I watch Netflix for a living — here are the 7 new shows and movies I'd stream this week

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The list of new Netflix shows and movies this week has a major series premiere on it. And it's not the only thing on the streaming service this week that you'll want to keep an eye on. The series premiere in question? "The Waterfront," which is a new drama series set on the North Carolina coast. It has the right blend of comedy, melodrama and crime to be the next hit show on Netflix, so make sure to check it out when it arrives on June 19. Of course, some people love Netflix for its reality shows, and this week, a big name returns to the streaming service. "America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders" season 2 premieres on Wednesday, and it will bring plenty of unscripted drama and high stakes as the show searches for the next batch of Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. For more to watch, read on for my top picks, a full list of everything new on Netflix this week and the scoop on what's leaving Netflix this week. If you need more, check out our guide to everything new to Netflix in June or this new dystopian drama miniseries that arrived last week. "The Waterfront" stars Jake Weary as Cane Buckley. Scion of the Buckley fishing empire, things aren't going well for him and his family behind the scenes. Cane's parents, Harlan (Holt McCallany) and Mae (Maria Bello), are trying to fix things, but at the show's start, they're in danger of losing everything. That causes Harlan to make a mistake he can't come back from, and to turn to drug smuggling to make ends meet. That puts the Buckleys in bed with an up-and-coming drug lord, Grady (Topher Grace) and based on the trailer, that's something that surely won't end well. Watch on Netflix starting June 19 Netflix may have lots of original scripted shows and movies, but it also offers a ton of reality shows and documentaries. "America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders" combines both of those genres for a docuseries about rookie cheerleaders trying to make it onto the Dallas Cowboys cheer squad. Making the squad is difficult, and even if you make it, the demands are high and the wages are low. In season 2, just 23 out of 36 veteran Cowboys cheerleaders are returning, giving this season the largest rookie class of the past five years. Watch on Netflix starting June 18 The "Trainwreck" docuseries is an anthology series of documentaries, each investigating compelling events that often ended in disaster. In "Mayor of Mayhem," the compelling event in question is the 2010 mayoral campaign of Rob Ford, who ran for and shockingly won the Toronto election that year. But it's not just the campaign this documentary film will follow. It will also cover the subsequent scandals that plagued Ford's administration, including the accusations of substance abuse that were levied against the mayor during his time in office. Watch on Netflix starting June 17 Justin Willman first made his name as a magician-comedian back in 2018 with his Netflix original show "Magic for Humans." Now, he's back on the streaming service for his first-ever Netflix comedy special. But this won't be your typical comedy special. Yes, there will be jokes and bits about AI, screen time, and being a nerd in high school. However, there will also be magic tricks and illusions, including a bit where he smashes a woman's phone ... without mentioning he was going to do it first. Does that woman's phone survive this hour-long comedy special? You'll have to watch "Justin Willman: Magic Lover" to find out. Watch on Netflix starting June 17 "Somebody Feed Phil" is now one of Netflix's longest-running shows. It features "Everybody Loves Raymond" creator Philip Rosenthal traveling the world to discover new locations and new cuisine. Back for season 8, it doesn't look like Phil's changing up the formula, but he is going to new locations. Guatemala, Amsterdam, Tbilisi, Sydney, Adelaide, Boston, Las Vegas and San Sebastian all feature in season 8. He's also bringing some guests with him, including "Everybody Loves Raymond" stars Brad Garrett and Ray Romano and singer Donny Osmond. If you love a food travel show, "Somebody Feed Phil" season 8 is one to check out. Watch on Netflix starting June 18 Kerry Washington may have been in the news earlier this year for "Shadow Force," but her most famous show or movie to date is still probably "Scandal." This Shonda Rhimes political thriller was a massive hit on ABC, and starred Washington as crisis manager Olivia Pope. At the show's start, she's in charge of an elite crisis management firm, but she used to work for the president of the United States, Fitzgerald Grant III (Tony Goldwyn). That's a relationship that gets her into trouble more than once as the show goes on, and trust me, this show has no shortage of drama. You can stream the entire series starting this week, and it might just become your next binge-watch. Watch on Netflix starting June 17 "The Intern" stars Robert De Niro as 70-year-old retired widower Ben Whittaker. He has grown bored with retirement and decides to rejoin the rat race as a senior intern at About The Fit, a fast-fashion startup in Brooklyn. As a former executive, he's overqualified and quickly impresses people. That gets him paired with the company's CEO, Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway). Initially, she's wondering why she even needs a senior intern, but as he begins to improve her work life, he soon becomes indispensable to her. As a Nancy Meyers movie with two incredible lead actors, the bar is set pretty high with "The Intern." Whether or not it clears that bar is subject to debate, but the floor is also really high with so much talent involved in this comedy drama, so I'll be shocked if you don't at least enjoy it. Watch on Netflix starting June 22 JUNE 16 "The Last Witch Hunter" JUNE 17 "Justin Willman: Magic Lover" (Netflix comedy special) Sleight-of-hand sorcery. Mischievous mind games. Mind-blowing illusions. Justin Willman conjures up laughs in a special where comedy and magic collide. "Kaulitz & Kaulitz" season 2 (DE) (Netflix series) The show must go on! Tom and Bill Kaulitz are back to share their exciting lives, even as dark clouds gather in paradise. "Trainwreck: Mayor of Mayhem" (GB) (Netflix documentary) Rob Ford scandalized Canadian politics as the brash yet beloved mayor of Toronto — until an infamous video of him smoking crack sparked his downfall. "Scandal" seasons 1-7 JUNE 18 "America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders" season 2 (Netflix series) A new batch of hopefuls face fierce competition, high expectations and even higher kicks as they vie for a spot with the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. "Rosario Tijeras (Mexico)" season 4 (MX) (Netflix series) Years after Rosario's sacrifice, her legend haunts her daughter, Ruby. As the teen's life takes a dangerous turn, secrets from her past begin to unravel. "Somebody Feed Phil" season 8 (Netflix series) Fresh flavors and new friends await as globetrotting foodie Phil Rosenthal expands his culinary horizons to Amsterdam, Boston, Basque Country and more. "Yolanthe" (NL) (Netflix series) This reality series follows Yolanthe Cabau in her glamorous new life in Los Angeles as she faces unexpected challenges and ghosts from her past. JUNE 19 "The Waterfront" (Netflix series) A prominent North Carolina fishing family wades into treacherous waters to keep their crumbling business empire afloat. "KPop Demon Hunters" (Netflix family) When K-pop superstars Rumi, Mira and Zoey aren't selling out stadiums, they're using their secret powers to protect their fans from supernatural threats. "Olympo" (ES) (Netflix series) The Pyrenean High Performance Center: home to Spain's most promising athletes. The question is, how far will they go to reach the top — and stay there? "Semi-Soeter" (ZA) (Netflix film) Power couple Jaci and JP find themselves in a bumpy predicament when a new work pitch for a baby brand forces them to play the perfect pretend parents. JUNE 22 "The Intern" Leaving 6/16/25 "The Equalizer" seasons 1-3"Won't You Be My Neighbor?" Leaving 6/17/25 "Carol" Leaving 6/19/25 "Migration" Leaving 6/21/25 "American Sniper" Leaving 6/22/25 "Brain on Fire" I just saw one of my favorite movies in theaters for its 40th anniversary — but you can stream it for free right now Tom Hardy's 'MobLand' just wrapped up with a stunning finale — and I can't wait for a season 2 'Hacks' shocking season 4 finale has me hopeful season 5 could be the show's best yet — here's why

