Achilles injuries in three months, Berry and the Browns have set themselves up nicely with two rookies in Sanders and Gabriel, as well as Kenny Pickett and veteran Joe Flacco to choose from. ... And a new concept of Haslem as a non-meddling owner. Irwin second as Haslam claims first win since 2018

Glenn Irwin finished second as Leon Haslam claimed his first British Superbike race win since 2018 in Monday's sprint at Oulton Park. The Englishman held off Irwin and Bradley Ray, who won Sunday's opener, to prevail in the 12-lap contest for Moto Rapido Racing. "It's so good. yesterday I was a little bit nervous to be honest with you, Wilf [team owner Steve Moore] was saying bring it home, take it easy and by the time I'd got into second yesterday, Brad was long gone" said 2018 BSB champion Haslam. "Today I thought I needed to go hard from the start and I managed to make an early move, catch him down, and I didn't expect to do that lap time." Ray led Storm Stacey and Haslam early in the race as Irwin dropped to fourth. Haslam made a move at the start of lap five to lead and held on from there, while Northern Irishman Irwin recovered to pip Ray to second for Hager PBM Ducati. Haslam, 41, added: "To be honest, the last five laps were the longest laps ever, there were a couple of false neutrals and a big moment on the last lap. I was struggling to get back into gears and I went down one too many and it popped in. "It was a rookie mistake really on the last lap and I should have kept it smooth. A big thanks to Moto Rapido, all the sponsors involved. It's been a hard few years and it's a nice feeling to get back on the top step." Race three at Oulton Park takes place at 16:30 BST on Monday.