Netflix's The Waterfront: Will the show get a season 2?

Netflix has just released their latest drama series The Waterfront, and, after binging all eight episodes, fans are already demanding the show returns for another season. So what's the verdict? If you haven't seen the show yet (don't worry it's only been out for a day), it's about the Buckley family, who run a fishing and restaurant business in their small North Carolina town. As they run into business trouble, they take drastic (and illegal) action to keep themselves afloat, and as the series goes on they find themselves in a lot of drama. After eight episodes the series ends with a major suggestion the show could be coming back for another series. So is it? Here's what we know about The Waterfront season two. Ok so as of right now the show has not been officially renewed for another season. However, there are several indicators The Waterfront will return. While discussing the season finale with Tudum, series creator Kevin Williamson, said this season was all about the relationship between Cane and his father Harlan, with the suggestion being that a future season would be more centred on Belle. "This season was about Harlan and Cane — how they reconciled their differences and how they're going to move forward. Now Belle is a little more front and centre. She's not living in the shadows.' Sounds like he's already started planning another season to us. And Jake Weary who plays Cane in the series, has shared his thoughts on what a potential next season could look like. When asked by TV Insider what he hopes would happen in season two he said: "The end of the first season feels like it's still moving because you don't want it to stop, right? So that's a good sign, I think, for season two. I would like to see it just keep moving. I would like to see the family come together to stave off some universal villain." If season two were to get renewed we'd hope to see the majority of the cast return including: One person who won't be making a comeback is Topher Grace, whose character Grady was shot dead in the finale by Cane. Season one ended with a big surprise. Another crime family the Parkers, who series creator Kevin Williamson describes as "a school of sharks" reach out to Belle and try to begin working with her, rather than Harlan and Cane. As this happens only in the last episode we would expect it to carry on as a big plot of the second season. We'd also want to see if Cane and Jenna's relationship is actually finished business or if there's more to their affair as another season picks up. We'd also want to see some happiness for Bree after everything she's gone through already. The Waterfront is available on Netflix now

The Waterfront Finale: Belle seizes control of Buckley Empire; Harlan left in the dark, Bree Survives, Romance tested

The Buckley family saw significant developments as The Waterfront season 1 came to a close, laying the groundwork for a likely season 2 with compelling plotlines. As the Buckleys, a family with problems in the made-up town of Havenport, get caught up in criminal activity and family secrets, the series follows them. The conclusion exposed betrayal, a risky partnership, and an unexpected change in leadership. After making a deal, Belle takes over as the new boss. In order to protect the Buckleys' land from Wes, Belle Buckley struck a secret deal with the Parkers, a significant cartel family. In an attempt to seize the Buckleys' property, Wes had purchased their bank debt. Belle had to take over the Buckley family business in exchange for convincing the Parkers to take care of Wes. Belle was introduced as the "new boss" in the last scene, standing over a battered Wes. Given that Belle kept the arrangement a secret from her husband, Harlan, the choice could cause friction. This establishes the conflict in season two of The Waterfront. When Cane and Harlan needed assistance handling an unpredictable new supplier named Grady, they turned to the Parkers. Bree had been kidnapped by Grady, but she was rescued by Cane and Harlan. Although neither Cane nor Harlan is aware of Belle's private arrangement with the cartel, the Parkers are once again doing business with the Buckleys. In conclusion, this is what happened with Bree and Peyton. Bree was thrown into the ocean after being shot in the leg by Grady, but Diller saved her life by throwing her a rescue pack. After being saved, she was brought to the hospital. Bree was able to process her trauma, which included witnessing her grandfather Beau Buckley's murder as a child, thanks to her near-death experience. When Peyton confronted Jenna, Cane and Jenna ended their affair. Even though their marriage is far from ideal, Peyton made the decision to forgive Cane and keep it going. Although he appeared uncertain about remaining in Havenport, Shawn, Harlan's son, assisted in saving Bree. Even though he demonstrated his loyalty, it's obvious that he doesn't fit in with the Buckleys' criminal lifestyle. It's unclear what he will do next.

The Waterfront Ending Explained: Who's in Charge of Buckley Family Empire, What Happens to Belle and Harlan's Romance?

The Waterfront season 1 wrapped up with significant developments for the Buckley family, setting up intense storylines for a likely season 2. The Netflix series follows the Buckleys, a troubled family in the fictional town of Havenport, as they become entangled in crime and family secrets. The finale revealed betrayals, a dangerous alliance, and a surprising leadership twist. Belle becomes the new boss after striking a deal Belle Buckley made a secret deal with the Parkers, a powerful cartel family, to save the Buckleys' land from Wes. Wes had bought the Buckleys' bank debt, hoping to take over their property. Belle convinced the Parkers to handle Wes, but in return, she had to take control of the Buckley family business. The final scene showed Belle standing over a beaten Wes, introduced as the 'new boss.' The decision may create tension, as Belle never told her husband, Harlan, about the deal. This sets the stage for conflict in The Waterfront season 2. Cane and Harlan turned to the Parkers for help dealing with Grady, a volatile new supplier. Grady had kidnapped Bree, but Cane and Harlan managed to save her. 'It had to be done,' Harlan told Cane after Grady was killed. It marked Cane's first kill, and he struggled with it, but knew it was necessary to save Bree. Meanwhile, the Parkers are back in business with the Buckleys, though neither Cane nor Harlan knows about Belle's personal agreement with the cartel. Here's what happened to Bree and Peyton in the finale Grady shot Bree in the leg and threw her into the ocean, but Diller helped her survive by tossing her a rescue pack. She was rescued and taken to the hospital. Bree's near-death experience helped her process her trauma, including the murder of her grandfather, Beau Buckley, which she witnessed as a child. Cane and Jenna ended their affair after Peyton confronted Jenna. Peyton decided to forgive Cane and continue their marriage, even though it's far from perfect. Shawn, Harlan's son, helped save Bree but seemed unsure about staying in Havenport. While he proved his loyalty, he's clearly uncomfortable with the Buckleys' criminal world. His next move remains uncertain.

Where was ‘The Waterfront' filmed? Behind the scenes on Netflix's new crime drama

Netflix's The Waterfront mixes Ozark with Succession – and it all unfolds by the water in North Carolina. The show is the handiwork of Scream creator Kevin Williamson and boasts of an intriguing cast, including chiselled character actor Holt McCallany, Mario Bello, and actor-singer Melissa Benoist. The dynastic drama, which should also appeal to fans of Netflix's Florida Keys thriller Bloodline (2015-2017), is set in the coastal town of Havenport, North Carolina. Here's where you can find its seaside setting in real life. What happens in The Waterfront? After suffering not just one, but two heart attacks, Harlan Buckley (Black Bag 's Holt McCallany) is struggling to keep his family afloat as the controlling destiny in the fictional coastal town of Havenport, North Carolina. For decades, the Buckley family have controlled the local fishing industry and the town's picturesque restaurant scene. Following Harlan's brushes with death, it's up to his long-suffering wife Belle (A History of Violence 's Maria Bello) and their son Cane (Jake Weary) to make sure that the Buckley family maintains its dominance and reputation. Unfortunately for Harlan, that approach soon gets the family into even more trouble. Despite his ill-health, Harlan is forced to take back control – all while trying to keep an eye on his daughter Bree (Melissa Benoist), who lost custody of her son after her issues with addiction. With stunning locations and idyllic views, as well as murder, sex, romance, betrayal, and plenty of melodrama, The Waterfront is the sort of Netflix show you begin on Friday, only to have somehow watched it all by Saturday afternoon. Here's everything you need to know about its locations, cast, and how to watch it. Where was The Waterfront filmed? There is some bad news for fans of The Waterfront who are eager to visit the city of Havenport – it doesn't actually exist. Instead, The Waterfront was shot in the cities of Wilmington and Southport, North Carolina. Wilmington, North Carolina According to Port City Daily, when production took place in Wilmington, the cast and crew shot at the Suites On Market motel, the Cotton Exchange shopping complex by the Riverfront, on North Front Street in the Historic district, round the corner at the private Cape Fear Club, and at the Little Drum Landing event venue on Ann Street. Southport, North Carolina Meanwhile over in Southport, the city's officials took to Instagram to reveal that filming occurred in various restaurants, including Fishy Fishy Cafe, Morningstar Marina, and Potter's Seafood, each of which are bound to explode in popularity once The Waterfront hits Netflix. Kevin Williamson, The Waterfront's creator and showrunner who also wrote Scream, The Faculty, Dawson's Creek, and The Vampire Diaries, has made a habit out of shooting in his home state. Williamson was born in New Bern, North Carolina, and attended East Carolina University in nearby Greenville. I Know What You Did Last Summer, which Williamson wrote, was also shot in Southport back in 1996, while his beloved teen drama Dawson's Creek filmed in and around Wilmington for its six seasons between 1998 and 2003. Williamson has also teased that The Waterfront needed to be both set in and shot in North Carolina, because it was inspired by true events. While he's yet to provide concrete details on who influenced the Buckley family, his father Wade Williamson worked as a fisherman in North Carolina. Williamson even admitted to the Netflix website that his dad was a drug runner during this time. 'I come from a long line of fishermen,' explains Williamson. 'The fishing industry sort of upturned in the '80s – it all started to go away, and my dad couldn't feed his family. So someone came along and said, 'Hey, if you do this one thing, you can make all this money.' And it was hard to say no to… my dad – a very, very good man – got tempted to do some things that weren't so legal and got in some trouble. [But] it put food on the table, helped me go to college.' Who is in The Waterfront? The Waterfront looks destined to attract a cavalcade of viewers thanks to its all-star cast, too. In recent years, Holt McCallany has become one of most underrated actors in America, thanks to his work in Mindhunter and The Iron Claw. The leading role of Harlan gives McCallany plenty to dig into and he clearly relishes playing a despicable but still captivating patriarch. Maria Bello is the perfect foil for McCallany as his wife Mae. Audiences will recognise her from the likes of A History Of Violence, Grown Ups, Prisoners, and Beef, and she always makes everything she appears in better merely with her presence. Mae's decision to put her family first leads her to make some very bad decisions, but Bello ensures that you always still relate to her efforts. The other most recognisable performer in The Waterfront is Melissa Benoit, who shot to fame with the titular role in Supergirl, which ran for six seasons. She also appeared in the Oscar winning Whiplash, the Paramount miniseries Waco, and the action thriller Patriots Day. But the character Bree is much more hot-tempered and cunning than we've seen her before. That '70s Show star Topher Grace plays against type as drug smuggler Grady. While he comes from a rich family of lawyers and doctors, Grady made some poor decisions in the tech world that landed him in jail. After being released from prison, he started a poppy farm which ultimately leads to him butting heads with the Buckley family. The Waterfront's cast is rounded out by Jake Weary as Harlan's only son Cane, Humberly González as Cane's high school sweetheart Jenna, who has just returned to town and causes Cane to reconsider his relationship with his devoted wife Peyton, played by Danielle Campbell. There's also Gerardo Celasco as DEA Agent Marcus Sanchez, who keeps a watchful eye on the criminal exploits of the Buckley family. How can I watch The Waterfront and when does it come out? All eight episodes of The Waterfront will be available to watch on Netflix on June 19. Is there a trailer for The Waterfront? Yes, there is – in fact, you can watch it below. The best TV and streaming shows of 2025 (so far).
